I did a quick search of the forum and found nothing along these lines, so here we go:

What, in your opinion, is the best multiplayer game? Why?

I suppose all games are elligible, including MMOs and such, but you gotta explain why they're the best.

Team Fortress 2. This game is all about team gameplay. Individual scores don't really matter in this game unlike Counterstrike, it's all about a team victory. One member can't carry a team either, the whole team has to work together for anything to get done. Also, the classes have great variety, and a fair amount of balance. There's pretty much a class for everyone, whether you want to lay down some impressive firepower (heavies), charge blindly at the opposing team (pyros), or just cause general chaos (spies). A fantastic multiplayer experience.

Counterstrike/CS source. I know I just sort of bashed this game, but it's still a very good multiplayer experience. It's a very challenging game that can take ages to get good at. Seriously, my first few months of that game were spent mostly in spectator I died so much. But it's so satisfying when you start to really get good at that game and start dominating. Also, though some weapons are clearly better than others (And every weapon is better than the UMP...) no weapon is totally unusable, Ak's and M4's may dominate, but I still see people do really well with the tmp/mac10, the galil, and the famas.

Super Smash Bros. (The entire series). This is a great series for multiplayer, just because it's too much fun to play with friends. The satisfaction of sending you friends flying off of the screen is fantastic, and some really ridiculous stuff happens in 4 player brawls. Moves like falcon punch becomes so much fun, because eventually someone will stop paying attention and get nailed or get hit into it. The amount of WTF moments I've had playing smash are many in number.

Besides Smash, I'd have to go with the arcade Ninja Turtle games. Going through stages with a total of four people was awesome.

Smash Bros. (all of them, mostly 64), for reasons listed above. Mario Kart as well, simply because it's pick-up-and-play and it's a load of fun.

And, dare I say Mario Party? Despite what some may think, the Mario Party franchise (the first four more so) is amazing at parties. Mario Party 2 FTW.

Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance is a great co-op game.

Hm...maybe Smash should be excluded.

@ Jimnymebob: That's odd, as I've never heard anyone say that before. Care to elaborate?

Oh wait, even better:

Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventure. Best multiplayer EVAR! Because your battling your friends while saving the maids. What's not to love?

Gah I love picking up other people in that thing.

Better than any smash game

Bloody Puppy hit the nail on the head for TF2. Just make sure you get it for PC.

Obviously, Smash is one of the best.

Phantasy Star Online for the Cube is pretty epic with 4 player split screen. Probably the best RPG on the Cube (but that's not saying much).

Bomberman is ALWAYS fun. I got Bomberman Blast for Wii and played with 6 people on one Wii (it supports 8). You can't go wrong there.

Tetris and Tetris Attack/Puzzle League are great, too. Things can get really intense.

And of course, Rock Band/Guitar Hero are great party games. You really feel like you're working together.

EDIT: Forgot about one game: Mario Kart Double Dash. I played this in LAN play a few days ago, and it was amazing. We had 6 karts (12 people) going, and it was probably the most fun I've had this year.

Super Smash Bros/Super Smash Bros Melee/Super Smash Bros Brawl- For obvious reasons, these games provide for very fun times during parties. People can have a blast in hectic 4 person FFA matches. Honestly, I take Smash more seriously. I've played Melee and currently play Brawl on a competitive level, so I'm not exactly into the whole FFA thing. But even so, I certainly have tons of fun doing what I do and proving myself against other people. In that sense, Smash is a game for everyone.

Pokemon- Also a game for everyone. It can be taken lightly and people can just battle with whatever Pokemon they have. Or they could be like me and play competitively to test yourself against other players. Again, Pokemon is a game for everyone.

Call of Duty- I also played this competitively, but to be honest, I had tons of fun leading a competitive team. The sense of comradery was amazing. I feel like Call of Duty is a game best played on a more serious level to be honest, because that's when you start playing with like-minded people and communciated with them during matches to figure out strategies.

If you've never played Baldurs Gate for the PS2 before you should. It was one of my favourite multiplayer games. It's quite old, but is really fun, and is as serious as the player, so if you mess around, you'll enjoy it, and if you are focused, you'll enjoy it.
It's an action RPG (loosely) for two players, and you can pick between an archer, a sorceress or a dwarf.
According to the box it is a "Tour de force" XD
You basically run around killing things, and collecting weapons and items that are dropped along the way. It's more fun with two people, and if you don't take it seriously i.e stealing the gold after the other person's killed the enemy, or while they are dropping weapons to sort out their inventory, steal them and don't give them back
It'll keep you occupied over a holiday.

You should be able to find it pre-owned, but good luck in finding the sequel- it disappeared from existence were I live :(

Dark Alliance was the type of game that once you and a friend pick up, you don't set down until it's completed. Despite it being a pretty linear game, it was a hell of a lot of fun. I would love to see a Baldur's Gate 3.

Phantasy Star Online for the Cube was loads of fun also, again, despite being linear. I played for hundreds of hours with a single friend of mine, leveling up feverishly. Often times it became incredible competitive, despite us being on the same team. The game was horribly repetitive, but there was just something that kept me hooked for ages; perhaps it was the uniqueness in the setting and design. Basically, it was a futuristic D&D, but still remains one of my favorite multiplayer games ever.

