Smash 3DS Why I Prefer Super Smash Bros. for 3DS

I'm here to argue my case for Super Smash Bros. for 3DS, which many people seem to be writing off as the inferior version. Now, I'm not asking why people hate it - we already have a thread for that (multiple, even). I'm here to bring a case to this game. It may be long-winded, so bear with me.

Here's a short list of why I think it will not be inferior:
  1. Mobility: For a long time Smashers have enjoyed playing their game, but many younger were limited by being dragged around with their parents and the more sophisticated audience were bound with little time to stop and play on a home console, between work, school, and relationships. With Super Smash Bros. for 3DS, you can take your game anywhere! It's more convenient and easier to focus with the screen closer and despited the smaller screen and lesser graphics IN MY OPINION the mobility completely makes up for that. Speaking of graphics...
  2. More Graphical Options: The thing about this game that hangs people up is the graphical limitations brought by the lackluster Nintendo 3DS screens. However, the game manages to look excellent taped and live. You can adjust the thickness of the lines around it from thick to none, allowing for many options for your play style and preferences. Additionally, the outlines are the perfect remedy for smaller screens, allowing you to distinguish characters better.
  3. Release Date & Cost: It's no secret that for 3DS is cheaper and comes out earlier. For people on a budget, this makes Super Smash Bros. for 3DS a better choice. You can play Smash before Wii U-ers and for a lower cost.
  4. Multiplayer: Everyone who is a Smash Fan (mostly) knows that the 3DS is selling waaaaaaay better than the Wii U. It's also logical to think that more people would buy the 3DS version, no? This will ensure that the online multiplayer will be of varied skill levels and more players allow you to not worry about waiting forever to join that one game that needs to finish. Also, as for local multiplayer (also online, I suppose) it would be logical to also think people around you would have for 3DS over for Wii U, allowing for more multiplayer options. Bringing me to my final listed (but not final) point...
  5. SMASH RUN!!!!!!: If anyone needs a reason to prefer Smash Bros. for 3DS, show 'em Smash Run. It's fresh, it's new, it's innovative - and it feels natural and makes sense.

I agree with all of this, in the end tthey're the same game but with something special about them.

Other than the multiplayer(you only need 1 Wii U to play instead of multiple 3DS' per person), I gotta agree. The 3DS will surely have something special about it. In the end though, I'm too much of a big-screen guy and love the controller options. Staring at the tiny 3DS screen isn't nearly as engaging, and just doesn't suck me into the game as well.

Definitely agree with all of your points. I am personally looking forward to the Wii U version a bit more right now though, because of the HD graphics and the Amiibos (though I'm sure the 3DS version will be compatible with those when that peripheral comes out next year). Plus, I have the bonus of being able to record footage on the Wii U version with my Elgato, while getting a 3DS capture card is an uncomfortable proposition due to the extremely expensive cost and underground nature of getting one. The Wii U version also has a lot more mystery behind it right now.

I'm still really hyped for the 3DS version though, especially Smash Run.

I'm more interested in the 3DS version due to most of my friends having the 3DS as well plus having a portable Smash game has been something i've always wanted so i'm glad it's happening.

Actually, I feel it's the opposite; they are different games sharing the same characters.
I meant the same characters, same gameplay, same online with them being the same game. The specialties for the 3DS is the exclusive mode Smash Run, the stages, release date, first handheld Smash Bros and 3D(sorry if I confused you with the comment)

I'm just afraid of the fact that it's gonna give me carpal tunnel like Mario Kart 7 and Kid Icarus: Uprising give me.

I would not worry about that too much, to mitigate that detrimental problem, one only needs to take continuous breaks and avoid playing for a long duration. :dazwa:

Any 3DS tournament will also run WAY faster since everyone has their own console. Friendlies will be insanely easy as well. PLUS any kind of pre game customization will we WAY easier for us having our own consoles. 3DS smash has a LOT going for it!

That may be true, but I can see tech issues with running/streaming Sm4sh on the 3DS. Maybe it's just me though? Anywhom, I've been clamoring for a handheld smash experience since at least the Brawl days. I'm surprised Sakurai and his crew didn't try to attempt a DS version during Brawl's development, but perhaps Sak felt that the DS's tech was too limiting for a complex game like smash at the time?

