Ice Climbers will return.
The Polar Bear in Smash Run may only suggest their return, but they were already in Melee and Brawl, so it would be weird to not see them return but add the Polar Bear in anyway. Sakurai did state problems with tag-team characters on the 3DS version, but I don't think he actually mentioned the Ice Climbers directly, although "tag-team" obviously means them, but it could also mean Rosalina & Luma.

Although, I don't remember seeing the original page, but here's this:
http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/06/13/smash-bros-wii-u-3ds-might-not-release-at-the-same-time

"3DS facing some challenges in terms of how to accommodate characters that incorporate more than one fighter"

This could also refer to Rosalina & Luma, and maybe even Pikmin & Olimar, although I'm not sure if you would call the Pikmin as exact fighters, but they do of course fight when thrown by Olimar. Because of this, it most-likely means the problem has been resolved by now, meaning the Ice Climbers should be fine and if they do return with changes, maybe only slight changes.

Hello everyone. Here's my take on the Ice Climbers. They've been here since Melee, and I don't think they'll be getting the boot this time around. I really like this happy little duo, and I'll be glad when they're confirmed for Smash Bros. 4. I do however think that when and if you lose Nana during a fight, Popo needs more power so you don't just want to lose a stock. Seriously, every time Nana dies, I just go ahead and lose a stock to get her back. Without her, Popo isn't much of a threat.

Well, I'm sure they'll stay the same like in Melee and Brawl. It would also be cool (pun somewhat intended) if they go some new moves. What do ya think they should be?

New moves would be nice. I hardly ever used their specials, other than the recovery. As for ideas for new moves, I don't really have any. The Ice Climbers don't have much to build on, considering they only had 1 game other than Smash. I think maybe some more effects for their specials might make them a bit more interesting to use, but other than that I can't really think of much.

Well, one thing I have in mind is giving their Down Special (Blizzard) a longer range. Other than that, I can't think of much else.

Something tells me that they may reveal some more veterans (along with a newcomer) at some point this month. Only time will tell when that'll be.

What Alternate Costumes do you think could work for the Ice Climbers?
A hood down is one I've seen suggested quite a few times on here and I feel it'd be fitting. I personally think outfits based on the Game & Watch Climber game would be pretty cool.

Hoodless Ice Climbers would be what I want.

Ice Climbers being confirmed already is what I'd want most (we know their sure to be in, but to see them revealed already would be nice) but hoodless Ice Climbers would be a nice bonus.

Along with my original Climber costume based idea, I think rock climber outfits would also be pretty cool.

There is a big chance they will get in.

Would you mind displaying a picture of the Rock Climber Alternate Costume? I would like to take a look at it.

Well, best case scenario is that they, along with most other Brawl veterans, are confirmed on August 12th, IF CoroCoro is going to deliver the ACTUAL full roster this time.

Hoodless Ice Climbers would be great. I've always wondered what their hair looks like, even though it's only partially seen with their hoods on.

Another great idea for an alternate costume would be their 8-bit NES appearance. Since it worked for Mr. Game & Watch, why not Ice Climbers?

In my opinion, the Ice Climbers are too good to throw away in Smash Bros. This is their new home, given that they've never appeared in another game since the NES days. The Polar Bear appearing in Smash Run might be Sakurai's little tease by saying that content from Ice Climbers will return, but we haven't seen Nana and Popo in a while... Maybe they're taking a little longer to develop this time around, but I really don't think they can be cut. :rosalina: Rosalina might provide an alternative to them, but I think the Ice Climbers are here to stay.

P.S: The Hoodless Climbers would be a neat alternate costume choice! It'd certainly help to finally figure out who's who when you're using the alternate colour schemes! :)

You said it, dude. Another reason I don't see them leaving is because Sakurai loves them. They're just too adorable to abandon. If they were trapped in a burning building feeling scared, I would risk my skin to save them, even if it means suffering third-degree burns. That would make me a hero.

Ya. I think they've found a comfortable home in Smash Bros. Even when Melee was announced, they were still pretty old by then. But they returned for Brawl, and it looks like they'll return again. They're just that happy duo that everyone knows from Smash Bros. I think they're going to stay this time, and in the next Smash Bros. game, if there ever is another. They'll stay to represent 8-bit/retro area. We've only got 3 others (Mr. G&W, R.O.B., Pac-man) and 4 is a good number to represent that point in time.

