The syncing is actually really easy if you know what you're doing. Smash has a lot of visual cues to match the musical accents.

I'm pretty sure it is faster because if you dodge or roll out of a shield, the shield tilts before doing the action. Please refer to Forward's guide on buffering. Also, I've experienced the same thing a few times except with side smash. I was trying to buffer a roll, sidestep or jump but...
