Nintendo Wii's Virtual Console has been out for over a year now, and has caught the attention of the media all over the world. Downloading old games for a minimal prize to play in their original version, without having to use the old system it was designed for? Can't get much better than that. Well Nintendo is reaching for that goal, and is currently doing an alright job. It has room for improvement, but it's a very good start nonetheless.

This thread will introduce you to these games, the ones you have played in your past and the ones you have missed out. The amazing ones and the not-so-amazing ones. I'll help inform you on the titles to hit and miss, and the latest Virtual Console news. Expect updates for all regions that I can get info on (Yes, this includes PAL).

If you have any questions, please ask me through PM, I can't guarantee you I'll notice your posts in this thread.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Virtual Console News -
This will include mostly Virtual Console news, but it may also include WiiWare as they both share the same idea.

SEGA MasterSystem and GameGear Coming January 25, 2008 - You heard right. We are finally getting new systems to appear on the Virtual Console. The SEGA MasterSystem and SEGA GameGear will be appearing on the NTSC Virtual Console coming the next few months (Not sure about the PAL). The Master System is just anothing SEGA console, but the Game Gear was SEGA's version of the GameBoy. I don't know much about these consoles, but I want to try the Sonic games for the Game Gear. Are they any good?

The first few games to come out have been announced as Fist of the North Star (600 Wii Points) and Fantasy Zone (500 Wii Points), but this is in Japan. These games will probably come out in the NTSC regions and PAL, but SEGA themselves said that all titles will sell for 500 Wii Points. We'll see what's up with that soon enough.

Brawl Featuring "Masterpieces" January 25, 2008 - Brand new to the Wii, and to Smash Bros., Super Smash Bros. Brawl will feature a thing called "masterpieces." What these will be is playable demos of games available on the Virtual Console. These will only last for a few minutes, basically acting as teasers to make you want to download the full version of the game on the Wii Shop Channel. The confirmed "masterpieces" are the following: Super Mario Bros., Ice Climber, Legend of Zelda, Kid Icarus, Kirby's Adventure, Super Metroid, and Star Fox 64. You may unlock different demos, but which ones and how is unknown.

Also, Japan not only got those, but also Mother 2 and Fire Emblem. What does this mean for the rest of us? Well, nothing. But it does give us a glimmer of hope for games like Mother 2 or Fire Emblem to make their English debut.

Duck Hunt... Fake? January 14, 2008 - Kotaku gives their idea on the Dunk Hunt fiasco. They bring up some good points, as I personally didn't know that the Shooting Range on Wii Play was supposed to be Duck Hunt, but meh. This doesn't disprove it, but still don't keep your hopes up.

Duck Hunt WiiWare? (January 14, 2008) - Truly not something I take into interest, but for you guys maybe so. Someone at Hudsonsoft stated they found a disc in their office, and on it was a Wii Game called "NEW! Duck Hunt." None of this really makes sense, as in why would a WiiWare game be on a disc; why would it be in Hudsonsoft's office in the first place?

I wouldn't believe this for a second, but in the link I gave you (in the title of this article), there is actually a video of someone playing it. It really looks like too much trouble to be a hoax, but you never know these days. Though, if it is real, I think that while the sounds are nostalgic, I don't like them. Seems like it was ripped strait from the original Duck Hunt, but whatever. What do you think?

Golden Eye Not Virtual Console Bound? (January 7, 2008) - Recently a site called XBox Evolved made an article saying that Golden Eye (a popular Nintendo 64 title) was heading to the XBox Live Arcade later this year. For those of you uniformed, XBox Live Arcade is Microsoft's version of the Virtual Console, but usually changing the games to play online. It later mentioned that they will be getting Banjo-Kazooie and Perfect Dark as well.

All three of these where immensely popular titles back in the day, and most anticipated titles for the Virtual Console now. But with this, is it possible that Nintendo will have no rights to these titles, or will it appear on both? (XBox Live Arcade has some of the same titles as on the Virtual Console, such as Sonic the Hedgehog.) This is still up in the air at this point.
New Info! Greeneggsnsam made a post saying that Nintendo and Microsoft could not agree on the subject, so it is not coming out on the XBox Live Arcade. Does this mean it will come out on the Virtual Console? That's foolishness if you take that as a confirmation, but it definitely is good news for the fans of these games.

