I focus too much on flashy combos.
Therefore I've concluded this community focuses too much on flashy combos. The cause of this obsession, the mother of all aevils? Combo videos - with combos.
(My lofic is infallible)

What do you think of an idea of a combo video where there were no combos? Just really neat spacing, amazing reads and superb mindgames? I realize most combo videos have these anyway, but the focus is on the actual combos, not the situation or read which lead to the combo, therefore everything else tends to get overshadowed by the...combos.
But in this type of video the combos or 0-deaths wouldn't matter.

Oh and one last thing, for god's sake no techo/heavy trance music plz

E:

Eh the video section...yeah

You made those first two sentences sound like just because you focus on doing flashy combos the whole community focuses on doing it. Might wanna correct that, but I know what you mean. Anyways......for music imo I'll use hip hop (the good kind, underground specifically); it goes surprisingly well with Melee.

The problem is that the average player wouldn't understand/appreciate what top players would call an amazing read.

and I fear that this video is just gonna be player A doing something really stupid and player B happened to look for it

Your right, the thing is tech skill attracts the average player and sometimes won't even. Ignorant players will probably see an amazing read as oh... he just tricked him. Yea he did tricked him, and was able to do it because knows the MU, the players weaknesses/disadvantages, and saw the players patterns throughout match. With all that he took the player flaws and punished him. This game is like Chess, its all about reading your opponent.

Knowing is half the battle

Your second clip should be Lovage's nair-shine shield pressure to hard read usmash vs. Tope at Northwest Manifest.

The people saying a vid like this wouldn't attract newer players is being extremely condescending imo. Even new players are able to recognize and appreciate smart reads when they see them.

Neat Spacing, amazing reads, and superb mindgames are usually IN a combo or RESULT in a combo, so its pretty similar. Just have combos that end in amazing reads, or something like that. but most amazing combos, people read other's DI (or react), and space properly.

Hitting a cornered or shielding opponent should really just be expected since they have .4 options. That's the whole point.

i feel like this video would be too hard to make just because it'll be really hard to decide what should and what should not be allowed in the video

if you wanted to see guesswork in action, you could attempt to dictate coin flips.

i don't see why you would want to make yet another captain falcon combo video, the character really isn't that interesting.

nothing. i rather like some of your ideas. this one is just begging for intellectual degeneracy though, there's no way you can't foresee it.

A lot of good reads have a long process of conditioning or staggering the opponent attached because that's just the nature of behaviour manipulation / prediction. Not sure how you'd capture this in a combo video because a lot of it occurs throughout the match (especially with conditioning). A 2 second clip can't convey this IMO and transplanting the read out of its context often makes it look like a lucky guess, which isn't impressive at all.

Interesting idea but obvious barriers exist. They can probably be worked around but I don't think the end product will look like a conventional highlight or combo video.

Wait > tipper on a sidestep doesn't even look like a read anymore. It just looks like a good reaction to a defensive commitment (probably on a staggered foe).

Lovage's pressure > charge u-smash thing is probably one of the best things you'll find that conveniently falls into the 2 second clip with visible reading and conditioning. In fact, this video will likely be just spacies (and Falcon, Marth, Puff [Mango], and Sheik) pressuring and then calling a defense option and hard covering it with something. Might be okay, but I wouldn't make the video longer than 3-4 mins if that's what it winds up being.

Mango's super ridiculous rests on Armada a la Genesis 1 should be in here (if nobody's mentioned them yet). His Puff dittos vs HBox from that also had some pretty swag moments (who jab cancels with Puff?) that might warrant a glance.

I thought of three particular moments while reading through this thread:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t6I6OkhiQII at 3:35

Mango's rest on Armada at Genesis 1

And the third one is Peepee sh-ing twice or thrice under a platform, with Armada shielding on it, and shieldstabbing him with a bair after the shield shrank a little bit (I don't remember the set for this one though, and I don't feel like rewatching all of their matches right now).

I think such a video could be very interesting, and could make some subtle reads appear more clearly to people like me with liittle to no knowledge of the mental aspect of the game.
