is anybody camping out to get a wii? i'm going friday afternoon and best buy is gonna open at 10 o clock, i think thats pretty good cuz the guy said for halo 2 ppl stayed from lunchtime the day before and were able to get one. anybody have any suggestions for camping out, has anyone done it before?
See, the difference here is Halo 2 is a game, which they can press nearly endless copies off before a release date. The Wii is a console, and they can't make a nearly endless amount of them before release date.

Don't have to camp out....saved by preorders.

And why can no one see Smash64 being online? It's a game centralized around multiplayer...

I guess I shouldn't say I would be shocked. Bad wording. I just expect them to add it.

I am camping, still. Can't wait, hope the weather isn't bad.

Smash64 wasn't built to be online. They would probably have to remake the game to get it online, and with Brawl already going to be online there isn't point in doing it.

thank you Krisp and cashed for having common sense. for somethign like a new consol like that you have to be there for a while and the best buy near me is getting something around 100 of them so theres a pretty good chance i'll get it but still the question remains for anyone whos camped out before if theres a trick or secret or something i should know to bring it would be appreciated.

SLow down, back up. There's now way in heck your best buy is getting 100 units. Try 50 max, probably less, w/o any shipping problems. Then count in the preorders and subtract maybe 30. That's like 15 units available for campers at launch. THere may be more since the Wii is being produced faster than expected, but probably no more than 20 to 25 at the max for those without pre-orders. The system WILL sell out day one, so you'll have to be in line pretty early. That isn't to say you have to be there like the night before launch, but probably like 5-6 hours ahead of time should do the trick.

Here you go.
1. Bring DS or PSP, preferably DS, more appropriate.
2. Bring food and/or drink.
3. Bring ride.
4. Covers or something warm.
5. Friends are good.
6. GC controller, just in case someone brings a GC and generater and TV. Or you could bring one.
7. Money, duh.
8. A light wouln't hurt.

There you go, list is subject to change. Just what I want to have.

The time to get there would probably depend on the number of gamers in you community. Probably 1.5 hours for each gamer, just in case.
Just in case is very important. Remember, strength in numbers

No, not a thousand.

My two Gamestops only go 11 Wiis (all gone within an hour and it wasn't announced) and 20 PS3 (gone also within an hour when word of mouth spread about both).

If it was some guy saying a bundle of Wiis, he may have just meant what he though was alot, which could be anywhere from 20 - 50. (Wal-Mart is your worst bet though because they offer no pre-orders you will have to face the others camping out and most do it in the store. I remember three days before the PS2 came out it was announced that our Wal-mart somehow got 50 PS2s and there was a blob forming outside. It got bad)

LOL @ 1000 Wiis in one store.
I have 3 EB/Gamestops, 1 Wal*Mart, and a Toys'R'Us near me. What are the chances of me getting a Wii early? Do I need to camp?

I have like two Wal-marts and a K-Mart that are about a 30 min drive from where I am at. I think I am gonna get my wii for Christmas and get TP for x-mas also. Man, I hate it there isn't any thing like a Best Buy or EB/Gamestop near me. It sucks.

Wait. They took more PS3 orders than Wii? Are they insane? My gamestop took 34 preorders for Wii, and only like 6 for PS3. Gamestop officially announced than each store would have at minimum 8 PS3s and at MAX 16, assuming there were no problems. And you're saying they took 20 preorders?

I didn't get to preorder b/c no store advertised it and when they were taking them (Friday morning and Sunday morning) I couldn't go.

I'm thinking of camping out with my friend. Maybe at a Best Buy or a Target since I don't think they took preorders. If anyone is camping out too, what time do you think I should head out and wait? I was thinking 3-4 hrs before hand would be enough.

When I tried to preorder at my EB, the only employee inside had gone out and taken names, so if they do that wherever you decide to camp out, you might need to get there more than just 3-4 hours. Although since it's not a specialty store, they might not be as concerned about it. The only place near me that's not preordered out the wazoo yet is Target, and I don't know what time they'll be opening.