Virtual Console Reviews -
I, Sariku, also review some of the Virtual Console games. Now, I don't do them all, I don't have that kind of money. What I do is choose the ones people will most likely be tempted to buy, good or bad, and give my opinion on them. I do accept gifts, but I am looking into just writing reviews for the games I own on other consoles, thanks for the idea from the other members who suggested that.

Nintendo Entertainment System -
~ Kirby's Adventure - Nintendo Entertainment System (500 Wii Points) (January 14, 2008)
Super Nintendo -
I currently own no games to review.

Nintendo 64 -
~ Star Fox 64 -Nintendo 64 (1000 Wii Points) (January 16, 2008)
~ Yoshi's Story - Nintendo 64 (1000 Wii Points) (January 19, 2008)
~ Mario Kart 64 - Nintendo 64 (1000 Wii Points) (February 9, 2008)
-----Video Review

Sega Genesis/Megadrive -
~ Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic 2, and Sonic 3 - Sega Genesis (800 Wii Points)

TurboGrafx-16 -
I currently own no games to review.

Neo Geo -
I currently own no games to review.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I may add more to this, but I am probably not going to give a list of all releases. The reason is that it would be long and tedious, and stretch this post to unneeded lengths. I may make a list of upcoming titles though, just give me feedback on this thread. Thanks guys.

Sariku, I see you have no SNES games.
Might i recommend Kirby Superstar? It has infinite playability and is widely regarded as Kirby's finest moment in gaming.

Aaryk I went ahead and checked. It isn't out just yet. You gave me a bright light in my life only to cruelly snatch it away!

Actually, inability to reach an agreement about Goldeneye has currently killed it's chances to appear on either system- Nintendo owns the publishing rights still, but Rare (and by proxy, Microsoft) owns the rights to the game itself. Which basically means Nintendo dictates where it can go, but only with Rare's permission to use it first.

(Supposedly, the story goes that Microsoft/Rare were willing to let Nintendo release a VC version if it meant they'd be allowed to put out the XBLA version they really wanted to do- which was little more then Goldeneye with cleaned-up graphics, fixed framerate, and online play- but Nintendo was unwilling to let the game appear anywhere other then Virtual Console. Since Rare/Microsoft were only willing to let Nintendo put out a VC version to get permission to put out the version they really want on XBLA, it's pretty much a stalemate at this point.)

Edit: This disagreement will likely also prevent Rare's other titles from hitting VC- including the Wizards and Warriors :( and Battletoads series :( :(. I don't know if this will also stop Banjo-Kazooie and Perfect Dark from hitting XBLA, since Nintendo may or may not hold the publishing rights for those titles too.

Game Gear Sonic titles are generally rubbish- the second one's the only good one of the lot. I'd be more excited about it if most good Game Gear titles weren't inferior versions of games found on the Genesis or NES- even the good titles, like the Game Gear Castle of Illusion, I'd rather see the better home version of first. The Master System compatibility adds a few interesting options, though.

I can understand Nintendo not wanting to let Goldeneye get released on XBLA. They essentially paid for the game's creation and an XBLA release would probably help Xbox more than Wii.

As for Rare's other games... Rare owns the rights to any franchise they created, you'd assume that they would own the publishing rights as well to say Banjo and Perfect Dark, but who knows. I don't think the details of Rare's sale to MS were ever publically disclosed.

Even so, if the Banjo games got re-released they'd have to clean up Banjo-Tooie... as Tip-tup appears in that game. Tiptup originally appeared in Diddy Kong Racing, since that was techncially a DK franchise game, the character is owned by Nintendo.

Also (different note) don't expect Kirby Super Star anytime soon on VC. Supposedly the new "Kirby Super Ultra Deluxe" on DS is a remake. If that's true, they probably won't release KSS on VC since it might hurt sales.

Didn't like Harvest? I guess its not for everyone. The original is the only version of that game that hooked me though.

But yeah, S&P is great. The controls were kind of a learning curve, but it rocked once you got the hang of it.

I need to play it because I was just a baby when it came out. For SNES games, I recommend Super Mario Worl or Super Metroid.

