Stemming from my idea on the 12th page of the "Next Gen" thread, I've decided to start a thread dedicated to finding the absolute best 50 Pokémon from each Generation, to build the most balanced 200-creature index, cutting the official national dex by more than half.

My system is based around trying to select 3 representatives for each of the 17 types from each Generation. Remember, we are excluding all starter families and legendary Pokemon. I have devised an example list (which you guys may or may not approve of) for the 1st Gen:

1st Generation
> Normal = 6 (Jigglypuff/Wigglytuff, Chansey, Snorlax, Meowth/Persian)
> Fighting = 3 (Machop/Machoke/Machamp)
> Flying = 3 (Scyther, Gyarados, Dragonite)
> Poison = 8 (Grimer/Muk, Gastly/Haunter/Gengar, Oddish/Gloom/Vileplume)
> Ground = 4 (Onix, Geodude/Graveler/Golem)
> Rock = 4 (Onix, Geodude/Graveler/Golem)
> Bug = 4 (Scyther, Pinsir, Paras/Parasect)
> Ghost = 3 (Gastly/Haunter/Gengar)
> Steel = 2 (Magnemite/Magneton)
> Fire = 5 (Magmar, Growlithe/Arcanine, Vulpix/Ninetales)
> Water = 7 (Psyduck/Golduck, Magikarp/Gyarados, Seel/Dewgong, Lapras)
> Grass = 5 (Oddish/Gloom/Vileplume, Paras/Parasect)
> Electric = 5 (Pikachu/Raichu, Electabuzz, Magnemite/Magneton)
> Psychic = 5 (Mr. Mime, Abra/Kadabra/Alakazam, Jynx)
> Ice = 3 (Jynx, Dewgong, Lapras)
> Dragon = 3 (Dratini, Dragonair, Dragonite)
> Dark = 0

I assume that these lists are excluding the starters? Having a list of the 'best' 1st gens without Charizard, Blastoise, or Venusaur would be kind of awkward if starters were allowed.

If we're looking for pokemon that are memorable as well, I'd say Ditto.

For other gens, I'll say... Skitty and Delcatty are the only ones I can think of right now, for whatever reason.

Yes, these completely exclude the starters and legendaries. You know I would have put them all in there if they did include them ;)

Seviper...

****, I'm still out. Let me check the official pokedex and come back here later.

EDIT: Hey, what about the Caterpie/Weedle evolution chains?

EDITEDIT: AND... Porygon.

EDITEDITEDIT: Also, Togepi for the 2nd gen pokemon.

EDITEDITEDITEDIT: First off, I'm sorry. 2nd, Lickitung.

I know that's too many Normal-types, so feel free to not include them.

Caterpie and Weedle familes were cut because that would be 6 Bug types right there, and I felt Scyther and Pinsir were definitely more rewarding. And Porygon was highly considered, but I felt that the Magnemite family represented man-influenced Pokemon the best. And Lickitung, well, he's definitely an option.

What I've noticed about the four regions is that each connotes a different season of the year.

Kanto = Spring
Hoenn = Summer
Johto = Autumn
Sinnoh = Winter

I think this might need to be taken into consideration when selecting which Pokemon represent which region the best (hell, didn't I have a thread similar to that once?) and furthermore, which Pokemon should be selected for this project. That being said, my list above is incredibly subject to change.

I'm pretty sure you said that in the "5th Gen thread".

The list so far is good, nice job.

If Sinnoh=Winter, I guess... Mamoswine and Gallade?

EDIT: Oh, wow, I'm an idiot... I meant Froslass, I have absolutely no idea whatsoever why I said Gallade. Sorry.

I don't like the way this thing is organized...

Each representing multiple types...

FLying, for example, has better representatives by itself such as PIdgeot and farfetch'd but the way this thing is organized they would have to remove dragonite, scyther, meowth, and snorlax so the flying reps are forced to be other types that people wouldn't usually use to represent flying type

ALSo, you missed that Dewgong has 2 forms...it evolves from seal

Oh.... No, Seel is only a WATER-type pokemon. Purely water-type.

That or Spire messed up. I'm too lazy to check right now.

Perhaps categorizing Pokemon by primary type only would be wiser in this endeavor, with the exception of those such as the Pidgey family, who obviously represent their secondary type more.

The list looks good, but I think it should include :079: and :080: because Slowpoke is well known and if it's included, we would need it's evolved form.

if you include them in the list then you should include :090: too i mean with out :090: you couldnt have :080:. and in my opinion you are missing this pokemon :094:, :054: and :052:. if those pokemon are in the list sorry caus i am not looking at the list as i am writing right now..

EDIT: yeah never mind :052: and :094: are there but i still think :054: should be there. in the series it was one of misty's most important(and random) pokemon

ANOTHER EDIT(sorry): i just noticed that :054: was also there. sorry didnt see the name there.

I'd consider adding Horsea/Seadra so that you could include Kingdra as a rep for 2nd gen. It's a nice start.

