I am also unsure of the extent of the 3DS version's limitations and to what end they influence the Wii U version. I suppose we will never know. It just bothers me that it will.
I would play the new game on console. However, I would prefer if the portable experience was something more familiar, something I actually wanted. I am not sure why that makes me a fool.
I'm honestly fairly sure that the systems limitations ended up having no effect on the final product, since they've announced never before seen features for both versions of the game and the team mechanic that did give them issue seems to have been resolved since Rosalina is just as, if not more so, complex then the Ice Climbers are and she's made it onto both versions.
I don't think it makes you a fool, just someone with a different opinion (I know that wasn't directed towards me, but I figured I'd say so anyway). However, I do have to ask this: Why would you want to have a portable game give you a more then familial but identical experience? Super Smash Bros. itself hasn't changed too much since its conception, so it will still be a familiar experience regardless, just with subtle differences.
As for what you wanted, I can not say, but for what I've wanted since Super Mario 64 DS was a portable Super Smash Bros. that wasn't a remake but a new experience in and of itself, which Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS promises to deliver.
With games like OoT3D & SF643D, I don't think any of us would think twice if at the time, an enhanced Melee port with online & some extra fighters/features was announced. Most of us would rationalized that its better that way because it doesn't detract that much resources away from SSB4 on Wii U.
But since we live in the world where both sytems are getting wholly new games, I am certainly they went the extra distance to give the 3DS a full blown SSB sequel of its own.
If it meant that the Wii U version would get all dev resources, and release earlier, than yes.
I'm actually fairly certain that neither game took development resources from one another, since Sakurai seems to be creating the two games as separate but complimentary games to one another and they were likely given two separate budgets for the two versions of Super Smash Bros.
In fact, I'm fairly certain that, being the perfectionist he is, Sakurai wouldn't let one version negatively effect the other.

: I am also certain they went the distance on these two, both games seem to be jam packed with content, with the Wii U likely only having more music due to having more space.

: As for the release date, yes, the Wii U one may have gotten to be released in place of the Nintendo 3DS one, maybe, if the 3DS version hadn't been made, but not by much and only because they had to test what they wanted to implement on the Nintendo 3DS version first before creating it on the Wii U version. However, in my opinion, the release date gap likely won't be that large, since its looking like the Wii U version may release in November, possibly the same day as Pokemon OmegaRuby and AlphaSapphire, since a Nintendo representative at E3 reportedly stated that they want to release the games before Black Friday, which would mean that the gap would only be a little over a month anyway while we'll have two versions of Smash Bros. to play for at least 5-8 years until the next one.
