Editing demo screenshots bares no significance. For all we know, there could be 10 more characters or no more characters. We just don't know at all.

Not to mention the demo doesn't have Zelda, Kirby, Wario, Pokemon Trainer, Snake, and several more confirmed character. In fact the screen barely has enough room to fit all the 26 confirmed we have now.

Usually, Sakurai reveals all the characters by the release of a Smash game

this means, he has until January 22nd to reveal all the characters

....we have 26 confirmed so far (The 23 + Sheik, Ganondorf, and Luigi)

he only has 11 weeks to reveal all the characters

he usually reveals characters once every two weeks

that leaves us with about 5-7 characters left.....leaving us with about 29-31 characters...which is rather pathetic
This means that if the game had been released on december, the roster would have been smaller by 5 characters?
I'm sorry to dissapoint you, but I don't think it makes sense.

29-31 is pathetic? Tell me a half decent fighter game that has over 30 characters?

There is none...

...he certainly has no hesitation revealing secret characters, considering Sonic and Snake are secret characters, and most likely, so is Dedede.
Huh. How are you so sure they're secret characters? I mean, putting them on the dojo kinda defeats the whole point of them being secret if they actually are.

I don't think the amount of room left on that screen has any influence on this. It's a demo, after all. My theory is that one more character will be revealed, and then the rest will be unlockable. Which will probably be wrong in the long run, but i had to throw out that theory for the sake of discussion.

The DOJO does not dictate the number of characters, items, and stages in the game. Brawl is Brawl. The DOJO is just a big PR stunt to build hype for the game. Brawl's development dictates updates on the DOJO. The game could have 139 characters for all we know. The DOJO may just continue updating after the game's release for marketing reasons (not everyone will obtain it on opening day).

The icons on the demo are way too big, they have little to do with what the actual game could be

NO HE DIDN'T. People just interpret what he said as meaning that because it's what they want to hear, because it helps them prove a point they think they have.

So, for the record.

Sakurai has NOT said that all characters would be released.

He has NOT said that unlockable characters will be on the Dojo, OR that they wouldn't.

Everyone has no idea what they're talking about and I'm tired of it.

Did I miss anything?

Brawl Does....
He asked if it was balanced... which we can't answer yet.

And I'm tempted to say Marvel Vs. Capcom 2... but we all know that's not true.

Why is this thread still open? Of COURSE we're going to be getting more than 28 characters... or whatever the TC said. There's no doubt about it.

Their is no doubt we will get 30-40 characters in this game. Assuming capt. falcon, luigi, mr game and watch [ they said that there wouldn't be ice climbers, pichu and mr g&W but now who knows] at least 3 more pokemon [lucario,blazeakin,mewtwo???]
ness, [another legend of zelda, fire elbem, metriod, starfox, character] Assuming toad, bowser jr, and walugi will be in it. And that leaves maybe a few more guess characters [megaman,rayman, etc] and 1 more third party [dbz,crash,spyro,sonic etc.]

Really? He did it with Melee. One character a week.

Yeah no he didn't. He didn't add the unlockables at all until after release.

And I am pretty sure the demo char and stage select screens were just that, demo's they aren't the final ones.

I'm calling 35 characters. We've got 22 already (add C. Falcon, Luigi & Gannondorf). 25BottomLine, even if the remaining 3 unannounced melee fighters come back (28) there is still room for a good hand full of New out of the blue characters. With 35 they've got room to put obvious choices and peoples most requested. I'm in the camp of the bigger select-screen the better. Wifi, constantly fighting different characters. . . good stuff. Mortal Kombat: Armageddon had 60 fully 3D individual fighters so . . . it can be done.

Yea mortal combat armaggedon is a good game and they fit 60 people. It can be done but like I posted before a couple is obvious.

melee revealed all the characters after the game was released so brawl will probably keep at least a few characters secret even if the dojo reveals some before the release.

Don't forget that Sakurai never confirmed that all 3rd party characters would be unlockable.

While I am a Bowser main (proud).. I also play as CF, Ganon, and Falco pretty often. I'm worried about CF and Falco returning... very much...

The Demo is no evidence and the lineup can change.
Don't ever think negative, think positive. Brawl will kick you in the lungs, that is how awesome it is.

What makes you think that the demo screen is the real character selection screen? That's just foolish.

There is no rule that they have to cram all the characters into one screen. Maybe there will be four character "wheels" that provide room for plenty of fighters.

1. ....we have 26 confirmed so far (The 23 + Sheik, Ganondorf, and Luigi)

2. he only has 11 weeks to reveal all the characters

3. he usually reveals characters once every two weeks

4. that leaves us with about 5-7 characters left.....leaving us with about 29-31 characters...which is rather pathetic
1. If Sheik, Ganondorf, and Luigi are in, Sakurai will announced them. So you need to be including them in your '5-7 characters left' idea.

