Yoshi Videos Thread
Below is a compiled list (warning: Work in Progress) of videos featuring Yoshi, sorted by the opponents character. As of right now, this list will feature videos not only from the current version of Project M (v3.6) and videos of gameplay from past versions will be tagged as such. This thread is absolutely not limited to the best of the best Yoshis, so please, submit your videos, even if you lose, and even if you think you are not the best player. We would very much appreciate it. These videos are also not currently limited to tournament sets, but tournament sets (or money matches or otherwise staked games) are much better to learn from as they typically feature two players playing their hardest to win. Submitted videos of Friendlies will be tagged as such.

Most of all, this is a learning resource, and again we would very much appreciate your videos. If you post a video asking for advice, several of us would be very willing to watch and help, and if you would like to post a video seeking advice but do not want it featured in the OP, just let me know when you post your video.

@ hamyojo hamyojo are you okay with us featuring your vids?

By the way i want to congratulate you on your performance at IaB but i also want to tell you a few things about it. You are clearly very good and you transferred well from melee to pm but there are a lot of easy little things that would make you so much better.

Against roy, dont edgeguard with rising nair. Roys up b has ridiculous priority and will win every time. The first hit also has insane knockback and will break armor at 0%. You cant ledgehog roy with a roll, you dont have enough iframes. You need a combination of iframes from grabbing the ledge (like with dj instant edgehog) and a roll.

In general you should experiment with grabs more. Diddy, in particular, is a light semi fastfaller (just a little bit slower than fox) so yoshi can get insane followups and juggles off of uthrow and downthrow.

Sure, you can definitely use my stuff! And yeah... I'm definitely still not comfortable with all the options PM Yoshi has to offer. His grab especially, it blows my mind that it, well, works against people!

Me vs Mewtwo. Use Nair a lot. Be scared.
When M2 is wooping on the ledge, stand just too close for him to teleport on to you. If he jumps from ledge or drops and double jumps from ledge, even with an aerial, its super punishable. He can't get up attack and roll from ledge is easy to punish. Normal get up (below 100) is tricky to punish. You have to have good reactions and recognize the option he is going for. At the very least, you don't get hit yourself. If he teleports behind or above you, you just have to be ready with that upsmash/down b/nair.

Try to count how many woops they do on ledge before they pick their option. typically, they within +/- 1 throughout the set.

As you can see we are missing videos for a lot of characters. If you want to record some games later we can. Maybe if @Tombo is down you could record with him sometime too.

Matches v. @ DiZZ DiZZ aka Noghrilla. Comments critisicms and advice would be greatly appreciated since I have a lot of trouble with this matchup, in particular getting back to the stage.
Do you try to DJC against him while below the stage? I notice a couple of times you dip low for your recovery and he goes after you with an up-b causing you to flinch and die. Maybe another thing is he seems to up b out of any "scary" situation you put him in, is there a way to punish that somehow? You also take a lot of damage when edge guarding him. I'm not sure if sticking to ledge control over stage control is a good idea in this MU.

By the way I'm new here, so if I say anything that isn't correct please let me know. :)

Up b out is generally safe for dk he has very little end lag from up b when landing. Also most all yoshis have no idea on how to deal with dk up b offstage its pretty safe knockback stacks so your double jump armor sort of dies. Stage presence dk outspaces yoshi pretty easily idk guys seems like an uphill battle for you in neutral and offstage. Good luck though I want a challenge :)

I'm still not totally sure how to safely recover against DK. Often times when I dip low its to avoid a harder punish then the Up b because other moves, such as his nair, break armor much earlier. Taking 10-30% from up b is a lot better than getting gimped by nair. I'm sure it's not the optimal option every time I did it though; I'm still figuring things out.

His up b is an excellent option to get out of combos or any scary situation. It comes out fast and he moves faster than I can react or chase him, and as Nogh said it has little endlag, so the punish needs to come from a read 9 times out of 10. It also has really good hitboxes. You may notice at one point during these games, I downsmash his up-b near the ledge and I lose the trade despite spacing it fairly well.

