For starters its easy, tie it to your account. If you have unlocked all the characters on your account, it will remember it and unlock them all for where ever you play.

Customizable clothing would be great.
Do you mean color editing? Like in Kings of Fighters? If so I think if they dont have Alts in this game that they atleast need to let you do color edits. Id like to make the black and white Yoshi.

^ He means like editing the actual outfits of the characters with accessories or replacing the outfits themselves with a new one for the characters

Like, customizing Marth to have a DK tie or something

I got some Alt. Costume ideas.

Mewtwo: Mecha-Two (Obviously. If Mewtwo is in SSB4, and SSB4 has Alt. Costumes, this is a must!)

Lucario: Rildy-Costume (Rildy from Pokemon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum)

Pikachu: Jester Outfit (From Lucario and the Mystery of Mew. Just for kicks ;))

Toon Link: Outset Clothing (From Wind Waker)

ZSamus: Normal Clothing (From Metroid: Other M.)

Ridley: Meta Ridley (From... Idk :I)

Keldeo: Resolute Form (From Pokemon Black2 White2

Luigi: Mr. L. (From Paper Mario)

Bowser: Dry Bowser (From Super Mario Land 3DS)

Sonic: Sonic Riders outfit (From Sonic Riders)

Donkey Kong: Boxer Donkey Kong (From Punch Out!! Wii. The tye he wears would have Little Mac's symbol, whatever it would be.)

Wario already started the trend in Brawl, and it's fairly common in fighting games, so here are my picks for alternate costumes:

I stuck in Ridley and K. Rool because I want them in and they have obvious alts. I figured the Zelda characters will change to their Skyward Sword designs, so their Twilight Princess outfits are their alts, except for Ganondorf, who wasn't in Skyward Sword. The characters absent are the ones I couldn't think of anything for.

i love the idea of unlockable alternate looks for everyone, but i have two suggestions on how it would be best implemented:

1) the alternate costume can't require a name change. bringing back young link and giving him toon link as his alternate is one thing, because toon link could conceivably still be called "young link". same goes for mario to dr. mario - it's still mario. however, having rosalina as peach's alternate wouldn't work because peach =/= rosalina. (this one i'm less invested in because there's already precedent with peach ==> daisy)

2) there ought to be a major visual change between costumes. @dlbpc: your example of link changing to his twilight princess look doesn't work for me because aside from the brighter coloring it looks really similar. but the examples you gave for ike and ridley are good because they look different enough for the unlockable costume to be deemed special.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
now for my suggestions:
1) while i'm normally not crazy about the pokemon anime's influence on smash bros content, mewtwo's armor fromthe beginning of the first movie could be cool. my personal pick, though, would be his traveling cloak from the end of Mewtwo Returns. that would be boss.

2) sonic (if he comes back) could get classic sonic as his altenate. depending on how far they want to take the idea, they could even cut out his voice and change his sound effects.

3) this one could be too much of a stretch, but what if they gave the ice climbers a pixelated sprite form, complete with a game-and-watch style flat effect?

4) a cool personal idea for ROB: give him a sleek, streamlined look, as if he were a wii-U peripheral. you know, modernize him. put ROB 2.0 on his base or something.

The problem with that is that classic Sonic is shorter and a bit more rotund than modern Sonic, so they'd have to change his hitbox, which is a big no-no with alt costumes.

sure, yeah. that's fair. that's another point i should've addressed: visuals are the only thing that should change.
Ya I think some are over thinking the idea of the alternate costume. It should only be appearence. No size, voice, or even slightly changed movesets. How many other games do that with their alternate cosumtes? To my knowledge none so I wouldnt see why Smash would.

I'm fine with whatever changes come with the costume as long as they're purely cosmetic. Dr. Mario can throw pills instead of fireballs if they act identically to fireballs.

I vote Golden Mario as a color swap with gold fireballs rather than an actual alternate. Since I see an alternate being more of a dramatic change in appearence like the Delfino vacation look or the Dr. Mario costume.

Something to keep in mind about solid metalic alts (Ie, gold/silver Mario) is that there won't be much visual difference from the char to a metal box transformation. Seeing how Sakurai loves his items that's something I felt some of you should consider.

At any rate, interesting alts which are relevant are always good.

Good points but gold mario and silver luigi both seem to have a sparkle effect as well as show alot more physical features than the metal suit

I'm guessing it will work like this:
Alt. palette colors: avaiable since the beginning.
Alt. costumes: to unlock.

Alternate costumes should be paid DLC. It should also be ON the game disc, but you have to buy them to unlock them

Personally, I do not want DLC contents on the game disc. Instead, the game disc could contain a feature which reads the contents of the Wii U hard drive and/or the SD card. If any add-on contents are detected, the disc will load the data from its location, temporarily implementing it into the game.

Think of it as how Mario Kart 7 utilizes its update; without an SD card, you can't use the update, and won't have access to the Nintendo Network.

Edit: Stickied for easier access.

I thought Sakurai was working on SSB4, not Capcom.
Haha....Maybe he's just an undercover Capcom employee.

I think all fighting games should learn from how character on the disc DLC backfired in Capcom's face when Street Fighter X Tekken came out. Fans were not happy! Capcom's a rip off. Having their costumes being paid DLC. Theres no reason why there shouldnt be UNLOCKABLE costumes in Smash 4. This game needs a lil more unlockable content this time around. Since it is a sequel on a much higher scale.

Barring Capcomgate, on disc DLC makes sense from a technical end. Without it being put on the disc, those that haven't bought the DLC can't see it which can result in compatibility issues. Not only that, but it makes downloading easier and cheaper.

And Capcom choosing to make their costumes as DLC is completely legitimate. You may not like it, but it's how they operate things and we're stuck with it really.

I would like to note that alternate costumes could cure the "Light" version of the same character in team matches. It works with Wario already.

I'm all for it!

i think they should let you put custom colors on whoever you use, then let you save it and use it in matches that'd be awesome.

Blood falcon was an alternate for the Capt. in both 64 and Melee, even Brawl. Why not have Black Shadow? I like the idea of alternative costumes, very much. Best chance I have of seeing Boshi.

Retro Costumes

Sorry if this is in the wrong place I wasn't sure if this kind of thread goes in the character discussion or general.

Anyways, I had this idea for alternate costumes, have the costumes from past games. I know characters like Kirby wouldn't look much different, but think about Link. Each game he has been different but the same.

The only problem is it would be a lot of work and Sakurai would have to add Link's arrow, Mario's cape, Jiggly's ball, etc. And add the two more taunts.

What do you guys think?

It would certainly be interesting. DK's 64 model looks like a total mess. lol

Because Black Shadow is popular and important enough to be his own character.

Just makes me wonder, if Black Shadow does manage to make it he will take over Ganondorf's old moveset and Ganon will finally use his sword.
I hope not. While I was in the camp that supported that a while ago, I've changed my mind after doing more research on the character.

But this isn't the thread for that.
