Good stuff; basically what you're doing involves pratfalling. Samus' jab 1 causes prat falls on both playforms and on ledges which involve a set amount of hitstun/unavoidable missed techs. They actually go over Samus at the end of this video, definitely watch it...

Obviously, when used effectively, down-smash is a fantastic move. I'm having issues coming up with ways to safely (or at least mostly safely) use this move in the neutral game. There is so much mileage that you can get from down-smash, I'm confident that learning to use this tool in a better way...

Great advice; in general I mostly relegate my bomb usage for air jukes/defensive maneuvers. I've gotten shield breaks in the past from bomb -> CS, but I can see here some instances in which I don't make it a point to actively try it, as you said.
