Why do you host a tourney?

After going to champ's tourney this weekend, I started wondering why almost no one came. His tournies are what everyone should hope for in a tourney, he is guaranteeing us 10 setups, 10 full setups. No one else in so cal can even come close to offering that ever. He's also in the middle of the so cal community for the most part. He is closer to the LA/hollywood etc smashers than stab's tournies by a good amount I'm sure. Hell it takes me about the same time to get to either champ's or stab's.

With so many setups and a semi central location, why does he not get a better turnout?

It's understandable that not every person can go to every single tourney, especially in so cal since there are tournies pretty much every weekend, sometimes 2 a weekend (ie this coming up week). I love going to every tourney I can, but with the kind of turnout that happened last time, it makes me not want to go anymore. There is always talk of how so cal has too many tournies, and it's true. All that ever happens, though, is we complain and nothing changes, so instead of complaining, I am going to ask "Why do you host a tourney?" This question goes out to all of you who are currently hosting tournies or ever hosted a tourney. To those of you who stopped hosting, why did you stop? Whether you held a series for a long time (connor) or even just one random tourney, I'd like to know why you held that/those tourney/s.

I know the answer as to why some people host, but I think you should share with the community why you choose to host tournies (even if you already have done so before). The only tourney that everyone knows the reason behind is the arcadian tourney. Kira has made it clear why he hosts those tournies, but if he'd like to say more, I'd still be glad to hear it.

People I'd really like to hear from

Champ- about your current biweeklies
Stab
Azn lep
Connor
Festizzio
J666

I feel like a lot of names are escaping me right now, but please, even if you just hosted one tourney, tell us why.

Well I hosted one successful tournamenthttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0VYjjXSxW0Y, which had a good turnout. I think the reason It had a good turnout was that at the time there were much less tournaments at the time.

0.Not enough ranked player attendance. More people would go to tournaments if there was more hype from ranked players. The more ranked players posting in the thread and going= more arcadians, which in turn equals a big turnout.

1.Bi-weekly's, people take advantage that theres always a tournament every other week.

2.The bi-weekly isn't strictly melee only, which drops the attendance of melee players (the only people who show) -This fixes the bi-weekly problem since melee players are much more active then brawl players. (I think)

3. Busy johns/no rides. Some times people can't make it, yep really.

The main reason I decided to host my own tournament was for fun. I always liked tournaments that would end into a smashfest after, seems like that was how most of the tournaments went during summer of 08' when I was really active.

ride johns seem to be a big factor
I was going to get a ride from stab, but then he wasn't able to go because his parents would not want to drive him to long beach two weeks in a row.

As for why:

I like to co-host with Stab because I always go out to other areas to see people and play in tournaments,
and it's nice to have other people come out in my area to play.

I too feel like there are too many tournaments though, making people okay with missing one, and they'll just go to the next one.

If there are tournaments less often, people will make sure not to miss them, having higher turnouts, more hype, more fun.

more fun.
I think tournament hosts should highlight on this aspect of tournaments. Such as crews after tournaments or something similar that would bring the community together as a whole. The more fun that people have = the more players that will attend a follow-up tournament. Also I think crews help noobs/people who don't interact with everyone at tournaments feel more connected with the community. Making noobs feel welcome is key for successful tournaments.

Yeah I have to agree with Marthpwnzer. Fun is a huge reason why I go to tournaments(crews are really awesome). I don't think that Champ's tournaments are really that fun since the first one I went to I had to leave before 8 which I thought was really early. Usually I like to stay until 10, so that's two hours of lost fun. I want to play maylay all daylay, and leaving at 7:30 is not all daylay.

I hosted tournaments because it was always fun to have a lot of the community at my house. Back then there was like a smallll chance of a tournament-free weekend so I would choose any free weekend that wasn't occupied. I mostly did it for fun and it was also nice because I didn't have to go anywhere since it was at my house. I always like to compete and most of the PR would usually be there but I always notice a lack of attendance in arcadians. I hosted kinda consistently for like a year and eventually at my last hosted tournament, I was just sick of how there would be almost all of the PR people (when it was top 10) and then like 5 arcadians. So I guess I just stopped because no one came anymore besides the regulars (Lovage, S2J, Hugo, Lucky, etc.).

I think we should just not have a tournament for a long time. This might have people appreciate tournaments more and not just think "oh I'll just go to the next one next weekend"

I think you're on the right track, but this isn't quite the right question to be asking. We know why people host tournaments (either to provide for the community aka for fun, to make some cash, or both). What you want to be asking is why people don't go to tournaments when they have every benefit- they are run well, they have setups, they are affordable, and they are close by.

