It's not about having characters "get" stages. Japes and Green Greens are just stupid stages, and Mute, Brinstar, and DK64 aren't (DK64 isn't even close, you probably don't know the secret Fox camp technique there). I've made about 23987 posts explaining why I don't feel like doing it again.