As for edgeguarding DK, again I'm still trying to figure things out. Fair can be a good option sometimes. Nair is sometimes a good option but if he can get his up b out I will lose. One thing I experimented with a bunch in these games was invincible aerials. I grab the ledge to gain invincibility and immediately jump off the ledge (or drop then double jump) and put out an aerial. Since I have invincibility frames, it doesn't matter how good his hitboxes are, he will lose the trade every time. On the distant planet game in particular I did this 4 or 5 times with backair, but as it turns out, back air didn't really do much except put on a few %.

And by the way, DJC stands for double jump cancel as in canceling your double jump with an aerial or special. What I think you are referring to is how I jump through his attacks with the armor on my second jump.

Overall good observations. These were definitely the things I struggled with most in these matches.

I have to adjust my thoughts since it's netplay, but I often feel like it's more on us to be able to maintain our momentum. A lot of times you were running into his getup attacks or something that was his defensive option. I assume it's because you wanted to cross up with possibly a DJC Nair or pivot grab. You have to respect those options since they take up a crapton of space when initiated.

I've also seen you slightly panic when you're being pressured too hard by resorting to Down-B to get out of the situation. Careful of that habit for future notice.

I feel as if your assumption level (when trying to read your opponent's next move) is too far ahead. Some that are 50/50s are fine if you miss, but I often see you going for options that your opponent won't event be near or opting to continue your combo instead of finishing it to have stage control. I know some of it has to be thought ahead with netplay, but it seemed like it was TOO far ahead. Instead of being indirect and covering where your opponent could be all the time, go directly at him. Wait for a response (you should be spaced just enough to where his options can't hit you immediately), and react to them with a direct answer.

Lastly, please move your mouse when you record next time. I hate seeing that thing while trying to focus on a match lol. /petpeeve

I dont play netplay differently than i do irl. And as for the mouse, yeah sorry, nogh pointed it to me when i uploaded them.

Going for hard reads is just a (bad) habit of my playstyle. I have trouble staying out of range of get up attack while still being able to cover the roll away.

Ive been told to be careful about down b before. Believe it or not what you see is me using it a lot more sparringly with a much higher success rate than i used to. Its such a hilariously broken move but im still trying to figure out what situations work and which dont.

When i knock someone down and they are decently far away to the point where i dont force an immediate reaction, what do you suggest i do?

Cut the space to where you can force an option. Stage control is still a major factor because when you retreat, you won't be completely backed into the ledge or forced to make an option due to lack of space to move. Just stay out of their attack range and react to an option. Since getup options have invincibility, it's better off to force a move since they're limited to mostly 3 options.

The reason I mentioned this is you'd lose your 2nd jump over the cliff. I was wondering if DK's up be really eats through most of the super armor or if you tried to attack to get him away from you. Thank you for the reply, though. Really smart idea with the invisibility punish. Maybe turn yourself around with DJ and forward smash? Not sure if that'd be dangerous or not.

I know this is sort of an obvious one but if you could read grabs more you could do a lot more work. Whenever he grabbed you he'd throw you on his back and jump up in the air and throw you upwards before doing some strong attack like forward smash. You got punished for a lot of missed grabs, if you can get more grabs in I'm sure you could control the situation better. Sorry if I'm pointing out the obvious :yoshimelee:

You did really well. You made a lot of the right decisions (or at least the same decisions I would have made). Now, you just need to upgrade your toolkit. The biggest issue I saw was your recovery. Almost every time you double jumped back to the stage and just tried to jump over or through your opponent, sometimes throwing out an aerial, which led to unnecessary damage and some deaths. More options that you should include in your kit for mixups are: airdodging out of your jump, wavelanding on stage, sweetspotting the edge with an up-b or down-b, recovering to the ledge from high above it with down-b, eggrolling over the ledge, eggrolling after a high recovery over your opponent to a platform, b-reversing your neutral b to shift your momentum. To just become a better Yoshi, expand your kit, and work on double jump cancels and movement. Work on platform wavelands and funny mixups that you can do with them. It will take some time and practice to get comfortable enough with them to actually use them in a game, just like when you first learned to wavedash, but they are really powerful when you master them.

Yooo I got ya so much footage today
Yeah, I saw winners', losers', and grand finals, Good job. You did a few especially interesting things against the cfal like the rising dair edgeguard. Against Lunchables your combo game was on point and your edgeguards were solid but you just got bopped in neutral, especially by the bombs. I think it might be worth your while to work on catching items. Throwing bombs back at him will relieve pressure and create more openings which would be especially helpful since it looks like your punish game on him is stronger than his on you.