And that's a question I'd rather not answer on Smashboards. If you want to know you can just ask me in person.

Crews are my favorite for this exact reason. Noobs will definitely stop going to tournaments if they just go 0-2 and then go home before the tournament even ends, just because they lost. I embrace/encourage/teach every single noob I play lol.

Back when I was a noob I remember it felt really cool that Mango picked me to be on his crew and cheered for me and gave me tips. Noobs need that motivation booster! :bee:

There are just too many tournies here in SoCal! Anyone would get tired of playing the same people! I think we should cut the number of tournies here in SoCal since it might motivated people to try harder every time they play, since next tourny would be weeks apart instead of the following weekend! If Champs 2GG tournies were every other month, people would really start to show up!

i wouldn't call champs tourneys centrally localized at all D:
Ok then what is centrally localized? If SD wanted to come it'd probably take them about an hour and 15 to get there, and you 805 people idk but it's probably about the same maybe a little longer. For where the bulk of the community is I think it is central enough considering you'll never be able to find the most middle point and just host tournies there.

And this question has more of a point to it, obviously concerning less tournies, but as I was thinking about it, I really started to wonder why does each person decide to host a tourney. I'm sure everyone has their own reasons and so i'm curious as to why each person decided to host tournies

I'll give you a brief answer for NCT and 2GG. I might write the reason why I host the tourney but for now I'll write why NCT and 2GG exist.

NCT - Back in 06, Neal and I wanted to host a tournament. Non profit and for the community. This was call Champ Combo. Ever since then, we hosted about 5 NCT and we have never made any profit for it at all. First one had no venue fee. SCC was sponsor by MLG. MJ's venue fee was collected by Luigi's Church, Pat' House was use to buy all those free drinks and campfire stuff, and NSH was collected by the gymnastic club. We also revived NCT because Melee was decaying last year. We had to step it up and revive west coast melee. I think we did a great job so I'm glad of that. Also, NCT tourneys are always dedicated to some1 for making an impact to SoCal community.

2GG -This is also non profit. Gymnastic club collects all the money so whatever. I started it because Melee didn't have a lot of tourney back then in early 2010 still. I also always tell people how I want to start something for the Long Beach area cause we never had a scene before. So I pull a lot of string and favors to start 2GG and try to make it happen. 2gg is always for the community which is why we have 2gGrant and me asking my friends for 10 set ups. As long as somebody is happy at my tourney, then I did my job.

If there is "too many tourney" then I guess I did my job and it's time for me to leave. I accomplish my job of bringing back melee through big tourneys and being faithful to the community.

Maybe Atlus is right, I should just go back to only hosting major melee tourneys like back then. Maybe I'm just not that good at doing triweeklies.

as for 8pm, not to be mean but when the tournament starts at 10am and ends at 8pm. That's 10 hours. I always have friendlies TV throughout the whole tournament. The tournament also ends before 5pm usually. So yeah, I know 8pm is "early" for you guys but I don't want to stay till 10pm. That's late for me since I'm old now.

so yeah, that's why NCT and 2GG exist.

yeah i suggested this a while ago

tournament oversaturation = low attendance and low motivation to do well (why work your hardest if there's another tourny against the same people next saturday?)

Originally, I wanted to host a tourney just to see what it was like. Me and the rest of Grev went to serious lengths to make this tourney stand out and make it a blast for everyone. At the time I couldn't travel much so having a tourney close to home would really help me (and the rest of Grev who don't ever travel). Not only that, but we had two recording setups and got everyone we knew to hype it. Basically the outcome we were looking for was everyone who went to think "Dang, that tourney *****!".

Fast-forward to now. I've pretty much got the art of hosting locals down and the tournament series has been steadily improving since Grev III (except the turnout for the last two but that's because of badly chosen dates). Also, the venue is free so I don't plan on stopping so long as it helps the community. :)

My current goal is to make the Grev series well-established to the point where I know the turnout will be good every time (like the UCSD tri-weeklies). I can only hope that Grev VIII will have a good turnout because of how much notice I gave and Grev IX (Early July) will have a good turnout because Tec0 is coming.

if i lost, i would get another chance next week
if i won, i'd make sure that i'd be ahead on wins so i wouldnt let them beat me the next tourney

i rarely miss a norcal tourney cuz we barely have any, but i would go to as many as i could if we had hella.....you guys are lucky
