Are Marth and Link Rivals?

hi, i'm Osh, this is my first post this forum. not sure if this is the right place to put this, but...

getting to the point, are Marth and Link rivals in the SSB games? ive seen a number of pics and a vid or two, as well as some mention of link in marth's trophy, on melee, depicting them as enemies repeatedly on melee. i dont have brawl(yet) so i wouldnt know if this carries over to there.

anyway, is there a rivalry between the two master swordsmen, or is it all just speculation. and, if its not just speculation, what could the grounds for it be?

again, this is my first post here, so im not sure if this is the right board to post this on. if i'm wrong, would a mod mind moving this?

I dunno about rivals, I think it's just that they both have swords. Marth is much better, no rivalry there.

Oh yeah, I loved that event back in the day 'cause I mained Marth, even when I didn't know what I was doing. Nowadays, I wonder how I did it without the C-stick.

Well Link > Roy, so I guess there is some truth to saying that Link and Marth are the two best swordsman... unless Peach pulls out a 'beam sword'. Than Link's got problems.

well im not trying to start anything but I think Link is pretty even with Marth.
I main Link, and i use him as a counter to Marth.
but yeah i think its just that they both have swords.

The only things that bug me about Link are the Bombs and that spacing fairs against his shield doesn't work against the hookshot. Once I get over those two obstacles, Link's no big deal.

Countering his recovery is also really funny.

But yeah, I'd say that they're pretty even, although Marth definitely has the advantage.

without bombs rangs and any spaced fair or nairs Marth controls Link.
btw just edgegaurd Link with fair off the edge and hes ****ed up.
Dtilt and Fsmash (spaced) is gg for Link.

Hm, well hear this. You say Marth has the advantage if you remove Links projectiles. Well that doesn't take a genius to see the faster one would have an advantage. Personally I found Link to be a more then formidable opponent then Marth, as my friend who had Marth as a second was constantly defeated by my Link, also my second. Link's sword skills are deadly in conjunction with his Projectiles. All i would need is one Boomerang then i could follow up with several strikes. My friends Marth could do the same to my Link as well if he got the first strike.

So they are pretty much even, Just look up Ken Vs Aniki on Youtube. I know Ken pretty much always Wins but in every video i have seen it is a close match.

Sorry to bring a Brawl reference to the Melee boards, but in Brawl there is an event match where you must play Marth to protect Zelda from Ganondorf. This was a major WTF moment for me.

Yeah, same here..... I can kinda see Marth and Zelda together, though. She's a tomboy (well, she can turn into a guy, or weth sheik is) and Marth always went for the "warrior princesses," didn't he? Plus, Marth is the best guy in the game IMO (Fox doesn't count) and Zelda is the best girl, cause Peach's voice reaches a pitch reserved for dog whistles. But Sheik does give Marth problems in matches, doesn't she? Someone needs to write a fanfic, your right.

Math has difficulty with all of Links projectiles. True, Link may not be able to pull out a bomb in close quarters, that does not really matter. If your lucky you can get a boomerang out, but i'll admit even it might not have the speed required.

Marth only has difficulty with Link's projectiles when he's a respectable distance out.

His grab isn't that fast, and you're probably not going to get it out unless they screw up by like... dash attacking/fsmashing your shield or missing an L-cancel. And really the combo would be like... dthrow utilt dair... unless they don't know how to DI or something.

While Link's combos may not be lengthy, he generally does more damage per hit. You would of heard of Ken as you are a Marth player. While I will admit I am nowhere near as good as Aniki is, He is my proof that Link can keep up with Marth.

...uh...no. No, no he can't. Link's combos have nowhere near the damage or killing capacity that Marth's have. Yes, I've seen Ken against Aniki and yes, Aniki's an awesome player with awesome mindgames, but those matches were OLD. Ken today or another Marth like Mew2King would **** him into a smoldering pile of low tier nothing.

Erm.... what? Marth and Roy mixed together equals link? No.... not seein' it, sorry. Marth=win. Marth+Roy=awesomely win. Link's awesome, though; all of his moves look so cool. Used well, he's a very good character, but I think marth, Fox, etc. have more potential. Although, keep in mind this is coming from an extremely biased marth mainer. I did use Link when I first got melee though.....

my brother used to do that all the time since i used to always counter his attacks. he'd grab me, throw me up, and then spin attack. its a deadly combo if you dont react fast enough

Yeah, a lot of people spam just a few moves of Links. His up-b, of course, is perhaps the most spammed move ever. Dair, grabs, and a little of the usmash. It's too bad..... LoZ's a great game (I love Oracle of Seasons..... I'm wierd) and to see him abused brings a tear to my eye..... right after baiting him.

also, marth doesn't destroy link, marth just has a slight advantage. marth has combos, super speed, range, and homo-**** but link has decent (although not as broken) range, combos, juggles, a hookshot that punishes half-***** spacing on a lot of marth's stuff, and projectiles and a gay counterpick (rainbow cruise). they both kill each other pretty horribly off stage, although marth moreso than link but f-tilt and ledgehopped nair and nair and other random crap gives link some good edgeguards too so w/e. link's combos are pretty good on marth since marth has trouble getting down when he's above link, and marth's combos on link are also pretty good because marth combos tend to be good.

i don't think they're rivals, if there's some depictions of them fighting after you complete adventure mode or classic or whatever i'm sure it was just put there because it was a cool snapshot that would get the zelda fanboys hard.
