Ah! That’s great; there is hope!

i want that white shirt :0
it can be bought from here, but I don't know if they ship outside of Japan.

When my friend first sent me the link, I had actually thought it was for a mobile BOXBOY game, seeing as how Hal made Part-Time UFO. While I’m saddened to see it’s not, it’s great that he’s gotten a spin-off type game.

Would this mean Qbby has four games under his belt, or does he still have three?
you know, I could see BOXBOY going smartphone in the future (outside of Qbby's Part Time UFO cameo and this minigame) but part of me would prefer the series to stay on nintendo consoles.
as for the amount of games he's gotten... I think we'll go with 3.5 since I'm not sure if this mini-game should count or not.

in other news, I made a thing
Qbby Smash Bros Ultimate Trailer Mockup2.png

and also edited my costume image to make some Qbby stock icons (which i have posted in the stock icon thread)

Yeah, I think a lot more people would take Qbby seriously if his series were on handhelds.

Hey, uh, I think Qbby’s chances may have taken another blow.

According to an interview with Sakurai, the game’s roster was decided December 2015, a month before BOXBOXBOY was released, which had had the box-abilities.
While it’s very true that most of BBB may have been finished and debugging was all that’s left, it’s possible that Sakurai didn’t even consider Qbby due to a sequel not being released yet.

I have my fingers crossed, but I’ve gotten a bit worried.

Here’s the interview, by the way:

That’s rough, but it’s not the end. Qbby still had his double box abilities in the first BoxBoy, and Sakurai might have good enough contact with HAL that they might have floated him the idea.

I also believe that the three BoxBoy games were all developed at the same time, and just had a staggered release, but that’s unverifiable.

I checked; the producer of BOXBOY and its sequels has worked with Sakurai multiple times in the past. Plus, the producer of BOXBOY is the actual president of Hal Lab.

Yeah, I saw this the other day and my immediate thought was "how does this affect Qbby?"
and yeah, he may have taken a slight hit from this. by Dec15 BOXBOY! would have been out for quite a while and be reasonably popular and BOXBOXBOY would be about to release so Sakurai would have been able to see that Qbby isn't a one-off but with only 2 games it is a bit concerning.
If HAL knew they were going to do another one and spoke to Sakurai about it then it may have helped him a little still.
I'm still confident Qbby will get SOME recognition in this game but his chances of being playable are looking slimmer. but I won't give up hope!

Okay, so since the bye-bye abilities were teased at the end of BBB, it could mean a sequel was already being made.

And since the games heavily carry assets from each other, showing Sakurai his new box-abilities, if needed, may not have taken too much time. While his chances are definitely slimmer, maybe he still has a pretty good chance?

And looking at some of his main competition (since, I personally doubt we’ll get more than 2 eShop reps), Qbby seems to have a better chance.
Dillon only had two, mixed-review games when Ultimate’s roster was created.
Arcade Bunny is an assist trophy.
Tempo seems to only have one game.
And Mallo, while having more games and having been around for much longer, hasn’t gotten the recognition Qbby has. (That being a physical release, an amiibo, etc etc)

Count me as a supporter! I'd definitely love to see such an interesting and unconventional character become playable, whether it be as the "wtf" traditional character this time around, or just simply another addition.

Also, I would like to make a moveset for him! I'm not as familiar with his games as I am with other characters I've made movesets for, but I'd definitely like to give it a shot! Stylistically the moveset will look something like the one provided bellow, aka, mostly hand drawn.

Welcome aboard MrElectro!

That's a really cool Louie moveset. Hand-drawing it is a nice touch. can't wait to see what you can do for Qbby.

Thank you as well! I should have it done in the next few days, since time is a bit short for me at the moment, though I'm definitely going to push it to the front of the line, as I was planning on making movesets for Buzzwole and Tabuu from the SSE.

Okay, so I did some more digging, and according to this article:
https://nintendoeverything.com/boxb...d-games-features-amiibo-and-more-plus-switch/

When BBB was being developed, a third game was already confirmed and was being planned (maybe developmenr even started) before BBB even released.
I think this gives Qbby a bit more ground to walk on, and it partly confirms Grief’s theory of the BOXBOY games being made at the same time.

Nice find. it's interesting how many interviews and things there are around for the BOXBOY! series. since it sometimes seems like one of Nintendo's more obscure series.

so yeah, his chances aren't AS high as the likes of K. Rool or some of the other "sure thing big names" but Qbby still has a lot going for him and is still entirely possible

EDIT: also, a multiplayer BOXBOY! game on Switch like was mentioned in the interview would be AWESOME!

Mhm. If you look at it, reviewers and writers adored this game.
Kotaku and Gamespot both called it one of the best 3DS games of 2015, where it went up against Tri-Force Heroes, Monster Hunter 4, and Yo-Kai Watch.
IGN said it’s a must-have 3DS title, and was just very critically-acclaimed.

So, in that department, Qbby and friends did stellar.

"one of the best 3DS games of 2015" that is a fantastic thing to see. especially since the "project plan" for Smash Ultimate was decided on in December of 2015. with Qbby's 2nd game releasing a month later and the 3 already planned. Things actually are still looking kinda good for the little cube

EDIT: Apparently Qbby is being re-rated in the rate their chances thread today. everyone head on over there and show our favorite box some love!

