Great post, i was just wondering about the venue issue since every tournament i have done in my city it´s been a headache, i´ve had to pay for the venue a couple of times, wasn´t so much but it was equal to 4 fees :S.
I´ve seen that most of US tourneys are done in universities, i tried once to ask for a space in my university but yeah....i made the mistake of the videogame stuff and not been taken seriously (games are even sillier in my country), also they didn´t like the fact that´s a profit event, so what can i do about it?

PD:also there is no such thing as arcade store or arcade games place in my city XD

What do you guys feel like the minimum number of setups is to run a 32 man tournament smoothly? Obviously more is better, but it's always good to have that minimum threshold.

I think a good TV to person ratio is 1 TV for every 8 players. That means for 32 players you will want 4 TVs. To help the event run faster you may want to go for 1 TV for every 4 people, which means you will want 8. I have run tournaments where I have had nearly 10 setups for a little less than 30 people. The event ran incredibly quickly and people got to play friendlies, but many stations were left untouched. I think going too far over the 1 to 4 ratio leads to inefficiencies.

This is crazy helpful. I have been working on building up a Smash community in my area and it is starting to take hold. A friend decided he wanted to run a tourney so this will be wicked helpful.
Kinda had two questions. 1. With a small group how important do you think a prize pool is. We are hoping for 16-24 players if we get this thing up and going so I feel like I would not want charge much more than the venue charge.
2. We don't play a lot of doubles, but why is team attack on the standard for doubles? We are not against it but I was wondering if there is a reasoning behind it.

Hi there, successful TO out of Shelton, CT who is about to run his EIGHTH tournament, first time in an actual venue, this was a great read! I feel silly for not ever thinking of putting a meal break in... now it just seems obvious. Great read!

I don't know how to answer your first question but the consensus about team attack is that it warrants more skill to be able to attack and not hurt your own teammate in the process, plus it allows you to save your partner in specific instances.

I'm trying to host a Melee tournament and I only have flat screen tv's. Is that going to be okay or do I have to get tube tv's?

Many players won't enjoy the idea of playing on the flat screens. As a community CRTs are a standard, and if your tourny is going to be legit in any sense of the word you should go about getting some.

Advertise to anyone coming that you require some CRTS to be brought to the event, and look for places that sell CRTs cheap and snag them

This guide is excellent and overall professional. Thanks for the useful advice and a nice and clean way to keep everything organized, recently I started a smash crew since I couldn't find anybody competitive. This will help for future events, I recommend.
