NEW YORK (Reuters) - Video games might be regarded as an obsession for youngsters but in fact the average player is aged 35, often overweight, introverted and may be depressed, according to a U.S. study.

Researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention looked at the behavior of 552 adults aged between 19 to 90 from the Seattle-Tacoma area.

They found 249 of these, or around 45 percent, were video-game players, with men accounting for 56 percent of these.

The researchers found that the men who played video games weighed more and used the Internet more than other men.

Women who played video games reported greater levels of depression and poorer overall health than non-gamers with researcher James Weaver and his colleagues suggesting video gaming for adults may be a form of "digital self-medication."

They said women in particular may immerse themselves in brain-engaging digital environments as a means of self-distraction.

"In short, they literally 'take their minds off' their worries while playing a video game," the researchers said in a statement.

Adult video gamers also seemed less outgoing, or extroverted, and less social and assertive than non-gamers.

This was consistent with prior research in adolescent video game enthusiasts that tied video game playing to sedentary habits, weight issues and mental health concerns.

Adult video gamers of both sexes relied more on the Internet for social support than non-gamers, which supports prior research suggesting that adult video game players may "sacrifice real-world social activities to play video games."

The study, published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, concluded that there was "measurable" associations between playing video games and health risks.

"As hypothesized," the researchers reported, a higher body weight and a greater number of "poor mental health days" differentiated adult video gamers from non-gamers.

Kinda interesting, but I suppose not too much of a surprise. You visit any LAN gaming center and you could probably see this for yourself. Though, if you're visiting a LAN gaming center you might already be in this category anyways. x3

Something irks me about this research, but I can't put my finger on it. There's too many factors then just gaming.

I go to Lan gaming centers every now and then, I don't see any overweight middle aged men, mostly just teens and asians pumping hard-style music while playing DOTA.

I dunno, the research sounds flawed after looking at this. I really think more factors are involved with this lifestyle, but I'm no expert either.

35 sounds too old

how do they define gamer lmao

cuz there are millions of gamers 12~25

are there really enough 40~50 year old men to round it out?

Games make people depressed haha... Do they know what depressed even means? Anyways usually all the gamers I know are like 19 or 20, and also alot of people play games here and there but that doesn't really make them a "gamer".

So, do games make people sad, or do sad people play games.

I think if I were lonely, overweight, and depressed... who am I kidding? Being overweight, lonely, and depressed, I actively seek out videogames to bring short term bursts of amusement. It's not like I picked up a game and suddenly became fat, lonely, and sad.

Correlation does not imply causation.

This. It is more likely that depresses people are drawn to video games than video games making people this way.

Either way, correlation does not imply causation.

haha if i saw 35 year olds just hanging out at LAN centers i would be pleasntly surprised but to each his own most of the LAN centers around here cater to the 19-25 group that hangs out and brings there friends with them to play

this study is also worthless because they took a small group of people and sample of game they played and made that fact and people choose to believe it.... but if you are a gamer and the people you hang out with and you play a range of games you can see that most people are actually really healthy people ....

This research is dumb, it said it only took adults 19-whatever, but there are so many kids my age (14), a bit older and a bit younger that play video games it's ridiculous. Maybe Seattle's just ****ed up.

Solid's right, that study was dumb. Regardless, if I were 35 years old, overweight, and all I was doing was gaming--I'd be pretty depressed too.

I know how everyone's saying that this is bs because they don't seem to be counting the underage gamers, but what you have to remember is that there is one gamer out there who's 45,000 years old and brings the average back up to 35.

Also, the most important thing to remember about statistics and research: Correlation =/= Causation. Depression could cause people to retreat into games, games could create a disconnect that leads to depression, or there could be a third, outside factor. Seattle could just be incredibly depressing. It's probably all that rain.

I believe this is an obvious example that you can curve, do incorrect statistics as much as you can as long as you choose the wrong cross-selection (21-90) and you don't explain your definition of what you try to prove. In this case: depression

I didn't read the rest of this thread, but that study is obviously flawed because it only picked people from a single area, and didn't include anyone under the age of 19. I'm in statistics at my college

they shouldn't be able to say the average gamer is 35 when they only interviewed people older than 18.

They didn't take a wide enough sample.

Thats like asking 200 people coming out of stop and shop who they were voting for and then putting that number up as a national survey,

It's the news twisting things.

A study by Harvard Medical School said that 85% of people have an IQ of under 100.

Am I doing it right?
