I think biggest perks for me about the 3DS-version is that it's more single-player-based instead of multiplayer, meaning I get to dwell to the game on my own pace and discover things about it all on my own. Also the onlines and so forth. But it feels still new to me about having a portable Smash - I wonder how to handle that when being off in my trips since I'm not too into CPU-fights nowadays - perhaps I fill in the content-side of the game and duke it out in online with my friends or worldwide.

I think Nintendo's decision was down to making money by releasing a 3DS Version or saving the Wii U by making it a Wii U exclusive. Choice number 1 was their decision.

More people are gonna buy the 3DS version over the Wii U version because it's 20 dollars cheaper, it's probably gonna have more content in it, it comes out earlier, and if they don't have a Wii U or 3DS the 3DS method is cheaper.

While I'm happy that it's going to sell on both consoles, the 3DS version is obviously gonna sell better and move more 3DS Units then the Wii U version, and they could have moved more Wii U's if it was a exclusive.

Yeah they shot themselves in the foot if they intended to make the Wii U more successful.

Honestly I consider Smash Wii U and 3DS to be two sides of the same coin...I feel that you need to own both to actually assert that you've fully experienced Smash 4.

I fully plan on having both for this reason.

Someone who only gets the Wii U version is going to miss out on on exclusive experiences only the 3DS version can provide.

The same goes for the opposite...if you only get the 3DS version there will always be a part of Smash 4 you will not have the opportunity to experience without the Wii U version.

If you really support Nintendo you'd get a Wii U when possible, it's their current flagship system and it needs all the support it can get.

Yeah I kinda feel sorry for the 3DS version, it won't get any attention after the release of the Wii U version.

It'll still get lots of attention in my house!

I honestly doubt the 3DS version will not get any attention when the Wii U version is released.
Both games are going to be played. It's Smash Bros. after all, so I don't think the 3DS version will not get any attention. The 3DS has a larger install base so that's enough for Smash Bros. 3DS to still be played even if the Wii U version is released.

This guy speaks the truth. For Smash Bros. 4, 3DS WILL have more buzz until the Wii U version comes out and even then amond the casual players will reign supreme.

The people who think Smash 3DS will be forgotten or less played once Smash Wii U is released are the epitome of delusional.

For each people who will buy and play Smash Wii U, at least three or more will be buying and playing Smash 3DS. There is absolutely no comparison.

  • I prefer the 3ds version mainly because I already had one laying around that I played Pokemon on. I am not sure if I want to buy a Wii U just to play a game I can buy for the 3ds I already have. I am sure there are a lot of others that are picking up the 3ds version for this same reason.
  • Smash Run. It looks pretty fun and will be a nice option to mix it up with your friends.
  • I am not sure if the team color outline thing is 3ds exclusive, but it will be awesome to finally play as your favorite color in team mode.
  • You know when you go to a tournament and you have to look through all those name tags to find yours? Not a problem for the 3ds version.
One thing I have been wondering since the custom specials are unlocked randomly by doing things such as smash run... will they be tradable between players? For example say I keep getting random specials I'm not interested in because I don't play the characters, but someone has a Zelda or Rosalina special move they are not using and I wanted to trade for it. I think it would be a cool option if we were allowed to trade special moves with others somehow.

That buzz will still continue even if the console version is out, that's for sure. This game will have competitive players too, and that's another good thing about the 3DS version.

You're right. More people will buy Smash 3DS because it costs less than the Wii U version. It's a full Smash Bros. game, which is enough of a reason for them to buy it. The online multiplayer will be stable as well, so that's another reason.

All you need is the sales figures for the platform to prove that. And we'll see some hard data next year to compare the sales. The Wii U version might have more detailed graphics but still the 3DS version will be more hyped overall (I don't expect the same to be true of SmashBoards).

Honestly, you're only lying to yourself if you think the 3DS is going to be the superior version of Smash. I'm positive Sakurai has been put through tons of pressure by Nintendo that Smash Wii U sells Wii U's where as the 3DS has a more than solid install base. He won't have to do as much for Smash 3DS to sell like hot cakes.

