You have to download that junk for IRC and Xat is just better IMO. IRC is way better than Chatango, though.

No you don't. There are a huge number of in-browser options for IRC.

Of course I recommend mIRC, on principle of using the best product available. But sure if it's not for you, use Mibbit or Chatzilla.
