All the rules have been thrown out the window. Here's my best guess at the moment which characters now have the potential to be assist trophies:

Mario Series: Hammer Bros (confirmed), Bowser Jr., Toadsworth, Waluigi, Count Bleck, Geno, Mallow

Zelda Series: Imp Midna (I can't believe it's come to this...), Skull Kid, Vaati, Old Man Zelda

Metroid: Dark Samus, U-Mos the Lumenoth, One or all of the Hunters

Pokemon: Errr... Pokeballs?

Star Fox: Peppy, Slippy, General Pepper, ANDROSS!!!

Kirby: ?

Fire Emblem: The Black Knight :(

F-Zero: Goroh (confirmed), Pico, Jody Summer

Earthbound: Paula, Jeff, Poo

Others: Nintendog (confirmed), Dr. Kawasaki

Britain, glaring at you **** yanks.
And again, everybody should calm down.

Look at the current list of ATs.

Hammer Bro: Generic enemy who's been in many games. Recognizable, but was hardly a possibility as a playable character.

Nintendog: Seriously now.

Samurai Goroh: Now he had a realistic shot, but his demise was probably the matter of representation of different series. Like many of our members, I doubt Sakurai just wants to rep the big series by adding a few thousand characters and then just a few smaller ones for good measure. He apparently felt that giving F-Zero more reps had lower priority than other characters.

In the end, any character who's not going to be in would not have been in if it weren't for the ATs.
Ridley, for example, will NOT be an AT. He's quite a main character, and there's no reason for him not to be playable. That would be almost like adding WW Link as an AT, as he was the hero of his own game(s).

Think of it as a friendly nod to the people who wish for unlikely characters like Tetra, Mona, Hunters, and so on.

QFT

Everytime somebody says Ridley wont be playable in Brawl, a Kitten dies. By my hands. I have a pile in my garage.

Saying Ridley should be an AT is like saying Mario should come out of a pokeball. It's stupid, people!

It really is a cool idea, I will admit. My only concern is that Toad will simply be moved from Peach's B to an Assist Trophy, dancing evermore in front of my face as an NPC of some sort. =/ I approve of Sakurai's three choices thus far, at least.

WW Link - Groudon is not playable despite being on the cover of his own game. Argue that he's not the main character and it brings to point Red/Satoshi/Ash is not a playable character either.
Ridley - could go either way - though AT would make for a more realistic form of it.
F-Zero getting no further rep. - Samurai was the only hope? Strange that because I can think of many other characters who would be more original than a fatter-target slower Marth.
The ATs will likely be the characters that got a lot of love though aren't fit for a character choice.

This bothers me because it is going to take some of the fun out of unlocking characters or seeing newcomers in Brawl. I now know that Goroh is not in Brawl, so it takes away a bit of the excitement. You know what I mean? I can't think anymore, "Maybe the next character I unlock will be Samurai Goroh, that would be awesome". Basically, there is not as much possibilities for speculating anymore.

don't some people get it that SONIC is NEVER EVER EVER going to be in SSBB he is not nintendo so he will never be in the game. this has been explained too many times
He's right guys. Sonic isn't Nintendo, so he won't be fighting against Nintendo's crew such as Mario, Link, Pikachu, Kirby, Samus, Fox, Snake...

Hang on, who was that last one?

[JOY TO THE WORLD=Assist Trophies]

Sakurai is a man of genius.
Hes aknowledging all of the [TERRIBLE] character ideas people here have fabricated, but not making them playable, in order to keep the game serious.
This game just keeps getting better.

Then why are you checking the brawl updates?
Bringing that on yourself imo.

May I ask for the reason why your post starts with my favourite character without any further context given?

I beg to differ. I think that the amount of speculation is still vast and valid, but the nature of speculation is what will now change. Most of the characters for whom we have been collectively fighting will likely make an appearance in Brawl. This does, thankfully, open up a wide number of possibilities as to who will appear in the game PERIOD, either as playable characters or as NPCs.

Mike Jones? Sure. Little Mac? Of course! Tom Nook? Sounds fine.

The question is no longer "Will such-and-such character appear in Brawl?" The answer, barring a few inane suggestions and some VERY obscure choices, is a resounding "yes." Now we must ask: "Will such-and-such character be playable in Brawl?"

While this may dishearten those dedicated fans who have their favorite character "relegated", if you will, to Assist Trophy status, they can at least relish in the fun of having their favorite pop out and dominate the field. As worried as I am that Toad might not be playable (yet AGAIN), I do have faith that Sakurai will create a perfect blend of playable / non-playable characters to satisfy everyone. If Toad, for example, is just an AT, I will still have a fun time playing as Pit and Peach. Sakurai knows what a huge following the Smash games have, and I guarantee that, by including these ATs, he is trying his hardest to satisfy every niche fan that he can.