I think I'm more hyped for the Wii U version, but I agree with all of the points above. 3DS will be amazing and has lots going for it.

I'm absolutely picking up both versions as there's no indication the 3DS version will be inferior, but what blows my mind with the 3DS version is that within the year there will be kids huddled together on playgrounds playing SMASH BROTHERS. HOW FREAKING AMAZING IS THAT?! If I had portable smash bros. growing up it would've been the most magical thing I possessed, and every day at school would have been another opportunity to kick someone's butt. Forget pokemon battles.

Well put, opening post!

Personally, the exclusive stages are another reason to get it. They offer something unique and fun.

I don't prefer one over the other. I love both. Though I will admit that playing Smash on the go is freaking amazing in hindsight.

I agree with everything you said. IMO Smash should be on every handheld from now on. Just like Sakurai stated, you can do so many things with it due to having your own screen.

I plan to get SSB4 (3DS) only, because my preferred method of gaming is on a handheld system. I've wanted to see SSB on a system like this for a very long time now, and it seem that 15 years of waiting finally paid off.

The Wii U version seems interesting, but there really isn't any incentive for me to get the same game twice.

No c-stick is pretty dumb.. I can't up air (and other attacks) as easily and I will do a double jump accidentally every time instead. :(

There will be control options to turn off tap jumping so up won't make you jump. We're also crossing our fingers for Circle pad Pro support so we'll be able to have that C-stick. So don't fret :)

Portability is more than enough for me, Smash is the perfect game to have on the run, I always carry my 3DS everywhere I go, but the only games I have that I can just turn on for a quick time killer while on the bus, or waiting for my pizza to get cooked, are Street Fighter and Mario Kart. Street Fighter is nice, but it gets old quickly when you don't have anyone to play with, and the arcade mode will only get you so far, and Mario Kart... It's just not enough on it's own, you know? Every other game have something to them that prevent me from playing them casually, Fire Emblem? Need a bit more dedication, and I'll be missing on the music and sound if I play here, same goes for Zelda, Kid Icarus has long stages so that's a no, Pokémon is ****ing Pokémon, can't really play it for a few minutes, and I've played Mario 3D Land to death already.

Instead, playing for some Smash matches while waiting for my food on lunch breaks will be ****ing perfect, Smash has a lot of things to do, and except for a couple of single-player modes (like classic and all-star) they can all be played quickly without any sort of investment.

Not to mention that there's plenty of guys at my job with 3DS that are obviously looking forward to the game as well, so I won't even be playing by myself!

Despite the 3DS's exclusive features we've only seen one thing for Wii U - Amiibo...

Good post and I agree people should not write it off as the inferior version. I plan to buy both versions actually.

I will as well, but I expect to like the 3DS version more and spend more time on it (I go everywhere everyday, a lot of on-the-road).

  • I prefer the 3ds version mainly because I already had one laying around that I played Pokemon on. I am not sure if I want to buy a Wii U just to play a game I can buy for the 3ds I already have. I am sure there are a lot of others that are picking up the 3ds version for this same reason.
  • Smash Run. It looks pretty fun and will be a nice option to mix it up with your friends.
  • I am not sure if the team color outline thing is 3ds exclusive, but it will be awesome to finally play as your favorite color in team mode.
  • You know when you go to a tournament and you have to look through all those name tags to find yours? Not a problem for the 3ds version.
One thing I have been wondering since the custom specials are unlocked randomly by doing things such as smash run... will they be tradable between players? For example say I keep getting random specials I'm not interested in because I don't play the characters, but someone has a Zelda or Rosalina special move they are not using and I wanted to trade for it. I think it would be a cool option if we were allowed to trade special moves with others somehow.

Because it doesn't show a number next to special moves I think they'll be permanent unlocks that you can't get again. But if they could stack in number it'd make unlocking all moves very lengthy indeed, especially since you don't get the rare custom move item every run.

Well, you need more controllers for the Wii U as well

Obviously they're not going to show off the Wii U's exclusive features when the 3DS version is about to be released, it's their job to hype up the 3DS version right now so it'd be stupid if they took the spotlight off of it, especially if the Wii U's exclusive mode turns out to be amazing.