ChRed, the EB by me also took more PS3 preorders, which I thought was nuts too, but the guy said it was just because since they'll be getting more shipments of Wii's before they get more PS3 shipments, they're not that worried about people preordering. I can't remember if you can preorder later shipments, does anyone know?

According to the people that work at the one here, yes, 20.

So what would be the best place to camp out? I heard Wal-Mart did preorders, so they are probably crossed off the list. That leaves Best Buy, whom, to my knowledge, haven't done preorders, Target, K-Mart, and such. Would a place like Sam's Club have them? And will it even be worth it to camp out considering there are reports of 2 million Wii's on launch day?

Our Walmart did NOT do preorders. Me and a friend are camping out for 30 or so hours to get a PS3 to sell on Ebay.

That's basically what my friend is doing. He's going to sell his for about 5 thou.
When the Xbox360 came out, I pre-order one and sold it for 2 thou on ebay >.>

That is the smartest thing to do too. Because then you can not only afford a PS3, 360, AND Wii, but you can put a down payment on a decent HDTV by Christmas.

Smartest and profitable yes, but not very....nice. People want to play those for fun, all you think about is money.

But if someone is willing to buy them I guess you might as well sell them.

*shrugs*

If I had enough money, then I would definitely start scalping PS3s. If I was taking advantage of poor, unfortunate innocents then perhaps there would be some ethical questions involved. . .but if you're scalping PS3s, you're taking advantage of idiots who would willingly pay over 350% of the retail price just to play videogames early, when they could just wait like a normal person and save hundreds of dollars.

Anyways, I'm camping out at Nintendo World Store, and here's my list of stuff I'm bringing:

1) A decent book

2) DS with Advance Wars and New Super Mario Brothers

3) Mario figurine (yes, I carry a plastic figurine of Mario with me wherever I go)

4) A non-descript duffel bag to carry my Wii back in, so I won't get jumped on the subway/bus back home

5) Plenty of snacks (healthy ones like celery and fruits, yay!) and fluids (water!) >_>

6) Blankets

7) Friends who will actually be stupid enough to camp out with me (will be difficult)

8) A camera to record my foolish exploit(s)

Camping at Nin World= 12 hour wait, min. Silly idea.
I can afford the 12 hour wait. . .it's not like I actually have a life that I'd be missing if I camped out for 12 hours, ha ha ha ha ha. . .

*adjusts collar nervously*

. . .er, I mean that despite my active, emotionally fulfulling social life that I'd certainly be missing if I camp out, I'd be willing to do it to get a Wii. >_>

Haha.

And yes, I have problems selling a PS3 for $x to people, but then I realize that they're just downright dumb for being willing to pay for that.

Seriously...if a spoiled rich kids gonna get a PS3, I'd rather profit from it.

How much you think it'll go for, anyways? Any rough guesses?

And will that long be enough, ya think? Wednesday after school, skip Thursday, open at midnight. I think it'll probably be long enough...

yeah this is my list so far:

tent
sleeping bag
knife
money
jackets
gloves
double socks
warmest shoes<boots>
sandwiches
hard candies
homework
fold out chairs
pillow
warm hat
caffeen pills
watch

i've got 2 friends comming with me, the controller and light are good ideas. the best buy is in a kind of bad area so i don't wanna bring something like a DS or IPOD that will matter if it ends up missing. the guy at the store i talked to said 100, i was just going by that but didn't take into account that the reserves cut into the 100 and i'm sure employee's get first dibs and things like that, thanks for the ideas.

nice maelstrom, another good idea with the bag so no one knows what you've got. i'd be careful about the liquids and snacks, especially the natural ones becuase then you'll have to go to the bathroom a lot and you never know how its ruled with these lines but i'm sure ppl will start to get pissed at you if you leave too often, even if you really gotta go. idk where you live but i'm in NY so i'm bringing a tent which would be a good idea for keeping the wind down, especially at night when you'll need it.