At the same time, I'm sure the 3DS version is going to be fun and feature filled. Maybe not as feature filled as Brawl due to the system's technical limits but still. Not only is the Wii U going to have Smash in glorious HD it also has the memory and specs to support things like smoother animations and better hit effects. I think the hit effects in the 3DS version just don't look as cool as they do in the Wii U version but that's just my opinion.

I'm getting both either way. I love Smash. Absolutely adore the franchise and I love my 3DS. Though I can play both on the go, it is more convenient to carry my 3DS around then my Wii U. As a Pokemon fan, it wouldn't be the first time I bought the "same" game twice.

I see it as this... The Wii U version is going to be the more technically stronger version, maybe even more feature rich. But the 3DS version will be a great game with a guaranteed huge install base you can take just about anywhere.

Not only will the Wii U one be better graphically, but I'd wager it'll have modes that haven't even been mentioned yet. That's pretty exciting to think about!

I think both versions will have their own things worth being excited about. I think Sakurai is trying his best to keep one from being better then the other in terms of content whenever possible.

no one said that but theres people who dont have a wii u or the money to spend on getting one so it would be more popular among them and theres people who like the 3ds version better

Oh, and some characters look way better in the 3DS version. Just compare 3DS Toon Link to Wii U toon Link. The latter's hair looks like 3 giant bananas. No detail at all. Little Mac looks better too in the 3DS version. And who the f*** cares wbout HD in Smash? When you play it on a actual 3DS, it looks as good as HD. I can play wherever I want too. Can I do that with a Wii U? NO. And "couch multiplayer on Wii u" I can play on my couch with friends on their 3DS and still have a good time. "wii u version will have more content" How the **** do you know this?

I'm here to argue my case for Super Smash Bros. for 3DS, which many people seem to be writing off as the inferior version. Now, I'm not asking why people hate it - we already have a thread for that (multiple, even). I'm here to bring a case to this game. It may be long-winded, so bear with me.

Here's a short list of why I think it will not be inferior:
  1. Mobility: For a long time Smashers have enjoyed playing their game, but many younger were limited by being dragged around with their parents and the more sophisticated audience were bound with little time to stop and play on a home console, between work, school, and relationships. With Super Smash Bros. for 3DS, you can take your game anywhere! It's more convenient and easier to focus with the screen closer and despited the smaller screen and lesser graphics IN MY OPINION the mobility completely makes up for that. Speaking of graphics...
  2. More Graphical Options: The thing about this game that hangs people up is the graphical limitations brought by the lackluster Nintendo 3DS screens. However, the game manages to look excellent taped and live. You can adjust the thickness of the lines around it from thick to none, allowing for many options for your play style and preferences. Additionally, the outlines are the perfect remedy for smaller screens, allowing you to distinguish characters better.
  3. Release Date & Cost: It's no secret that for 3DS is cheaper and comes out earlier. For people on a budget, this makes Super Smash Bros. for 3DS a better choice. You can play Smash before Wii U-ers and for a lower cost.
  4. Multiplayer: Everyone who is a Smash Fan (mostly) knows that the 3DS is selling waaaaaaay better than the Wii U. It's also logical to think that more people would buy the 3DS version, no? This will ensure that the online multiplayer will be of varied skill levels and more players allow you to not worry about waiting forever to join that one game that needs to finish. Also, as for local multiplayer (also online, I suppose) it would be logical to also think people around you would have for 3DS over for Wii U, allowing for more multiplayer options. Bringing me to my final listed (but not final) point...
  5. SMASH RUN!!!!!!: If anyone needs a reason to prefer Smash Bros. for 3DS, show 'em Smash Run. It's fresh, it's new, it's innovative - and it feels natural and makes sense.

in my opinion anything you can play on the crapper is the best ;)

I imagine the 3ds version's only weak points are going to be graphics (and I'm really okay with that), controls (and I'm sure they will become second nature by the end of day one) and wireless options (but I could be wrong on this one). While those three are pretty big deals to some, it should be noted that core gameplay appears to be the same on each, and 3ds has a few options that the Wii u may be lacking, such as everyone's favorite mode, smash run. And portability. 3ds got portability fo daaaaayz. That is, in my opinion, the best feature about sm4sh 3ds. I'm on the go a lot, and this will help me kill ALLLL the time.

