Are you allowed to pick just Squirtle, Ivysaur, or Charizard for a tourney match? Like, if the opponent killed your choice of Pokemon, they'd have to wait for you to switch back to that Pokemon before resuming the battle?

Example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYnuA38leV4 (Santi dies at 1:12 and 2:22; watch for those times)

If there's no rule about this, whoever's in charge of making rulesets should consider adding a rule for this, as there are a lot of people who'd use PT(myself included) if they had the option to use just one Pokemon for a match.

Gah, I had a feeling this thread was made already. Should've searched first...

Anyway, has the BBR made any input on this matter?

I understand this, but a rule like this wouldn't be all that hard to implement. There's nothing problematic with ceasing the battle for five seconds so a player can press DownB twice after dying.

And aside from that, it adds to the number of playable characters to use; from PT to PT, Squirtle, Ivysaur, and Charizard. Using PT as a whole is completely different from using one Pokemon exclusively, and some players might be better off that way in certain MUs.

We're playing Brawl, and in Brawl there's no such character as Squirtle, Ivysaur, or Charizard. That's what it comes down to... we could do it, and it would have some positive points, but we don't because it's essentially changing the game.

In any case, there would be problems with that implementation. It would be advantageous for me to delay switching for as long as possible, so that my primary pokemon restores its fatigue. How long can I delay it for before it's against the rules? What if we're on a stage like Norfair and a hazard is coming? Am I forced to switch immediately, even if it means I'll get hit by a hazard?

Well, I was thinking you would have five seconds to switch out, otherwise the opponent could just beat up on you after that, and you wouldn't be allowed to retaliate until you switched back to your correct Pokemon. That in itself sounds a bit complicated even to me, so I can understand the skepticism about this rule. Maybe if there was some definitive way to enforce this rule without any chance of funny business, then it could hold some ground?

And as far as stage hazards, Norfair's lava is the only thing that could potentially hit you midswitch(on all other stages, you either get enough notice, or can avoid completely even without notice), and Norfair lava only deals like 10 damage anyway.

That's a REALLY good example, but under my(or the current) ruleset, that would be more analogous to someone using PT(rather than one specific Pokemon) saying, "Okay, I died; lemme switch out again without you hitting me."

Alright, I'm givin' this one bump with my proposed rule. It's a bit long, and needs trimming, but I just wanna get the idea out there. For the record, picking Pokemon Trainer and picking a specific Pokemon, say, Charizard, does not constitute as selecting Charizard as a character. You still have to specify to your opponent whether or not you're using Charizard or Pokemon Trainer with Charizard as the lead off.

The PT Single Finish rule- Squirtle, Ivysaur, and Charizard will be added as usable characters, in addition to Pokemon Trainer. If you select Squirtle, Ivysaur, or Charizard as a character, you may only fight with that Pokemon.

If you are switched to another Pokemon via stock loss, you have a total of seven seconds after you've exited the respawn platform to switch back to your designated Pokemon. The opponent may begin to attack after the seven seconds are up, or after your selected Pokemon has completed its "exit Pokeball" animation. If you accidentally switch to another Pokemon midmatch, the opponent may freely attack you. If you land any attack on your opponent with a Pokemon that is not your designated Pokemon(recoveries excluded), the match will end in your opponent's win.

John12346, I've actually played you before and you seem to be a smart player, I honestly can't believe someone like you would make this thread. Even though I myself personally would love this rule (due to wanting to have mained solo Squirtle when I first heard PT/Squirtle was in Brawl), its stupid and with Brawl being as campy as it is with every second counting in those matches that run the timer or goto the very last seconds it ruins the pace of the game. It would also COMPLETELY put a teams match out of pace too.

Alright alright, fine, someone get a lock and key on this.

And Jonas, I knew what I was talking about. I've been to plenty of tournaments and I also seriously thought this rule had SOME viability for whatever reason popped into my head. I just thought wrong, is all. My bad. >.>;

Edit: But seriously, someone get this thread closed.

If you really like playing as solo Charizard, I suggest you look into playing Brawl+, which has an option to play every Pokemon independently.
