A few days ago I was thinking to myself, “What’s the point of all those trophies in Melee? If only there were some way to incorporate them into the gameplay.”
<!--more-->I figured, Sakurai didn’t need to make many more trophies. Melee contains a staggering 293 trophies. Each trophy is a detailed 3D model and is accompanied by descriptive and informative text.
A long time ago, I thought that smash could have made a trophy tussle stage featuring a random trophy to fight on each time. This was a bad idea. Proper level design is essential for smash to function. Fighting on the back of a random trophy can easily kill level design. Also, collision detection and edges to grab onto have to be added for each trophy individually. This is a lot of work that would ultimately be a waste of time.
But now we have Assist Trophies. In essence, this item is like a pokeball. You grab it, something randomly comes out, and it does something (probably dangerous). Sakurai informed us that Hammer Bro, Nintendog, and Samurai Goro are assist type characters.
“Basically, they’re guest characters separate from Smash’s playable roster! Super Smash Bros. Brawl is sort of like a festival that all sorts of characters show up for.”
A festival eh? Now we’re heading in the right direction. I believe this is the answer to our desire to fight with tons of various characters from various games. Smash is a fighter, and all playable character in the roster must have a basic moveset for A attacks, special moves for B attacks, and jumping ability. This is why a Tetris block would be a terrible character. Even if rotating along the stage was an attack, that’s just 1 out of 7 A attacks. It becomes too much of a stretch to make Tetris a character.

“Assist Trophies allow you to enjoy even more characters who couldn’t quite make it as playable fighters.”
Assist type characters come out, do their one task, and then they disappear (in theory). Like pokemon (Chansey, Cyndaquil) only some of the Assist characters will be vulnerable to attack. Though I haven’t played the game, this is the piece of news that disappoints me the most. Most of the Assist characters are invincible. Sakurai suggests running away. I would much prefer being able to take on the assist types as if they were characters. It may be risky, I may end up taking unnecessary damage, but at least I have the option. I think the assist types should be more like Goombas, Octorock, or Redead from Melee. They can attack and do damage to you, but you can still attack them. I love picking up a Redead and throwing them across the stage, or jumping on the heads of Goombas. For now, I’ll just have to trust Sakurai. After all, being able to attack assist types may not be appropriate in all cases. What happens when you attack a Tetris block? When you prick them, do they not bleed? I don’t think so. As long as everything is consistent, all will be well.

I hope Sakurai retains the Assist type characters style from their original games. I want to jump through a storm of hammers and land on a Hammer Bro’s head for a one hit kill. I want that Hammer Bro to then flip upside down and fall off the screen. If I get hit by a hammer, I want a classic Mario sound effect.
I wonder if there’s more to Assist Trophies that will further separate them from pokeballs.
“You may even see some that only the most dedicated fans will recognize, so you’ll have to look forward to them”
I’m calling it now. GRIT!!!!!!!!!!