Hey, so, I’ve beent thinking of a character from BOXBOY that could be an assist trophy. They aren’t anyone from the main trio, but they still have a big role in the games.

The Planetrons!
Each Planetron is able to give Qbby a specific ability, and I think they should do that here too. If you spawn in the green planetron, you get to do the knockback of two attacks at once. (So if Captain Falcon got it, then his falcon punch would do double the knockback, as would all his other moves.)

Red Planetrons make the user much floatier, and all moves used in the air have a fire enhancement.

The Yellow Planetron would give people 1.3x the knockback and a fire enhancement.

And the Blue Planetron would make the recovery of the user a very powerful teleport.

What do y’all think?

That’s a great idea! Hell, I could even see that as a map, where depending on where you’re fighting you get different properties. Assist Trophy looks better in my head, though.

That's a pretty neat idea Drawcia. it's definitely the most interesting choice for a BOXBOY! Assist Trophy

According to the Hal Website, today is BOXBOY! Day, Qbby’s 2.5 year anniversay!
https://www.hallab.co.jp/sp/company/blog/detail/003232/

I find it really interesting that Hal went out of their way to make an anniversary for BOXBOY! Shows they still love him!
Since it’s all in Japanese, I did my best to translate it into English with Google Translate:

“Hello everyone!
This is "Hako Boy!" Series director, Mukie.

I wrote a blog post on "Hakoboi! 2.5 anniversary" for the first time.
Those who knows are "Long time no see!", The first person is "Nice to meet you!"

Well, everyone, it is suddenly, but what did you know about August 5th ...?

Hack! Hakoboi! !
...so! On August 5th, we are "Hakoboi's Day"!

It is a proper anniversary which is also registered in the Japan Anniversary Association!
Last year, I also offered a ceremony ceremony for the anniversary registration card!

Yea ~ Last year, Hakoboi! As part of the 2.5 year anniversary project, I was talking to an assistant producer at the conference room, "I should make a day for Hakoboi!", I am fond of having taught it to commemorate the anniversary. (Far eyes

... And, how!

Continuing from last year, Mr. Cook Ohnishi who is a super programmer and professional-grade sweet creator made a surprise cake this time for this day too!
No way he will make me this year! I am very happy!

The high quality as ever! And, above all, super delicious!

I got a comment on this work from such a **** oonishi so I will post it.

[cake here]

Thank you very much for your introduction! It is cook.
It is a memorable day of "Hakoboi!" So I made it this year too!

It is named "Delicious loop stage with no ocean and mango".

While making a simple stage on the side of the cake, I put the usual members on the top.
Cucis' ribbon is a charm point, which claims to protrude lightly over the boundary of the world "the foundation of a cake".

In order to bring out the unique view of the world of "Hakoboi!", Decoration is based on two-dimensional ones, and it makes a configuration of the cake pleasant.

The main cake body is a three-layer structure of plain sponge, plenty of pears and mango are used for filling. Another thing is cherries with accent. It is a simple cake made with fine texture.

Thanks to you, we were pleased by the development team this time.
I hope that you will continue to cook Ohnishi!

[more cake]

That's it, it was a comment from Mr. Koku Ohnishi! Thank you very much.

"Hakoboi!" Has entered the fourth year since this first release in January 2015!
In order to become a long-loved content, I am willing to embrace Pink's big seniors and try hard.

Please continue your favors toward the "Hakoboi!" Series!
Let 's meet on another occasion! That's it ~.”

Now, the reason I send this is because of some of those last couple sentences.
Due to the ‘capabilities’ of Google Translate, some things are clearly lost in translation. But, you can see that Mukae talks a bit about BOXBOY being ‘a long-loved content’, which I think he just means an iconic and loves franchise.
Then he says that he will continue to work hard with “Pink’s Seniors” in order to get BOXBOY to the level he’d like.

I may be completely wrong, but I think that by Pink’s Seniors, he may mean Kirby’s Seniors, being Sakurai.

It may be weird to think that he may hint at BOXBOY representation in Smash, but this article was only posted on the Japanese Website,

While I’m probably completely wrong, I thought some of y’all should also take a look to see if you could correct me or build off my theory.

Well guys and girls, we've made it this far without a deconfirmaion.
we can't give up hope yet.
The Smash Bros Direct is in a few hours. it's possible Qbby may get revealed in it.
and it's possible he won't be.
let's hope for the best and pray that he doesn't get revealed to be relegated to Assist Trophy

Well this proves they still have a lot of love for their series and want to do more with it at least. don't know if it points to Qbby in smash, but it at least shows that he has a future.

“Pink’s Seniors”
now can't help but imagine an elderly Kirby.

unless I missed something. nothing from Boxboy! showed up in the direct.
guess that's both a good and a bad thing.
Good because it means they might be waiting to reveal Qbby as a newcomer.
bad because it means they might ignore Boxboy! entirely...

Well, I think Qbby does have a good chance.
A lot of requested characters were deconfirmed, so maybe?

There’s always DLC if he isn’t in the base roster

At the beginning of the direct, when the Smash logo on white showed, my phone glitched out and it looked like a Qbby announcement. I was happy.

If custom moves come back, maybe that could be a way to alter how many boxes long some of Qbby's attacks can get.

more boxes, stronger, slower
normal
less boxes, quicker, weaker, less knockback

QBBY is my most wanted, he will be interesting with edge guarding. He will literally push people off the edge, but create platforms.
