I was watching ESPN last night and they had a trivia question "What was the most watched television sport globally last year?". Believe it or not its SOCCER!

How can this be? How can such a boring, unwatchable sport be the most watched sport in the world?

That's a little harsh isn't it? A lot of people internationally follow and love soccer. Maybe in the US it isnt as popular, but around the world it is definitely the most watched sport.

I duno i like watching Euroleague and WC matches.

Because it's the world's most popular sport?

Personally I think American Football is ********, but I don't go running around disrespecting Americans for liking it, being a sport fan is like being a music fan. You like whichever appeals to you.

i dont really see what ******** about it. you get in a stance, wait....the quaterback yells gibberish and HIKE! you slam into someone blocking the defenders, the QB throws the football. the reciever catches the ball, gets tackled(HARD!). and repeat 4 times, then it the other team turn.

it seems fun to me. i understand that soccer require ALOT of footwork, endurance(i never saw ppl over 200lbs >_>) and practiced F-smashes.im assuming people cant handle it. i thought baseball ws boring to watch IMO but fun to play. people just need to play the sport to understand it.

I think a sport is a lot more fun to watch if you know what's going on.

For example I find baseball really boring to watch but someone on my softball team would get mad at me for saying that and say that it's really complex, etc.

I don't know, when they scream "GOAAAAAL!" that gets me more excited and interested in the game then any other sport. I grew up with soccer, and watched it on TV. Down in Chile, it's like the main thing, you see kids playing soccer all the time. I swear everyone has at least one soccer ball down there.

Baseball is more boring, I never understood the fun in that.

A tERAN said, it's because it's the world's most popular sport. Why is it the world's most popular sport? Because all you need is a ball and four object to mark the goals.

It's also a sport were all the team members are skillful, not just some bulking giants that won't let you pass through.

Don't get me wrong, I DO watch football, and its an amazing game too. But in soccer one player doing bad can do all the difference.

Although I'm in a bad mood, so ignore me.

lol, yeah, I wish MLS was higher quality football.

Anyway, to answer the OP, soccer is neither boring nor uncool. It's most definitely not boring, I'm not sure how one could possibly come to that conclusion.

I used to hate soccer when I was little, but later I realized how great of a sport it was, and really American Football is more boring and harder to watch. Soccer is also really cheap (money wise) just a ball and imaginary lines for the goal posts:)
Also I agree with teran 100%

It seems to me that people ENJOY watching boring sports. Sports that are low scoring affairs seem to be tearing up the TV rankings. Football and Soccer are two of the most watched sports worldwide, while they could be considered quite boring. Soccer's fundamentals are actually quite similar to a sport that is widely disliked for being boring, hockey.

Another contributing factor to soccer's popularity is how children in poverty tend to play the sport as it requires little equipment. That explains the sports popularity in South America and Africa. It's honestly of little use to argue opinions, as no one's opinion can be proven, and the soccer nerds on this site will probably debate with me until the end of time.

A true sports fan would disagree with you. There's more than just watching 22 guys running after a ball, it's called passion for your team/country.

I find it funny that US people call Football, Football. If you know what I mean...

LOL, does anyone else think the OP written the article about how soccer is ruining America? lol

Sadly, the OP is just another American, who makes the rest of us look intolerant.

Wait, what? If I don't support a team, I'm not a true sports fan? I would think that not having a specific team would actually make you a supporter of the sport itself.

How does not having a favorite team make you a "real" supporter of the sport? I mean yeah, you can love the sport, but it's pretty obvious you'll have a specific team/person you cheer for. Just like art, etc etc.

Not exactly Dekuu. Being passionate about a sport in itself makes you a sports fan. You don't have to vouch for a specific team to make you a fan of soccer. If you vouch for a team you could as well be a fan of the team, not of the sport in general.

Boring is an opinion, and therefore is objective.

You may think it's boring, and your friends might think it's boring, but a lot of people think the opposite.

Don't try to assert opinions as facts

I watch college basketball, but I don't root for a specific team. That makes me a fan of the sport of college basketball, not a team who happens to play a sport.

That's not what I meant, probably wasn't clear enough.

I was replying to this specific sentence godmisht said:

Yeah, the concept of soccer MAY be considered boring, I mean, it's just 22 men running after a ball after all. The passion for a team is what really moves people. I'm talking about high level play of soccer, European, for instance.

You may not get this, but some people love the sport, and don't follow a team.

I get it, I just find it really boring. Someone can enjoy playing it...but not watching? There must be SOMEONE you have sympathy with at least...your country's team, someone!

Well, in College Basketball, I cannot stand 3 teams. So maybe I'm a fan of the other 100 teams?