Star Wars Battlefront (not the second) was one of my most played multiplayer games to date. Bespin Platforms will remain one of the best stages ever created in the history of man.

007: Nightfire was infinitely fun. While Goldeneye began the multiplayer-shooter genre, Nightfire had the absolute best 007 multiplayer fun.

Metal Arms: Glitch in the System. Despite being a bit lackluster here and there, it was incredibly fun.

I never got to play the 2nd one Spire, because I was at the final part when it came out, so I decided to leave it for a few days before I got it.
When I went to get it about 4 days later, it had sold out everywhere :(, and I wasn't going to pay £40-£45 for a used cop, when the original was only £35 a few days ago.
Was the second as good as the first?

Super Smash Bros. Brawl by a long shot. It fixed all the problems Melee had for starters. It actually added GOOD characters unlike Melee. It can be as luck oriented or skill involved as you want it to be by changing the item settings and the stages. It's the best when playing with a group of about ten people because matches are short and can have four people playing=lots of switch-offs and everyone gets a good chance of playing. It's completely unique. Every other fighter requires you to deplete your oponent's life bar. Smash has a completely different goal. You can also choose from a cast of almost 40 characters all of whom are memorable video game characters.

NOTHNG TOPS SMASH (and Brawl is the best of them)

I assume you're referring to Baldur's Gate. The second one had some parts that were better than the first, but it felt a bit too forced. For instance, the second half of the game revolved around the planes of Earth, Air, Fire, and Water (yeah, very cliche), and then the final boss was fought on the plane of darkness. Basically, it just felt like an expansion to the first game, retaining all of the gameplay elements with the addition of all new stages, characters, weapons, and armor. There were some very memorable stages though, like the blood-stained underground laboratories of some evil scientist. Otherwise, everything (like this golden-clockwork palace thing with sentient robots or something of the like...) was very unrealistic and far too fantasy for me.

The first will always be much more memorable, but if you can find a copy of the second, it is worth a play through. The level of difficulty far outweighs its predecessor.

Those 4 games are extremely fun when playing multi player. Hiding in tiny holes waiting for you opponent (in that one stage with the tunnels), shooting them and then seeing there expression is always a blast.

I have mixed feelings about Mario Party to be quite honest. It is fun at times, but sometimes it's just...meh.

Smash however, is always fun and never ever gets boring.

Tribes, Tribes2, UT, Quake 2, UT2003/2004. Nothing will come close to the greatness of those godlike FPS games.

SSB64 online is also good. Also other emulated games online.

Warcraft 3, Starcraft, and Diablo 2 have awesome onlines, experiences I don't really regret.

Call of Duty 4 had some fun online but it's dying now. All my favorite S&D servers are going away.

Thanks for the info Spire :D.
I enjoyed the Gauntlet level on the 1st one, before you fight the end of chapter 1 boss. That was really fun with two people, and repeatedly falling down holes an having to backtrack to revive the other person XD.

Mario Kart 64. Battle Mode at the Block Fort and the racing with just friends is awsome. Favorite Course to race at is DK Jungle Raceway. In fact going to Mario Kart it tonight. I'm generally a D.K. user while my friends use Yoshdawg, Bowsercake and Wario.

Um, this isn't on topic exactly, (nor is it off, to be fair) but has anyone tried Left 4 Dead? Quick impressions?

[Edit:]

To answer my own question, it's amazingly fun. I've only played the demo (as it doesn't come out til like the 18th) but it's definitely worth the time to download the demo.

Kirby Super Star.

Also, Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World were so much better when played with a friend.

Cruisin in my Jeep.. I wish.
lets see, smash, halo and call of duty, rock band, mario kart. those are probably the best. why? because all this randomness happens in those games that make gaming worthwhile.

mario kart has to be my favorite. i mean you can be in first for the whole race then all of the sudden all this random stuff happens and you end up in like 4th. its so crazy

Gears of War and Gears of War 2. This game franchise is endlessly entertaining when you get a couple good friends together and choose to either dominate or just mess around online. I've been playing Gears since its release and the multiplayer hasn't gotten stale for me yet. I can't wait to play more of Gears 2 just to see how much Epic improved on the multiplayer engine.

Has anyone noticed that there are a serious lack of non-online multiplayer games for everything cept the Wii?

Okay, back on topic. My best multi-player experience will forever be Goldeneye 64. The level design was almost to the point where you could make up little mini-games for yourself (Ex: 'Guess which bathroom stall I'm in' for the Facility level)

For playing with anyone, playing Counter-Strike: Source in a pub/big server is great. Plenty of shooting and lolworthy moments. Especially when people use their microphones and hold discussions/flamewars/random babbles. It truely feels "multiplayer", you're interacting with random people from all over the world.

And for friends you know and play with in real life: hands down Call of Duty 4. A lot of my friends play that and it's fun to just chill on the weekends playing COD and talking trash. Maybe Gears of War 2, but I haven't played it enough.

Honorable mentions: Mario Party... even though those games can get long as hell. and DDRMAX2, if you want to count that.

World of Warcraft.

Until I realized that I'm basically renting an account for $15 a month, and wasted countless weeks. [Not days, weeks] on 1 fricken character to 70 alone. *sigh*

Though I'm happy I got the crack out of my system, it was still fun.
