I've already played Super Smash Bros. and Super Smash Bros. Melee, why would I want to re-buy them over a new game with new characters, stages, features, online, and an overall new experience.

I'm with you, Reila, Super Smash Bros. Melee isn't my favorite either...though I'm sorry to say that Smash 64 isn't either (I really can't seem to play it well after growing used to Melee & Brawl)..my fav. is actually Brawl (technically Project M..but its not official).
I'm pretty sure that characters alone will make both versions of Smash 4 my new favorite though..so many characters I wanted got in.

How can someone vote 64 + Melee? We played those games already! I voted for Smash 3DS.

No ****ing way. SSB3D has everything to be better than SSB64 (my favorite game in the series) and SSBM (my least favorite game in the series, by a huge margin). You know what would have been interesting instead? SSB64 bundled together with SSB3D and SSBM bundled with SSBU, kinda like Bayonetta 2 which will be released with the original Bayonetta as a bonus. This way, the people who are picking SSBU (lots of them are diehard competitive players) would get their beloved Melee and I would get my favorite Smash game on the 3DS.
This is one of the most casual posts I have ever seen, and i'm kind of a casual myself.

I want a new game. I can already play SSB64 on my Wii, and I can already play SSBM on my Wii as well, but it would be nice if they re-released them on VC.

Yeah, count me as a SSB3DS player, I can't imagine wanting an old game over a new one, especially with how good this new game looks. I'm more of a 'leave melee in the past' sort of player, give the new game a chance, and see where things are going.

I already have those two games. I'd rather have a new one.

If there's going to be any port of any kind, it should be a Virtual Console release, preferably with online matchmaking. I would kill to have that.

I'd love Smash 64 on 3DS with a For Fun/For Glory online mode but I can't imagine playing melee on 3ds. I'd be really afraid for the safety of my console.

I agree.
I mean, I love Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. Project M, but I feel that with all fighting games, not just Super Smash Bros, competitive fans tend to dislike the new entry in a series without really giving it much a chance..like we see people wanting Super Smash Bros. Melee 2 or Marvel vs Capcom 2 Part 2.
I personally think that it has more to do with being very used to the style and gameplay of the previous game, since its what you've studied, what you've got ingrained into your playstyle, that makes it harder to adapt to something even a little different.

There's nothing wrong with liking one game over the other, but I feel people should give the new ones a chance and definitely not say the new ones 'suck' just because they may not, in one's opinion, be better then a previous entry, since they are still usually well put together and fun games if given a chance.

I also quite like where it seems to be going, Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U seems like it will be as perfect a fusion of Super Smash Bros. Melee & Super Smash Bros. Brawl, along with somethings that may arguably be inspired by Project M. It may not include the things that were glitches in Melee, but it seems to be trying to mix the best of what was intended for both games along with so much more.

Honestly, I would take the ports in a heart-beat. I always wanted Smash to be portable and I do not enjoy the limitations of the 3DS influencing the Wii U version. However, we do not live in a perfect world.

I'm unsure how much the limitations of the Nintendo 3DS is 'influencing' the Wii U version. Both versions are looking like they're going to be packed with content, a heck of alot more then 64, Melee, or Brawl had..even on just the Nintendo 3DS version.
Its looking like we'll have near 50ish characters, alternate costumes for a good portion if not most of the characters, gameplay same as always essentially, just as many stages if not more, 2 Music option per stage like Melee for 3DS with My Music returning for Wii U, and more. The only thing the new game won't have that a previous game had, that we're aware of, is a Story Mode with Cutscenes..but we also know that wasn't due to any limitations.
The only limitation we'd actually heard about was that they were having trouble implementing Team Characters like the Ice Climbers on the Nintendo 3DS version, but with the announcement of Rosalina, who appears just as complex if not more-so then the Ice Climbers, its safe to assume they overcame that.
So I ask you, what limitations 'effecting' the Wii U version are you referring to?
I'm not meaning this to be snarky or attacking or anything, but I am legitimately curious as, thus far, there don't seem to be any sort of effect caused by 3DS limitations.

What fool chooses ports over a new game? You've played melee and 64, a new game is so much better.

I would play the new game on console. However, I would prefer if the portable experience was something more familiar, something I actually wanted. I am not sure why that makes me a fool.

SSB 3DS for sure. Love both Melee and 64, but they've been done. If they were done again, they'd be worse and it would be the same game again.

It makes sense to remake a game like Wind Waker, but it's just silly to remake something like Smash Bros and Mario Kart.