2. He may continue revealing characters after the game is released (as he did with Melee), as many others have stated.

3. Actually, Sakurai reveals characters more rapidly than once every two weeks.
Here are the dates in which The Dojo has updated characters:
01. Mario (May 23)
02. Link (May 23)
03. Pit (May 25)
May - 3 (but started at end of month)

04. Kirby (Jun 7)
05. Pikachu (Jun 7)
06. Fox (Jun 11)
07. Samus (Jun 15)
08. Wario (Jun 20)
09. Zelda (Jun 25)
June - 6 (but mostly vets, just to catch up)

10. Bowser (Jul 3)
11. Donkey Kong (Jul 12)
12. Zero Suit Samus (Jul 19)
13. Yoshi (Jul 24)
July - 4

14. Ike (Aug 1)
15. Pokemon Trainer (Aug 13)
16. Peach (Aug 17)
17. Diddy Kong (Aug 22)
August - 4

18. Metaknight (Sep 5)
19. Ice Climbers (Sep 14)
20. Snake (Sep 21)
September - 3

21. Lucas (Oct 1)
22. Sonic (Oct 10)
23. King Dedede (Oct 25th)
October - 3

So the normal amount of character updates is around 3-4 per month. That's a bit more than 1 every 2 weeks, which would be 2-3 a month.

4. That would change the accurate estimate to 7-10 more by Japan's release date, which would be 30-33 characters revealed by the time the game is released.

And I'd bet more will be coming, due to point 2.

This thread massively fails

1. Mortal Kombat has over 40 characters... owned!

2. Demo screen doesn't have many of the confirmed characters: Wario, Kirby, PT, Snake, etc.... owned!

3. Sakurai could post 5 characters in one week if he wanted to... owned!

4. Luigi (confirmed by slip), Jigglypuff (confirmed by slip), Ganondorf, and Shiek are all going to be in it for sure. Captain Falcon, Falco, Krystal, and Marth have all been proven highly likely, will be a shock if they are not in it.

36-40

I'm not getting my hopes up too much in terms of characters. Like many people, I'd rather have more well balanced and awesome characters then just more characters. I set my expectation low at 36 because if there are less characters it won't be by much; and it would make me more enthusiastic about the game if the number is higher.

I'm sure this has already been said in this 11 page thread but...whatever.

Melee contains 25 characters (26 with Sheik).

Logically, you can say that all characters will return except for a select few (the clones).

Dr. Mario, Pichu, Roy, Young Link, we can safely remove from the Brawl roster due to Sakurai's statement regarding not all vets returning, and I think it was in reference to clones.

Falco...whatever, personally I feel he won't return, but he has a larger fanbase than the other clones, etc etc.

Ganondorf has been "confirmed" for Brawl already.

So, let's assume Falco will indeed return because there will be a huge outcry if he doesn't.

That's...22 characters (including Sheik) that will return from Melee.

That's great. What about the newcomers though?

Well, the Dojo has already revealed 11 brand spankin new characters, with room already for one more spot (AND more spots likely forthcoming). So let's assume that we KNOW that there are 12 new characters coming in at this point in time.

22+12...oh wait...that's 34 characters we already know about...isn't it? (including Sheik and including ZSS and assuming Falco returns)

So we've already, theoretically assuming the amount of vets returning, exceeded this 30 character threshold.

Read into that as you like, or just accept that "fact" and wait patiently for all the secret characters and such. But...you can't help but wonder...how many characters are left to be revealed? How many more will be revealed on the site, and how many will be hidden until release?

~~~~
OKAY SCREW THIS. I had a whole second post right here about how many hidden characters there could be based on the whole "no secret characters on Dojo" deal, painstakingly ANALYZING the whole thing.
but **** IT it is 6:12 AM and I've stayed up all night. This would make no sense.
:saves for some other time:
This is pretty much the conclusion from said second post.
Basically, I think there will be ABOUT 50 characters in this game, give or take (or probably just take lol) up to 5 for 45. Around 35 characters we already know about, and around 10-15 (excluding Snake/Sonic) hidden characters or newcomers we have yet to know about. It makes sense, really. Sakurai revealed 11 characters after Melee's release, I expect a similar to slightly higher number for Brawl.
Don't give me the whole "50 characters is too much they can't fit that much etc" bull, because for around 22 of them, the development team has already BASICALLY created, barring little tweaks that all the old characters will receive. So 23-28 brand new characters?
Well, I assume that for Melee, that team started off from scratch as the jump from N64 to GCN most likely did not allow them to PHYSICALLY borrow anything from the original SSB. So they likely created 26 all-new characters for that one game.
Why not the same for Brawl? Again, around 22 of the up to 50 characters were all but completed. Did the team reuse stuff from Melee for Brawl? Idunno, but either way, the games feature almost identical fighting engines in terms of moves and such. So it couldn't have taken too long to recreate what was in Melee.
I'd really like to know how long it took the Melee development team from start to finish and how long it is taking the Brawl team. I'm almost POSITIVE that the Brawl team has taken longer. All the more reason for more, more, more. I don't see why so many people believe they aren't "capable" of doing so.
About 35 characters we already know of. About 10-15 characters we don't know of. About 45-50 characters total.
I've been up all night running on ham and orange juice but DAMMIT i'm on to something here.