TL vs. Yoshi is basically

Because yoshi isn't designed correctly, he has an incredibly good punish game off of grabs/armor while suffering in neutral to bombs.

Vs Falco until (8:30)

I need some critique on my performance. I don't play PM regularly, so I entered this tourney for fun. My opponent is a prominent Falco main in melee, so I had a tough set ahead of me. I have troubles with dtilt at the edge turning instead into a dair, has anyone else experienced this?

Some habits that were getting you placed in bad positions or punished were using Down-B in the air, overuse of egglay, full hop Fairs, and consistently missed dash grabs. I'm assuming that the FH Fairs and overuse of Egglay are stemming from Smash 4. Regardless, using the moves that way places you in a more detrimental position.

Egglay is different because since Yoshi's tongue is moving farther out, you have to space it properly to hit. There's a clean gap in between the tip of his tongue and his mouth.

The Fairs are much more useful when heading towards the ground so you can L-cancel and apply jab pressure. Yoshi is very liable to trade with a lot of hitboxes, and getting caught with a move like Lightning Kick (Zelda's Fair/Bair) isn't a type of trade you want to take, especially if it leads to a potential combo against you.

Be careful about how long you remain in the air. When the level of play gets higher, being in the air longer tends to get certain characters punished harder due to the limited options (and knowing that you have to come down). Take some time with a little bit of dash dances and punish mistakes to mix up your game to prevent it from being a constant rushdown. You were getting a little predictable with the approaches.

Dash Attacking towards the ledge will have Yoshi fall off at the end of the animation due to momentum. It's been a thing in melee, so you just have to be aware of it. Sucks you had to learn it that way. :(

Matchup specific wise, you have to respect Zelda's aerials (namely Fair & Bair). Those moves are the bane of Yoshi's DJ Armor. Stay close to the ground, and push her towards the edge so you can get more opportunities to add in damage. As for Falco, it's extremely hard to say what to do vs him because Parry isn't what it needs to be to help this matchup.

One of the requirements is to have a strong punish game to the point where the Falco player has to fear of getting 0-deathed the moment you get a hit in. A combo game (or punishment game) is part of the smash game, and what you were doing was getting stray hits and resetting things back to neutral often.

There were some moments where you can edge guard Falco during his upB because he has no hitbox during the charge. Also, stop charging Dsmash. You can react to his options lol. Speaking of which, your reactions are slow. This is most likely due to unfamiliarity of the characters and the game, but those reaction times are extremely important.

Haha yeah I see what you mean Scatz. I used egglay pretty often because of Smash 4, but I realize that it's not so good in close range here. Grabs are also a bit iffy as well because I try to pivot grab sometimes but end up with a bad dash grab.

The dash attack at the edge translating momentum makes sense now, so I gotta make sure I don't do that anymore lol. I have to really learn yoshi's egg tosses because I had trouble aiming them. I played pretty slow because I'm still pretty unfamiliar with the game and its matchup differences (holy crap zelda is good). Thank you! I'll try get my yoshi more polished come next tournament.

I've noticed not many Lucas v Yoshi games in 3.5 Here are 2 upper mid-level sets:
Yay, I am officially an upper mid-level Yoshi player now :)

Unfortunately I don't get much stream time because the stream setup is usually running melee. I did manage to get some doubles sets recorded at that tourney though.

This is the most amazing game ever in the history of hilarious strats.

Two games from me that finally got uploaded.

Vs Flamin' Roy (Fox)

Vs Cloud-9 (Zelda) (1st match only)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xpv_obg-zkg

I messed up a lot of pivot grabs vs Flamin' Roy, and I need to work on my punish game more. It's very sloppy, and didn't really get a chance to work on it until Thursday before the event. 3rd game, he just got the download on me, and I didn't adapt.

Made two crucial mistakes vs Cloud-9's Zelda that made me lose badly in the end.

Overall, was okay considering I was off practice for like a month (only had a week to get back into things), but I had high expectations, so losing really early made me pretty sad for a few days. Thoughts and comments as always.
