Australian wide competitive player ranks!

Hey guys. I have this idea that i wanna share with the Aus smash community and gauge interest. Each state currently has power rankings as a sort of muck around thing. I was thinking that it would be cool to actually have a ranked leaderboard for boasting rights as to who the best smashers are in Australia backed up by points and stats. Could possibly do it the same system that rank the best tennis players eg. Where you place at a tournament will determine how many points you earn and the bigger the tournament the more points you will earn in comparison to smaller tournaments. We would record all the placings for people making it out of pools so then we can tally how far they make it through the bracket and award points to what stage of bracket they made.

I think it would be cool to give some of us a bit more of a competitive drive to get better as players and it could be cool if people push themselves further through bracket to break their own PB. It might also raise the competitive bar for Australian players and make us a little more relevant as good players in comparison to the rest of the community. So guys share your thoughts, ideas, do and don't of this and anything else relevant. I'm also semi new to the Aus smash scene and am unsure if this has been attempted before. We are a competitive community and there's nothing wrong with a little friendly competition.

I think we used to have some sort of point ranking systme back in 2008 when Jei and Vermy ran the stigma tournaments. Although I may be wrong, I was pretty new at the time so I cant say it was like this for sure.

Would be a cool system though, I just dont think we're active enough atm though. :s

We have done point based RANBATS (ranking battles) in 2008-2009 and we have attempted an Australian wide ranking system. Just not together.
The Australian ranking just fails and the RANBATS only work with a dedicated TO and let's be honest, no one gives a sh** anymore. I know I don't and CAO isn't here anymore.
Leisha Stigma was in 2009 and vermy had nothing to do with running it. All Jei and X baby.

Activity levels are probably fine, just lacking players to give the lists variation.

We've discussed Aus power rankings, but it's a pretty clear top 10 (or at least 6-7).
Rankings could provide more incentive for lower ranked players to move up, but I'm not sure about motivation levels at present.

I believe that the rankings will give more incentive for players to get better and beat there peers, and also with the motivation this could give after some time it could be enough for the lower to mid level players to get better and eventually give the list variation. Having some sort of visual representation that you're better than someone is always motivating. (For me at least) :p

top 5/6 is pretty set for aus melee anyway (me, s.d, deks, cao, zxv... keeez)

too hard to rank people properly cause anyone could beat anyone if the conditions are right.

I never thought any of the brawl/melee pr's wer solid cept for the top 3 or 4.. results are always so random/situational.

I'd agree with Bahoo here: As a person who arrived late to the scene myself, it's kind of dull to see it dying. A project like this would have to be undertaken by newer players who know the situation (which is rare; i've been to 4 tournaments and I have no idea who is best outside my community) and who give 2 cents (thus why it's probably gonna be a newer player). Still, I think if something like this was done successfully, it might re-invigorate our scene a little, and if nothing else I think that's worth it, so I think if anyone's up for it, yeah totally we should do this.

Oh yeah, I think I might be pushing for this more because my PR was locked.

Mine is the mystical land of NSW: I can't remember who wins more out of shaya or ted but i'm 80% sure it's ted. Other than that, I cannot really help you, i'm afraid. :(

I'm waiting for a large tourney so I can begin to see how I can get up there too. =)

Are there any national tournaments other than BAM (assuming that's happening this year again)? I think most of the top 10 are pretty obvious, but having some more recent results would help with filling in the last couple of spots.

there u go theres ur top 10 now get motivated already LOL

but seriously theres no real point to this currently, the rankings for top 8 (toshi is probs easy 9th IMO) is pretty set in stone. like legitimately the rankings just above are pretty much what you will get if anyone did do anything properly, so consider it done.

as for single state PRs, most lack either enough people to make a PR, or people dont turn up to things consistently or enough.

if you want motivation ive got good motivation for you:

dekar is a bad person
dekar wins tournaments somehow
please help me and sam beat dekar more he does not deserve to win

there u go motivation to become the best

mango hates dekar
mango is best smasher ever

see it works

Instead of an obvious top ten containing superheroes and Matrix anomalies, may I propose a BOTTOM 10 ranking for each state. The incentive to get off the bottom would be greater than reaching the top imo.