YES! Kirby 64 coming out tomorrow!

Also, what's everyone's favorite VC fighter, I'm torn between KoF '94, SSF2, and SF2 turbo.

You know, it's odd. Today I bought my first two VC games (Sonic 2 and Super Mario World) and my TV gives me a message saying it doesn't support them. I am currently using Component cables for my Wii, so I switch to my old AV cables and the games work.

In short: Don't buy VC games for now if you use component cables.

Is Kirby 64 good? Should I download it.?
Um, it's high quality, but widely regarded as the lowest point of Kirby ever seen. Most Kirby games before then were really high quality, as mentioned with Kirby's Super Star.

But don't get me wrong, it's a really good Kirby game, it's just short, and lacks where the other previous games have given. I would get it if you love platformers that are querky and fun, or just plain love Kirby games, like any of the recent releases.

Kirby 64 and Crystal Shards are the same game. But yeah, it should be out soon, actually, it should be out now.
Seriously? Wow, I always thought there were two, but I had only played one.

Well, just goes to show that you can't trust your gaming experience as a kid. :p

It's probably the worst Kirby game ever released, but it's still a pretty good game. Worth a play if you haven't played it before, worth a replay if it's been a long time and you're biding your time until they finally give in and put Super Star out SOMEWHERE (or, heaven forbid, a new console Kirby)

That said, if you're looking for something that plays like the other Kirby games, wait for Dream Land 3, which is basically in the queue. K64 is much slower, somewhat easier, and noticeably more puzzle-oriented then most Kirby games. (Puzzles which, for the most part, they throw the answers at you, too... kinda defeating the whole 'puzzle' thing)

Summarize Sin and Punishment.
It's an Starfox 64-esque onrail 3D shooter, except rather than a space ship you control a person running around with a stupidly powerful raygun.

The graphics look a little too good for the N64, the controls are super tight with the classic controller (once you get the hang of them), the enemies and eviornments are extremely bizzare (but weirdly cool), the story is incomprehensible and the gameplay is pure awesome.

Its best 12 bucks you'll spend this year. Don't hesitiate, download it ASAP.

Kirby 64 I can play alot. I'm kind of sad they have Panel De Pon for the Japanese Wii and not for the U.S. Wii. I hope they put that in the U.S. one instead of Tetris Attack. Ugh, why would they replace the Panel De Pon characters with Yosih characters I'll never know. <_<

Sorry everyone about my other post (in which I said you can't use the Component cables with VC games), but you CAN use VC games with component cables on your Wii. You must change the Video settings in the Wii to allow the VC games to be seen.

THere is still a little bit of hope for Earthbound fans. After examining the japanese VC site, I learned that neither of the 2 Mother games are available for the Japanese VC yet. THis is why if you look at the JP Dojo, there is no link whatsoever for Mother 2. THey possibly removed it because we are a long way from seeing it there. Also, neither of the titles have been confirmed to be JP exclusives. However, the Fire Emblem title in the JP masterpieces HAS been confirmed to be JP only.
Discuss.

That stinks! I like the fact that we even GOT Fire Emblem games, but I want to play the first one.

As for Mother games, I played Mother 2 (EarthBound) and loved it. It has a cult following of some kind. I NEED to play it.

Well, by this time we all know that the Smash 64 release date on VC of March 3 was pure bunk. So does anyone have any theories as to when we'll see that game? As a newcomer to the Smash series, I'm eager to play all three games in a great Smash Bros. marathon (but I lack a N64 to do this with the original game).

Other games I'm anxiously awaiting:
- Super Mario Kart
- The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
- Mega Man: The Wily Wars

Of course, there are many others, but the above are the main ones I'm hoping for.

A few games I'm waiting for, Kirby Dreamland 3 is one of them and is comming out soon. Kirby Super Star is already on the Japanese Wii so I'm guessing we will get this as well.

We're not getting Kirby Superstar for the Virtual Console, regretfully. We are getting a DS version with a bunch of new features, though, so I'd call it a worthy trade-off. I did so love that game back in the day...

We need Harvest Moon 64 for the VC, it's my favorite of the series. Actually, we just need more N64 games period.
