When I am zoning at the center of the stage, my friend (a TL main) starts shooting me with projectiles. What do I do? It seems to me that it defeats the point of sitting there if I am just getting owned? Any help would be great!

learn to perfect shield his projectiles, and zone with FTilt and DTilt, then apply appropriate pressure.

I think your definition of zoning is confused with stage control. Zoning is remaining at an optimal distance from your opponent. When fighting a toon link, stay at a range where he wont be able to effectively hit you with projectiles, and his sword wont reach you either. This way, you can hit him with your sword and his options are limited.

Chances are I do. I wind up zoning and I start when they are close, but then I don't get closer later on. I suppose that is my problem. I don't chase enough. Thanks for the help!

Or you can mindgame them by boring him to death until he starts chasing you Shieldgrab and space your fair and retreat then attack again

But I recomend what Rukkiko said dont listen to me

Don't forget you can fan them or shad/spotdodge around them. Mainly just perfect shield though.