I think a fair observation is that 3ds seems to be aimed more towards casual play, whist wii u is more towards tourney type play. and I guess that's been noted a few times, but I agree with that train of thought. choo choo.

I still think that the main reason the 3DS version will still be popular is because the 3DS currently has a better library, and is thus a more common purchase, than a U.

I know one friend who is sure it won't be enjoyable on the 3DS, and the rest of my friends and I just laugh at him.

If I had a U, I'd get it and play it on both. And I imagine that's what it will boil down to for most people: which system you already have, and if getting the other is worth it to you.

Plus, we've not gotten any sort of confirmation that the 3DS version will have more content. That would make zero sense. Odds are the U exclusives are still under wraps and will be revealed/elaborated on later.

Really good points for the 3DS version. I'm totally getting both. I especially like the idea of being able to play with people who own either version.

Well, at the very least, we know that it will contain a lot more music, since the 3DS version will only contain two tracks to a stage, like Melee. Likewise, it's pretty logical to assume that the rest of the game, aside from the characters, will have more content on the Wii U side. It is the HD console, and as I said, we already know that they're fully willing to take advantage of that with the amount of music.

With that said, I certainly look forward to the Wii U version more. I always wanted a portable SSB, though, and I will be picking up SSB3DS day one.

Pretty much how I feel. People just need to get over the button layout being different from the Gamecube Controller and its just as viable to be competitive. It has essentially the same Gameplay so the only thing stopping it from being just as competitive would be the Community itself.

I think people will get used to it. It's just a matter of time, the gameplay is already fine like you said. I'm sure the 3DS community will do their best to make the game as competitive as possible.

Same here. When I played it at the Best Buy event, it felt simultaneously familiar and awkward, since it was the same control scheme but the button layout was different. I have no doubts I'll get used to it..which would also help me get used to playing it with the Gamepad or Wii U Pro Controller if I needed to, since the Button Layout is the same on those systems.

Yeah, the controls will be fine. That works too.
The 3DS' button layout is similar to those, but it feels like its own.

I think saying one version being more superior is clearly an opinion.
Ya know, you're right. It is opinion. I'm not knocking anyone who wants the 3DS version because I PLAN TO GET BOTH!

All I'm saying is it will be nice to see Smash Brothers in HD on the Wii U. Not necessary, but nice. I still break out my Wii to play Smash 64 on Virtual Console at times so "OMG 1080P" isn't something I'll praise to the heavens but I can't deny given the chance it will be nice to see Link slashing foes in 1080p at 60fps.

Another thing good about the Wii U version is that EVERYTHING will be 60fps, where as on the 3DS Sakurai said certain elements like assist trophies are only 30fps because of power limits on the 3DS.

I can't say for sure that the Wii U version is going to have more content then the 3DS version but lets look at the scenario: Nintend mentioned two important titles for 2014 to push sales of the Wii U. They where Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Brothers Wii U. With that I can only speculate that the reason the Wii U version is taking longer is because it's generally more time consuming to develope for an HD console then it is a hand held and NINTENDO PUT THE PRESSURE ON SMASH WII U TO SELL CONSOLES.

I'm willing to admit I could be wrong. Wii U Smash < 3DS Smash could be the reality in the future. But considering how the console war is going and Smash Wii U is the title they named to push hardware sales of the Wii U I think it's fair to suggest the Wii U version is going to get more development attention and investment. That could translate to a superior product on the Wii U.

Again, I could be wrong and I'm willing to accept that.

I could also argue that Smash Wii has more controller options then the 3DS, and if you don't mind SMashing with the gamepad, it's nearly as portable. You don't need a T.V. to play most Wii U games. I've played Wind Waker HD, Resident Evil, and Pikmin away from my home. You just need a power source to plug into.