I completely agree with everything ya said here. They deserve to stay for the rest of the Smash Bros series.

Like I said earlier, let's hope they're announced along with CoroCoro, if that's real. I also read an article stating Nintendo has confirmed they will be unveiling every playable fighter later this month. Hopefully this is true, and we'll get the ICies back. But I'm not sure if it's confirmed or debunked, or even real. You can check that out under the Wii U General Discussion Thread, then hit "Super Smash Bros for Wii U/3DS Information Thread".

I'm pretty sure they will only show the already announced characters. That's what they did with Brawl, when people thought they'd leak the brawl roster.

True, but they DID spoil the entire Mario Kart 8 roster. We'll just have to wait and see I guess.

Well, they just revealed Meta Knight to be returning, so I can assume next month is when they'll reveal a few remaining veterans like Ice Climbers and Wario.
Actually, Hyrule Warriors releases tomorrow in Japan. If they reveal Ganondorf tomorrow as well, I would expect we get the rest of the roster this month.

Me too. I just want to throw this in...

It really irks me when people say the ICies might not be back because of the technical difficulties with the 3DS that they first had. 1. This was over a YEAR ago 2. Rosalina and Luma are in the game, and Luma has a TOTALLY DIFFERENT moveset than Rosalina. The ICies share the SAME, EXACT MOVES! If you can throw in a dual character in which one plays different than the other, AND have it work, how can you not include a dual character in which both characters play the same and have it work?

This doesn't really add anything, but they DID have one of if not the best victory theme in Brawl.

Dear God, man. Do we really have to go through with this again? Other than the dual character gimmick, there is no conceivable way that Rosalina & Luma play exactly like the Ice Climbers. In fact, there are so many reasons as to why they don't play alike that I don't even know where to start.

I know. That's what I'm saying. How can you have a dual character that basically has two movesets, and not have a dual character with one moveset? Sorry if the other post led you astray. I got confused writing it myself. Does anyone have ideas for a new ICies stage?

Well, one could be based on Ice Climber for NES. Another could be a frozen tundra with an aurora in the sky. What do you think?

I feel like Summit can come back as a Returning stage.

Since Balloon Fight is on the 3DS version, I believe we'll get something 8-Bit this time around for the climbers.

You could be right about that. Also, what do ya think of my for an Ice Climber stage set in a frozen tundra with aurora in the sky?

The frozen tundra with aurora sky is a very good idea. But how would it work? Just plain and flat? I guess what I'm asking is, what kind of stage dynamics would it have to set it apart from other stages? But don't get me wrong, if that would be it, I'd be fine with it.

There could be gimmicks to it. I don't what. But, all in all, it would be a good idea for a stage.

I agree. Good idea. Maybe there's the bottom of a mountain on one side of the stage? Possibly those vultures/condors/Pterodactyl things could make an appearance and carry a player into the air and drop them at times?

If for some reason Ice Climbers is cut, I'm 100% sure that it will be done reluctantly due to programming issues. There's no way Sakurai would want to drop such popular characters.

But I'm pretty sure they'll be back, the 3DS is no old lady, it'll be able to handle anything the GameCube could do.

That's possible. Also, the idea of an aurora in the background sorta came to my mind because of the Aurora Area from Kirby's Return to Dreamland. Another gimmick could be that it can either snow or hail, almost like the season change gimmick from the Yoshi's Island stage in Brawl. What do ya think of that?

That'd be neat. Maybe, and very rarely, the hail could hit a player and deal small bits of damage?

That would be cool (no pun intended). Also, in addition to the Polar Bears and Condors, what about having Topis in the background (those enemies that make ice floors in Ice Climber on NES)? I think they were absent in Brawl, unlike the Polar Bear. No cameo whatsoever.

Well, I've never played "Ice Climber" so I'm just taking reference from basic knowledge and Smash Bros. references, but I guess, from the description you have, they could be a good addition to this alleged stage. I'll be sure to look them up. But I feel that if somehow, someway, all this is implemented into a stage for them, it'd get a bit chaotic. If we're going to include stage hazards, we should limit it to 2, those being the condor things and these "Topis".

Well, I meant that some could be just part of the background, not stage hazards.

Also, for music, they should include these 2 songs from Ice Climber (on NES).