My friends and I are going to hold a small Smash Tournament, then go out to Best Buy, WalMart, Target, or K Mart and sit outside for a couple hours. Shouldn't be too boring. If only I had any earthly idea how to hook up a generator correctly we could simply make the tournament mobile.

Still, any suggestion on the place? If WalMart did online preorders, does that mean it would be impossible to get one without?

Wow,must we REALLY be camping out for a Wii.
Do you really think it's that bad?
Man, I really hope not...that would totally suck.
I live out in the middle of nowhere-ish, so it's actually easier to get stuff like that because there's just not as much demand for it because there's less people.

I wonder if I'll be able to go shopping on day 1, just normally, and buy one.
Or better yet, manage to pre-order one...

I have Zelda pre-ordered already...
It's ridiculous. This doesn't happen with other things near as bad, does it?
Well, I guess it does once in a while...like Star Wars movies.

Isn't that sad, that our video game launches are being thrown into the same category as new Star Wars movies and Tickle Me Elmos?

If I can't get one AT launch, I'd better be able to get one first week of December at the Nintendo World store...or SOMEWHERE in NYC, for that matter.

I think it's good that consoles launching are reaching the sensation of Star Wars launches. Nintendo might be more prone to make kick *** games if they realize that the whole world is listening to them again.

Bring it to the masses!!

I'm going to repeat my question here: How much do you people guess a PS3 will go for?

$2000? $3000?
Seems kinds cheap. I mean, chances are the spoiled rich kids preordered, and the people you'll be ripping off are the parents of kids who want the thing for Christmas or something.

It's not that it's being brought to the masses, it's that they're not making enough for everyone added to the fact that many people who were gamers still are, and many new gamers have emerged over the past decade or two. They're focusing so much on hardware and announcing things a lot sooner than they used to, so they have deadlines to crunch for.

Movies are different--if you can't make it to the first showing, you can come back again later for another. While console launches are like this to an extent it's a much more prolonged period of time--weeks or months instead of days.

And I think it's a BAD thing that this is becoming like Tickle Me Elmo and Star Wars. It makes it seem all the more childish and immature that people will camp in tents in front of a store.

Seriously, do you admire people who sit out in the streets and Star Wars cosplay/roleplay scenes from the movies as they wait to watch it? I look and say, "They must have no life."
I really want one, but customers ate already paying money, they shouldn't have to pay 48 hours of their life sitting in a parking lot on top of that.

I think the solution would be for these companies to stop overestimating what they do in short periods of time so they can start manufacturing earlier.
The industry has gotten so rushed that we're already learning about games 2 or 3 years before they finally get released. I dunno, it just seems very strange. Then again, I guess the same thing has happened with about every form of media these days, so it's a cultural thing, isn't it?

Zink, you know rich kids who are willing to wait in the cold for something they want instead of just having their daddy buy it for them?

They're obviously not that rich.

I don't think it would matter whether you're rich or not. If you want the Wii(and I mean really want), and you haven't pre-ordered, you're gonna go out there and get it, even if it means camping out. I don't think how rich you are has anything to do with it.

I don't think it will be too bad. I really can't see over 80 people waiting outside of a Target on a cold November morning.

Dude. We're on an internet forum, posting about videogames. We go to tournaments for a videogame fighter. We talk about theories, tactics, and strategies for the said fighter. Camping out for a console isn't such a huge step up in nerdiness/geekiness than what we're doing now.

. . .granted, if we line up for a console, we're displaying our rampant fanboy propensities to the entire city population, whereas we can videogame in private. But still. . .

Anyways, I'm planning on camping out, but not only because I want to get a Wii ASAP. I'm camping out because I'd like to do something incredibly wacky and stupid so I can look back on my life and think, "wow, I can't believe I did something so ridiculous back then," and smile about it.

Like the time when I watched the ball drop in Times Square about 25 blocks away, sitting in sub-zero temperature while a cop was making fun of me. Good times, man, good times.

I've preordered one, but I'll still probably go for a midnight opening if they have one. Just to get it early and go home and Zelda-ize my life.

Oh, sweet Zelda.