I plan on getting both but just looking at the situation my opinion is Smash Wii U will be the better game.

I remember watching a Xanadu steam is there was a player using Wii Mote and Nunchuck. Hell, not everyone uses Fighting Sticks for Tekken and Street Fighter. Some people use game pads and others even use the weir HitBox thing.

Control Setup/Controller will always be a personal preference and the only thing that makes a certail controller superior then the other is how comfortable the player is with it. If Daigo enjoyed game pad more the arcade stick I'm sure he would use it.

That and I'm really hoping for Circle Pad Pro (XL) support for it...like most others are.

I know you were getting both versions, I'm just saying that one version being more superior is an opinion.
Well...yeah. LoL You are right, good sir.

The GamePad is not "nearly as portable". It's a 30 feet range (not including walls and other obstacles) at the farthest from a console with cables and such that must be plugged into a wall at all times. The 3DS version's superiority is clearly an opinion and the people who have it are not "lying to themselves".

Well of course they'd mention Super Smash Bros. for Wii U as an important title to help push Wii U sales, but that doesn't mean anything in regards to the Nintendo 3DS version. The game could be Super Smash Bros. Brawl + some new characters & stages and it would still help push Wii U sales, so I don't think they are going to try to purposely make it superior to the Nintendo 3DS version.

The reason it is taking longer then the Nintendo 3DS is for 2 main reasons. They logically have to test every character on the Nintendo 3DS first to make sure the system can handle them. I recall Sakurai mentioned it had trouble with team based characters such as Ice Climbers and Rosalina, though due to the introduction of the latter, it seems they solved said issues, but the fact remains they wouldn't develop it first on Wii U just for it to end up being a waste of time, so they'd logically create them on the 3DS first, get them working, and then work on the Wii U version of that character afterwards. The limitations may also have something to do with the splitting up of Transformation characters..but it also may not have anything to do with it..I don't know. What I am saying though is that developing the games in this fashion would logically make the Nintendo 3DS version the first one to be finished.
I also suspect that they knew that the Wii U version was the one more people were looking forward too and wanted to sell more Nintendo 3DS versions as well, so they decided to release them separately in this fashion so that Hardcore Smashers would buy the 3DS version to get their Smash Fix before the Wii U version dropped when they may not have even considered buying the 3DS version prior.

I also can't feel Sakurai would purposely try to create one version Superior to the Other, it just doesn't fit his development style nor does it seem to fit him to be pushed around to do so.

I prefer Smash 3ds for a lot of reasons.

First off, the 3ds is one of my favorite systems ever at the moment. It's funny, never mind the portable experience, (though that certainly helps), I have both my wii u and 3ds next to me. I would much rather play my 3ds in my bed. The 3ds is just so nice to hold and it's also much easier to take a break.

Second off, the stages are some of my favorites in the series so far. We got Reset Bomb Forest, (which is my favorite chapter in Kid Icarus Uprising), we got a gen 5 Pokémon stage, Tortimer island, Arena Ferox, and a whole set of nice looking stages. <3

Third off, Smash run. You guys don't know how much I played City Trial. Just the frantic nature of it, along with surprise events that keep you on your toes while changing up gameplay. The only thing that will complete this is if their is a checklist for it. <3

Now, I'm not going to say one is superior to the other. They both offer an experience that differ for each person. I'm still going to get the wii u version. I'm probably going to love it as well. I just prefer the 3ds version.

I prefer Smash 3DS because the Wii U hasn't had any games I've wanted, while the 3DS has some gems that are great for me. With Hyrule Warriors that makes two games on the Wii U I would actually want, so if they manage a third at some point I may break down and get it then.

Also, 3DS is likely to be more Competitive internationally than Wii U. Japan prefers handhelds to the console as it is.

This is true. Most people will play on Smash 3DS, whether it be casual or competitive, and as I said before, the reason why this will happen is because of the larger install base the 3DS has.
Seeing competitive Smash 3DS matches would be cool, too.

Being able to play Smash anywhere I want is why I prefer the 3DS version.
