1st official japanese tier list

I always prefer characfers if I've played their games before. So I enjoy playing as most of the roster. My absolute FAVORITES are few.

Maybe it would be a good idea for a MOD to create a sticky thread dedicated to the posting and discussing of these early tiers..... So rather than new tier threads constantly being created, one large yet organized thread can be used for those purposes. Just a thought

Overly gimmicky characters never do too well and Shulk is the personification of gimmicky. Full character though. It is really too early to make a full opinion of this tier list. People always make early assumptions on characters from the start and it isn't until months or even a year later until we get a fuller image of the characters. However, Zero Suit Samus, Greninja, Bowser, and Lucario is all pretty beastly in the game. Still, it is best to take this tier list with a bit of skepticism since early lists aren't exactly 100% accurate. As well, and tier lists differ between regions. Just take a look at these Brawl tier lists:

They do have similarities but a lot of differences as well. Give the meta game some time before making baseless judgements on the roster.

This. Watching Brawl develop over the course of six years, I know that this is basically just a first impressions tier list. Characters like Sheik and Greninja are unmistakably good while characters like Duck Hunt Duo and Rosalina have a lot of potential. Other characters, like Shulk and Ike, do seem very underwhelming right now but, like I mentioned in another thread, so did Olimar and the Ice Climbers when Brawl first came out. I also get the feeling that some characters are going to take a tumble once people figure out how to fight them. For example, ROB, Dedede, and Game and Watch started off as some of the best characters in Brawl only for people to figure out their basic strategies and knock them down a peg. I get the feeling that Bowser will be among one of these characters that people will come to figure out once more people are actually playing this game and fighting in high end tournaments.

This is ridiculous. It's way too early to tell. And it doesn't really add up to the gameplay I've seen. We'll still be learning techniques and styles at least 6 months into the game.

Still... it's good to see it shuffled round a bit. I want my Jiggs back on top! And Bowser Jr. I'll play him (or Roy) until I'm amazing.

It's interesting that you bring up Bowser, because I feel the same. Bowser is no slouch, he did receive buffs and will be better off, BUT I think the key for Bowser will be people knowing which of his skills give him super-armour (word has it he has a respectable amount of it) and which don't, and when it's better to get the hell away from him vs try and intercept / out-prioritise him. Naturally, given the game's small lifespan, people probably don't know this information yet, so Bowser will wreck the majority of people in the early days.

Ike was exactly the same. Yeah, he's a noob-friendly character, but once you really learn about super-armor and timing, he can be devastating.

If this was to be true later on, I would've totally called it. I like Samus and everything, but I know she's still gonna be low ever since the E3 event said she was "strongest." Unless something big happens to her, that placement might not change as much.

I'm glad to see that my mains Lucario, Yoshi, Bowser and Sonic seem top notch material atm but I hope this doesn't become a similar case like Brawl where bottom tier characters like Ganon would almost always lose against characters like Falco or Meta Knight even if both players skill were the same.
I know that achieving perfect balance is a daunting task but I don't any character in my Smash to be completely useless or overpowered against others. We'll just wait until the meta game develops a little bit more; also, if it's necessary, I hope Nintendo supports the game post-release with a slew of patches to adjust balance like Capcom did with SSFIV, I've heard that that game has very good balance. If I had it my way, I would patch Megaman's Down B and make it useful.

Nah man I'm on Team Ness and I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing to have a "tier list" like this (using apostrophes because as someone mentioned earlier, it's better to think of this as an "Opinion List That is Highly Likely to be Changed".)

After watching shofu occasionally destroy with Ike over the past few weeks, i find it hard to believe that he's bottom tier, I wouldn't put him top or high tier, but mid-low.
but this is an early tier list from one countries player base and it will develop once the rest of the world is playing

Pretty sure it's first impressions of multiple people, at least according to a guy earlier on who said that it was based on 'average judge scores'. Then again, though, my Japanese is bullcrap, so if you can point to a specific quotation that specifies this was based on a single opinion, that would be great. Not doubting you, just find it weird that a gaming community's early Speculation list is based entirely on the opinion of a single person.

Although I still completely agree that jumping to conclusions based on a language you can't understand is something people shouldn't do. And of course, that it's not representative of an entire region's opinions (then again, since when has any tier list ever completely represented everyone's opinions?)

Considering the amount of likes the post got, people probably thought I was being sarcastic, but I genuinely don't know what makes an official Japanese tier list. Like, I know for the West, but not for Japan.

Let me be frank: This list sad. So sad it's almost laughable - a monument to ignorance and presumption - amusing actually - especially the "official" part. It's not the opinion part that is bad - it's the presumption that enough is known about the game at this point to make any sort of intelligent tier list that actually helps develop the meta-game. The community needs to consider the projects it pursues and how they actually help the growth and development of the game, versus spreading misinformation and ignorance. Knowledge is power. Passing off something like this as "official" can only be damaging, as it is willingly spreading uninformed opinions as empirical information. It is completely undeserving of this type of credence. Sad, sad, sad.

LOOL so true. im stuck in the middle cuz greninja on the high end while bowser jr is in the middle.

tbh this list WILL change (or at the least bit North Americans will develop our own), so i say dont stress it.