I do love 64, but to be honest the roster for 3DS is the first time I've seen a roster and been like "Yeah, this game is going to be good." I know people love melee, but it never did it for me, and Brawl was fun but tired quickly with the tripping thing. I want Smash 3DS and not a port of games that have already existed.

With games like OoT3D & SF643D, I don't think any of us would think twice if at the time, an enhanced Melee port with online & some extra fighters/features was announced. Most of us would rationalized that its better that way because it doesn't detract that much resources away from SSB4 on Wii U.

But since we live in the world where both sytems are getting wholly new games, I am certainly they went the extra distance to give the 3DS a full blown SSB sequel of its own.

Smash 3DS without hesitation, but it's not like the other option wouldn't be nice. :p I'd be more happy with Melee being on the Wii U's eShop over Melee + 64 on 3DS, though.

My original dream for a portable smash, way before SSB3D was announced, was for SSB64 to be ported to DS or 3DS in the same way Super Mario 64, Ocarina of Time & StarFox 64 were, but with online multiplayer (local's useless since I can play that on my Wii/U).

After I abandoned that dream, I decided I wanted the games to adopt SSB64 skins, similar to how one of the Virtual Fighter games did on PS2, where it had old-ass arcade/Saturn/whatever models.

Still waiting on that.

As for "would I prefer SSB64/Melee to SSB3D?" No. Especially with no online.

But also because I would rather have access to Smash Run, new modes/characters/stages and new gameplay. Oh, and 3D.

I would definitely get a portable version of SSB64 on the eShop, however. And I would definitely want 64 stages.
As for Melee, I'd rather an online version appear on Wii U on the eShop (for cheap) than on 3DS.

However, it's still a hard sell because I do -not- generally buy 'ports' or Virtual Console games unless there's a big change. Online isn't big enough. It's still just a port of games I already own. All my VC titles are games I've never owned, and ones I -did- own are only because of Club Nintendo's monthly games or getting them free in some fashion.

I will always sooner buy a new game before an old game. The only exception is if it is a full remake, like Metroid Zero Mission, or Resident Evil on Gamecube. Majora's Mask is also an exception because it is literally one of my favorite games of all time. I would buy a Wii U or 3DS upgrade of it. However, I did NOT buy it on Virtual Console, since I had no reason to (able to play the Gamecube version).

At one point I agreed, but now:

:insert picture of a bear holding his paws up with caption saying 'How about no' here:

But seriously, putting Melee and Smash 64 on the eShop might take away attention of the new version.

I'm honestly fairly sure that the systems limitations ended up having no effect on the final product, since they've announced never before seen features for both versions of the game and the team mechanic that did give them issue seems to have been resolved since Rosalina is just as, if not more so, complex then the Ice Climbers are and she's made it onto both versions.

I don't think it makes you a fool, just someone with a different opinion (I know that wasn't directed towards me, but I figured I'd say so anyway). However, I do have to ask this: Why would you want to have a portable game give you a more then familial but identical experience? Super Smash Bros. itself hasn't changed too much since its conception, so it will still be a familiar experience regardless, just with subtle differences.
As for what you wanted, I can not say, but for what I've wanted since Super Mario 64 DS was a portable Super Smash Bros. that wasn't a remake but a new experience in and of itself, which Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS promises to deliver.

With games like OoT3D & SF643D, I don't think any of us would think twice if at the time, an enhanced Melee port with online & some extra fighters/features was announced. Most of us would rationalized that its better that way because it doesn't detract that much resources away from SSB4 on Wii U.

I'm actually fairly certain that neither game took development resources from one another, since Sakurai seems to be creating the two games as separate but complimentary games to one another and they were likely given two separate budgets for the two versions of Super Smash Bros.

In fact, I'm fairly certain that, being the perfectionist he is, Sakurai wouldn't let one version negatively effect the other.

@ MAtgSy MAtgSy : I am also certain they went the distance on these two, both games seem to be jam packed with content, with the Wii U likely only having more music due to having more space.

@ Mensrea Mensrea : As for the release date, yes, the Wii U one may have gotten to be released in place of the Nintendo 3DS one, maybe, if the 3DS version hadn't been made, but not by much and only because they had to test what they wanted to implement on the Nintendo 3DS version first before creating it on the Wii U version. However, in my opinion, the release date gap likely won't be that large, since its looking like the Wii U version may release in November, possibly the same day as Pokemon OmegaRuby and AlphaSapphire, since a Nintendo representative at E3 reportedly stated that they want to release the games before Black Friday, which would mean that the gap would only be a little over a month anyway while we'll have two versions of Smash Bros. to play for at least 5-8 years until the next one.

