Why do people like MOTHER2/Earthbound?

I can't fathom how people enjoy this! The plot is generic, bland, and a poor attempt at humor, the combat system is below sub-par, the character development is little-none, and you play the whole game to abort some weird thing.

I don't know how good MOTHER 3 or MOTHER 1 are (I'm assuming 1 is crappier than 2 though), but I can't stand this game. I find it astonishing that it has such a following!

Even though I love mother 2 (along with every other Mother game), the game most definitely wont appeal to everyone. Most of what gave Mother 2 it's fanbase was it's originality, charm, humor, trippy style, and fun gameplay.

However, if you aren't a fan of typical RPGs(admittedly, Mother 2 doesn't exactly contribute anything original, gameplay-wise) or wacky japanese humor, then you most likely wont enjoy it.

and as for your last statement, I'd say Mother 1 is a much, much harder and slightly less deep version of Mother 2, but with a better storyline.(IMO)

Mother 3 however, in my opinion, is much, MUCH more improved over Mother 2. It has a better storyline, and much better gameplay.(Including an awesome rhythm-based attacking system.) I'd say it's a better experience than Mother 1 and 2, but is somewhat less humorous and wacky than it's predecessors.

Well, I'm looking forwards to that team of translators that are translating MOTHER 3. I think I'd prefer that due to the more dark theme. It's a shame that Claus moveset threads prior to Brawl's release ruined the whole plot for me!

This is the reason Earthbound didn't sell well in america or europe. People need an open mind to play.

The mother series isn't for everyone; either people follow it like a homing missile or think it's worse than a plague. Earthbound is famous for breaking out of the standard RPG formula. Back in the day, Earthbound was new ground in the U.S. (not today). It's an RPG ment more for everyone; if you like the formula of Final Fantasy or like tough games, Earthbound (and Mother 1) will probably not be your cup of tea. I like the series because it's simple enough to pick up and play, but hard enough to keep you interested. I also like the setting and it has a lot of charm. What holds me back from being the best game ever are the points where the developers tried to hard to be obscure and different (Master Belch in particular).

Mother 3 is a lot different than the first two of the series. The gameplay is a lot deeper, the plot is darker, and followes a much different path than the rest of the series. I haven't played M3 yet (waiting for Starmen.net fan translation), but it takes some of the out of place aspects of Earthbound and puts them in a more mature and deep tale.

There is no need for an open mind. The game isn't that off the wall. It's the fact that it's so conventional that is what turned me off. The worst part about it is the battle system.

Agree on that.
I have played the Final Fantasy games, but I enjoyed the Earthbound/MOTHER series as well from the start till the end.It was easy enough for me to get hooked on that back then.I'm still playing Eartbound now to remember it.I'm thinking about starting over MOTHER 3 when Starmen.net's translation is released.Almost finished!:joyful:

How can you post a thread like this?
You have no real taste for gaming.
It may not be the coolest game series, but I just don't see how it sucks.
You should be able to easily follow a storyline if you actually think about what is happening.
Even with Subspace Emissary, I was barely off.
I just didn't know about the Isle of the Ancients.
And that can't really be helped.
Emotions can't necessarily tell a story with ease.

But Earthbound is a good game series, and I haven't even played it.
You want a sucky game, play GTA.
Same crap each game, and the content gets worse with every new game.
It's pitiful.

I can't tell you the reason I like it, really. I can give the rason it's hated/unknown though.
The reason it's relatively unheard of if not for Smash Bros. is because American's think that Final Fantasy is the best RPG series ever and always compare every RPG to FF, especially FF VII, "the gaming masterpiece crafted by god himself so perfect in every way", no matter how different. I know, normally this would show one why every other RPG game ever made is better than the ****-fest that is FF VII, but you know, generic American gamers :/

But Earthbound is a good game series, and I haven't even played it.
In a way, I hate Smash Bros for brining over earthbound. If not for that, then we wouldn't have so many posers running around saying how much they like it without playing it for more than half an hour on an emulator. Ditto for haters.

Thanks, but no thanks.
I used to hate EarthBound. The first time I played it I got to Buzz Buzz, and stopped, and thought that EarthBound was the crappiest, stupidest game ever. I thought the game was a complete failure, but one day I ran into it again without trying to. I was really bored one day, and I downloaded the game again because I didn't remember the name of the game before. If I had known I probably wouldn't have gotten it. This time I gave the game a chance. I played from beginning to end, and I loved it! Now I own my own EarthBound cartridge, which I would never sell. I love the Mother series more than any other series. I love the music, enemies, characters, atmosphere just about everything.