For those of you still worrying: sleep well. Let thoughts of NPCs not haunt your dreams; instead, let thoughts of ATs reassure your favorite character's appearance. Otherwise, we can just create a "My Favorite Character Is An AT" support group once Brawl is released. =)

All the updates so far have been towards confirming something, I don't mind that. It is the unconfirming that bothers me. Plus, you will still see the assist trophies when you get the game. It takes the fun out of unlocking characters. I can't see "new challenger" and think, "OMG, it might be Goroh" because I would have already seen Goroh in the game many times as an assist character.

This lets them represent more characters in Brawl. What's the problem?

If they're an AT, it's probably because Nintendo wanted the character in but couldn't/wouldn't devote a whole character space to them. This only works out to our benefit.

If you wanna MvC2 the character list, that's cool, but Nintendo is clearly giving careful consideration to which characters are playable. For competitive players, this is a godsend; they can have all the silly characters and weirdness they want without having to sacrifice character attributes and balance. And you can cheer every time your favorite character makes it into an AT.

I actually agree with burrito, to a certain extent, but they aren't going to announce everything previously. It is kind of sad to KNOW, specifically, who won't be playable, but at least it gives you time to get over the heartbreak :)

Edit: What makes Ridley not a good character choice again?

Lack of practicality imo.

Anyhow, AT's are nothing but Sakurai trying to [somewhat] satisfy those who are dying for the crappiest characters to make it into brawl.

Screw you!

Saying Ridley isn't fit for brawl is basically Mario isn't fit for platforming. He flies, he's a villain, he's important to Samus' past. How much better do you get than Ridley?!

I would be more mean and horrible, but i'm tired.

I love this idea. I just hope they don't put important characters (ridley, toad, krystal) in the game as an AT. That is my only concern.

Thankfully, Deathcarter, I would say that the three you mentioned all have very good chances of popping up as playable characters, albeit hidden ones. I'm really holding out for the second one that you mentioned. =)

Wobbles, I love your avatar.

On topic, I think most of you were setting yourself up for dissapointment anyway by hoping for ridiculously unlikely characters. Dark Samus? Come on. You also seem to forget that the characters are just shells, and what's really important is the gameplay.

You don't know that.
Actually he does. Sakurai himself said that, since the very second the game came out every character would be spoiled he preferred to reveal them himself anyway, and be at least able to do so with screenshots and a bit of flair.

Thank GOD.

For a second, I thought Goroh was playable.

This seems like a fun concept. I like it.

Geno was one of the five playable characters, and one of two originals on the team, in Super Mario RPG for the SNES. He was either a star or a spirit from the stars (it's been so long since I've played...) who took the embodiment of a doll in a town Mario visits. Very unique, fun character.

I really fail to see why everyone's so upset about this. Would you rather see Ridley or Mallow or Barbara the Bat as assist trophies, or would you rather the Smash Bros series to just forget them again? As much as I love playing competitively, I'd love to see all the assist trophies to bring back nostalgia, or just scream "OMG, THEY'RE in the game, too?!!?!"

Not to mention, who knows, support characters are allowed in the Marvel vs Capcom tournaments, as well as Naruto: Ultimate Ninja. Maybe assist trophies could make it as legal items in tourny rules for Brawl...

Unless we play as people because we like characters, not because they're top tier.

Ugh, no he does not know that. Sakurai never said, "I am going to reveal every character on my website before Brawl comes out in Japan." I've read the translations, I know what he was talking about.

It says, "#251-260: Sakurai in response to an email asking that everything be unlocked as a default = "Well... that is a tough question. As long as the internet exists, all secrets will be revealed quickly. Sometimes even before the game comes out, even. Secret characters are one of the fun parts of Smash. Although you don't want to find out until the very end, I guess [literally: 'after all,' so there is no doubt in this statement] I'll reveal them. Again, just like "Smash fist" [literally: 'Sumabura ken,' the name of the Japanese SSBM site?] I can't just hold these characters back. "

Just like "Smash fist", I'm assuming he will reveal the characters after the game comes out and I am going to try to avoid the internet as much as possible once Smash Bros. comes out in Japan.

What I don't understand is the emnity that a lot of people have for the Assist Trophies. I see this as meaning that characters that didn't have a realistic shot of being playable, but are still diehard cult favorites, have a real shot of at least being assist trophies. Mabye I'm naive, but I for one thought that the internet would be jumping for joy at this news (or at least that the Goroh fans would be happy that he is at least in the game, albeit not as a playable character).

I wonder if we'll see the Trophy gallery return; if so, do you think that unlocking the Trophies simultaneously unlocks their respective Assist Trophies? For example, finding the Nintendog trophy in, say, Classic Mode, would likewise unlock the Nintendog AT. Just a thought.

That is actually almost exacty how I think it will work. IE: You have to acquire the Samurai Goroh trophy (through the lottery or some sort of 1-player mode) before you can see him in battle. The only road-block I've come across regarding this is that the item itself would be nigh useless until the player gathered the respective trophies that work with it.