EDIT:

2nd Generation
> Normal = 8 (Igglybuff, Blissey, Togepi/Togetic, Smeargle, Girafarig, Teddiursa/Ursaring)
> Fighting = 1 (Heracross)
> Flying = 10 (Hoppip/Skiploom/Jumpluff, Skarmory, Togetic, Murkrow, Crobat, Yanma, Mantine, Gligar)
> Poison = 4 (Quilfish, Spinarak/Ariados, Crobat)
> Ground = 6 (Steelix, Swinub/Piloswine, Larvitar/Pupitar, Gligar)
> Rock = 6 (Larvitar/Pupitar/Tyranitar, Shuckle, Magcargo, Sudowoodo)
> Bug = 6 (Scizor, Heracross, Spinarack/Ariados, Shuckle, Yanma)
> Ghost = 1 (Misdreavus)
> Steel = 3 (Scizor, Steelix, Skarmory)
> Fire = 5 (Magby, Houndour/Houndoom, Slugma/Magcargo)
> Water = 7 (Kingdra, Quilfish, Chinchou/Lanturn, Mantine, Marill/Azumaril)
> Grass = 4 (Bellossom, Hoppip,/Skiploom/Jumpluff)
> Electric = 7 (Elekid, Pichu, Chinchou/Lanturn, Mareep/Flaaffy/Ampharos)
> Psychic = 3 (Smoochum, Wobbuffet, Girafarig)
> Ice = 4 (Smoochum, Sneasel, Swinub/Piloswine)
> Dragon = 1 (Kingdra)
> Dark = 5 (Sneasel, Tyranitar, Murkrow, Houndour/Houndoom)

In 1st Gen I switched Grimer/Muk for Zubat/Golbat and Psyduck/Golduck for Horsea/Seadra. If Hitmonchan/Hitmonlee get added I can add Tyrogue/Hitmontop, but I don't want to mess with the list anymore.

I'll put these in order in a minute. Please comment. Remember that there are only 85 pokemon to choose from, so there's tons of filler.

EDIT 2:

51. Spinarak
52. Ariados
53. Crobat
54. Chinchou
55. Lanturn
56. Pichu
57. Igglybuff
58. Togepi

Just because Slowpoke evolves into Slowbro with the help of Shellder in the anime doesn't mean anything. The anime has done tons of things wrong that wasn't like the games which it's supposed to be based upon. So we Slowpoke doesn't need Shellder and vice-versa.

I think it's a bit lame to include members of an evolutionary chain, for example the 3 fighting pokemon are just Machop, Machoke and Machamp. I think ti'd be better if you just went with the final evolutions which would free up more slots (for example, Hitmonchan and Hitmonlee)

i think tyrogue would make a good represenative for the fighting types of 2nd gen.
Yeah but I couldn't include him without without Hitmonchan and Hitmonlee being in 1st gen. Idk what to take out to make room for them.
EDIT:

3rd Generation - 1st Draft
> Normal = 3 (Azurill, Kecleon, Zangoose)
> Fighting = 3 (Breloom, Makuhita/Hariyama)
> Flying = 3 (Beautifly, Tropius, Salamence)
> Poison = 3 (Roselia, Seviper, Dustox)

> Rock = 3(Aron/Lairon/Aggron)
> Bug = 5 (Wurmple/Silcoon/Beautifly/Cascoon/Dustox)
> Ghost = 4 (Shuppet/Banette, Duskull/Dusclops)
> Steel = 6 (Aron/Lairon/Aggron, Beldum/Metang/Metagross)
> Fire = 3 (Torkoal, Numel/Camerupt)
> Water = 7 (Feebas/Milotic, Carvanha/Sharpedo, Spheal/Sealeo/Walrein)
> Grass = 4 (Roselia, Shroomish/Breloom, Tropius)
> Electric = 4 (Electrike/Manectric, Plusle, Minun)
> Psychic = 7 (Wynaut, Ralts/Kirlia/Gardevoir, Beldum/Metang/Metagross)
> Ice = 3 (Spheal/Sealeo/Walrein)
> Dragon = 5 (Bagon/Shelgon/Salamence, Vibrava/Flygon)
> Dark = 3 (Carvanha/Sharpedo, Absol)

I'm a lot more uncertain about this list than the previous one. There are tons of cool pokemon in 3rd gen and I tried to add what I thought was most important. Comments are welcome.

EDIT 2:

101. Wurmple
102. Silcoon

i dont know i think the series is pretty important when deciding what pokemon to put in the list. the series is in my opinion just as important as the games. even if the series doesnt matter a thing

What about Houndoom for dark maybe? Some of the steel, dark pokemon from 2nd Gen should go there, being their first appearance to represent the type. We can't forget the strong Tyranitar either, or Dragonite, or Metagross, or Salamence or Garchomp. They were like near-legendaries.

I think I'll make my decisions by which monsters are the best-calibrated. Ludicolo, for example, is a much better Water-type than Crawdaunt (in my opinion), simply because its Water weaknesses are canceled outright by the Grass attribute. It's not just a pile of attacks glued together with the animal species as a base.

To paraphrase:

Ludicolo for Water-type,
Ralts for Psychic-type,
Torkoal for Fire-type,
Solrock for Rock-type,
Vigoroth for Normal-type,
and Trapinch for Ground-type.

Is anyone else tasting pop-ups?