The answer is an obvious "Smash 3DS". However, I can't help but wonder why the question is "which would you rather have" instead of "how can we convince Nintendo to put the others on the 3DS EShop".

Although, frankly, the 3DS EShop seems restricted to handheld titles only, which sucks. We'd only get the original and 64 on the handheld as enhanced ports the way we did Ocarina of Time and Starfox 64.

Definitely not lol

I want a new smash game. I can play ssb64 on my phone.

To put it as tactfully as I can: when sm4sh comes out, my thoughts will be **** 64, melee, brawl, pm, and people who treat sm4sh 3DS as not a real game.
How are you any different from those people by expressing this sentiment? If it weren't for those other games, this community wouldn't even exist.

On topic, I would take SSB3DS. I never owned or really played 64 or Melee.

I think you misunderstood me. I don't dislike any of those games. I love them all.

What I mean is, when Sm4sh comes out, I will be too hyped for it to care about any other game in the slightest, least of all older smash games. You don't wait for Halo Reach for months, download it on the release day, then play halo 2 or 3 instead, lol.

And for the last part people who treat sm4sh 3ds as not a real game just get on my nerves

I would prefer the second option because we already have Smash 4 on Wii U, plus it shouldn't have been a 3DS title in the first place

Why is that? It seems to work just fine on the Nintendo 3DS, it plays well, people enjoy it, and its been highly requested that Super Smash Bros. get a portable entry for years. At the very least since the Nintendo DS had a remake of Super Mario 64 that worked surprisingly well.

Beyond that, what would you really lose by having a Nintendo 3DS entry of Super Smash Bros? The Wii U entry would still be there for people to enjoy. The Nintendo 3DS entry would simply be there for people, such as myself, that want both.

You do realize Smash 3DS was being developed solely for the 3DS until they decided to expand it to include to Wii U in the hopes of salvaging Wii U sales? In Japan Handhelds are the main gaming systems, and very few own consoles anymore. The PS4 sold even worse than the Wii U, which still sold remarkably poorly in its home country. In that sense, you should thank your lucky stars the Wii U is getting it, not bash the 3DS version. ^_^

That's not what I'd heard, I seem to recall Iwata announcing that they'd be doing Super Smash Bros. on both Nintendo 3DS and Wii U before the Wii U was even released and before Smash Bros. was even officially revealed.

From http://nintendoeverything.com/sakur...dlc-patching-why-villagertrainer-are-in-more/

Sakurai on how the new Smash Bros. came to be and differences between the two versions… While the development of Kid Icarus: Uprising was at its end, Satoru Iwata came me propose to develop the new Smash Bros game, and asked me if he should be on 3DS or Wii U. We were arrived at a point where the series could not evolve too, and we wondered if the passage on handheld console was the solution. In the past, we have increased the number of characters and arenas, but this was not enough. At that time, we could have chosen to develop a 3DS version only.

Now of course, this same article goes on to say this:

Thus, even if it is not easy to develop two versions simultaneously, we chose to adapt the game experience to the specifications of each platform. Even though the characters will be the same in the version Wii U and Nintendo 3DS, the arena will be completely different. In the 3DS version, they are based on games released on portable consoles, while Wii U, arenas are based on articles on home console games.

So admittedly this was only in the VERY early stages of development, but for a time smash was not going to be Wii U. This is the best proof I can find. Sorry if it's insufficient.

No Pit, no point.

I play these games for the characters, so I suspect I'll always choose the title with the biggest roster. Though I'll admit I did prefer the faster speed of Melee.

So yeah, 3DS definitely. No need for the thinking music.

No. I don't even like Melee that much, I prefer 64. But Brawl is my fav out of them all =3 But I wont give a **** about any of them when SSB3DS comes out. Sorry if I offend any of you, but honestly I think it's VERY stupid if you want SSB64\Melee over a new one. You can already play them on your Wii/GC/N64!

People are acting like the Wii U version needs to be better, because they think Smash will save the Wii U. If you want the 3DS version to get cancelled so they can "focus"on the U version just because YOU want that, that's also stupid. Do you think more people own a Wii U than 3DS or something? Do you think Japan prefers consoles over handhelds? Please do your research if so.
