This isn't another "who should I second?" thread. I was looking at the brawl character matchup thread, and I was looking at who covered Marth's weaknesses the best, and the people Marth has a bad matchup against according to that were ROB, falco, and snake. I then looked to see who was neutral or had a good matchup against these 3 characters. I found TL, so here is the question, do you guys on the Marth board think that TL is a just a good secondary for Marth or is he the best? If yu don't think he is the best, then who do you think is? This can be helpful for Marth maining n00bs to find a second character, as it can be hard with Marth, since the people he is weak against are very good characters.

I'd suggest you second DK if you are wanting to cover Marth's weaknesses. He has some quick moves, similar range, he's heavy, counters MK, and kills easily.

The top tiers Junk mentioned are also good, especially MK if you want someone similar to Marth.

Toon Link isn't really a good secondary for Marth. Most of Toon Link's match-ups are even to Marth's, and the ones Marth has trouble with Toon Link has even MORE trouble with. The exceptions are Snake and ROB, but Marth can handle those two rather well regardless.

Also, Toon Link might have one of the worst disjoint hitboxes in the game. It's very small, and he needs some tech skill to work with.

He's fun to play though, but you gotta give it your all with him. He's light and small, and while he doesn't have a sweetspot, he is even more spacing-oriented as one bad moves can net the foe an easy kill.

TL;DR: Don't pick Toon Link unless you like working your *** off for every single match you fight with him. I'm quite sure he's going to be one of those few characters that can break your controller in Brawl (in Melee, about everyone would waste away GCN controllers, lol).

Ya guys, like I said, I don't need help finding a second, I'm doing that on my own, so don't act like thats what this thread is for. I'm just trying to help other Marth mainers find secondaries, not me, so don't aim your answers at me. And thanks for the posts...

You have MK which is a usual choice. You should try ICs. They can cover a lot when mastered. 1 grab could equal an instant spike at the edge, IC lock, or a high % beatdown. They are cheap in their own way (just like Marth) and are a threat overall. Thats My Opinion.

It is not about what character makes for the best secondary, but what character does best for YOU. For example, I may suck *** with DK but I play a **** good Jigglypuff. Therefore, Jiggs would be my best secondary. Sure you can add a strategic factor as to cover your own weaknesses with a character that does better in certain areas (i.e. long ranged fighting), but it won't do you any good if you're no good with the character.

It's all subjective.

I second Falco. He doesn't really help with the Meta problem, but I want to take them on with Marth anyway, seeing as I think that I won't become the best Marth player I can be without being able to fight MK.

I do play an abundance of characters though. I recently picked up G&W and this morning I messed around with IC for the first time. I'm trying to successfully be able to main the random button by the time the game is out for a year.

I am starting to develop secondaries, Olimar and Shiek (although I switch to Zelda for the kill).

Probably should/want change my sig.

Nah, the sig is fine. It's a mindgame to keep you're opp oblivious of the fact that you have secondaries
to kick them with.

Me, I found TL was a pretty good secondary. This coming from a guy who exclusively used Marth for like 3 months straight.

yeah, Tink is aight...except he kinda has a small blindspot in front of him with his aerials.

NEbody else notice this?
(blindspot = area where hitbox does not exist in a place where it would make sense)

His Nair has a very slender hitbox, and his Fair is too slow (only good for finishing/for a retreat), and his Zair too is slender, but it's one of the many weaknesses he had to have. To "balance" him. You know, in the same sense that MK is balanced. Dimensional ****.

It's not too much of an issue though. I do wish he had more range (considering his sword looks to be the same length as MK's), but that's like asking for MK to not be insanely outrageous.

Rob covers marths weaknesses? Awesome, I already secondary him :). I only use him when I have to play a Snake though so I guess thats what you meant =P

Ya, I actually have picked ROB... I made a list of like six people I might pick, played a couple matches with each one to see if I liked how they played, and narrowed it down to MK and ROB, but I use MK sometimes still just for some matches.

But keep this thread going to help out people other than me:)

I'd say G&W is a good secondary for marth. He's a good enough counter for MK and does decent against other characters as well. He's also really easy to learn which lets you spend more practice time with marth, who is far harder to learn.

That being said I've switched between a lot of secondaries. I started with D3, moved to Kirby, then G&W, then Jiggs and now I'm seconding ROB.

I don't think there is a best secondary for Marth, mainly because marth doesn't have any horrible matches imo. Maybe like 6/4 against snake but really marth is just harder to play. If you put the time in and really learn him well I don't think a secondary will do you much good, other than to just mix up your game. It seems like some matches are really hard for him, but you just need to realize that it takes a lot more concentration and effort to play marth well. Just play marth, he is far more rewarding than a secondary you use to go from a 6/4 match to a 5/5 match. I just use secondaries for fun because every time i feel like i've significantly improved my game against an MK or snake it feels REALLY good. It doesn't feel as good to just switch to G&W

DK would be an interesting secondary because I think the only two characters that have an obvious slight edge against Marth are MK/Snake, and DK appears to fare pretty well against them. Marth may possibly be even with everyone else except those two, although that's another issue.

Pick the character you're comfortable with, that you find plays well against the characters that give Marth trouble.

or...

You can play Marth against everyone, since 6/4 isn't that big of a deal.

I've used Marth for as long as I can remember.

In Melee, I mained Marth and secondaried Falco.

In Brawl, I started with Marth, second DeDeDe.

And then I saw a Sethlon video and promptly changed back to Falco. >.<

I feel like Falco is a good second because he offers range (which Marth does not) and a similar playstyle in some ways so it's not much of an adjustment. However, I'm still learning him.

Also, Falco chain throw --> spike = ROFL

I don't think MK has an advantage, its 5/5, imo. He's just really irritating. But then again, waveblade against MK is really good if you time/space it right and that can be really irritating for him because he will really mess up his spacing
