Yes, exactly. I didn't know if he would be doing something like let's say Zelda home console stage, Zelda handheld equivalent. Use music from this game here, that game there. I hope he switches it up. He has said he wants to get more retro if I remember correctly, maybe it's possible we'll see things from older handhelds like Link's Awakening, Oracle of Ages, the first Mario & Luigi games, or Metroid II, even.
Well, he said the Wii U version is likelier to have stages from console games, and the 3DS is likelier to have handheld stages, in general. Now I dunno what that means for, say, Animal Crossing, where the only feasible stage is probably Smashville 2 or something, but it does mean that for, say, Zelda, we have Skyloft on Wii U and Gerudo Valley (OoT3D) and the Spirit Train on 3DS. I also wonder about stuff such as Wii Fit, which has never been on a handheld.

There really isn't an equivalent to Wii Fit on a handheld besides something like Personal Trainer: Walking or games of the like. I could see something like Brain Age and that big head being a stage, or the exercises that take place over those games being gimmicks/hazards in those stages. I'd love to see another kind of dynamic stage like PokeFloats, which a game like Tetris could easily mimic. Animal Crossing: New Leaf is the most recent handheld, and I think City Folk is the most recent home console one...I could see them playing up the city theme for WiiU, but I don't know what I would see in the New Leaf equivalent, besides the mayor's assistant, Isabelle. Maybe the New Leaf stage could have some kind of changing dynamic like Melee's Pokemon stadium, but with buildings and structures you can make in that game being built and then destructed on set time intervals.

Yeah, the Wii U AC stage seems to involve the city for sure...oooh, maybe the 3DS one will have the island from New Leaf!
I really want a Tetris stage in the next Smash. There's a pretty good one on the Brawl Vault, but sadly the blocks don't actually crush the fighters.

There is? I'm not familiar...I just started Melee again because I got sick of reading about Biochemistry and endocrinology all the live long day haha. I shouldn't even be playing it now! Do the Tetriminos at least Meteor Smash players? That could be interesting. Plus, if they did end up doing a Tetris stage, they could do it based on the EXCELLENT Tetris DS released around 2008. It's also very retro.

Sorry, are you familiar with the Brawl hacking scene at all? The Brawl Vault is a huge collection of hacks--stages, character costumes, music, and lots more--that you can put into a copy of Brawl. So someone made a custom Tetris stage, which is very well made, but they didn't have a way to make the blocks really interact with players from the bottom. Presumably an official Smash stage based on Tetris would crush and/or meteor smash the players, yeah.

If they didn't want to license a Tetris stage, they could also use something like Doctor Mario or Yoshi's Cookie, one of Nintendo's own tile matching games.

Yes I am, actually, but it's been a while since I refreshed myself on it. I do know of Project M at the very least! I kind of recall hearing about the Vault now--the last time I was on here, I think it was when people were literally just beginning on making new alternate costumes. And now people can make whole new movesets for whole new characters; I saw a Cloud (FFVII) display on YouTube that was pretty impressive.

Aside from that, a Dr. Mario stage would be great! Yoshi's Cookie would be good too. I would be absolutely fine not seeing any New Super Mario Bros. stuff, but I feel like it may sneak its way in there.

There was some discussion about how many Pokemon (out of Pokeballs) on screen the 3DS could handle processing-wise. Do you think this would be a major issue? I know it's comparable to the Wii, and a little lag is understandable, but I really hope it wouldn't be limited to only 2 Pokeball-spawned Pokemon on the screen at the same time.

Yeah, Project M is wonderful. A lot of Brawl Vault content is really bad, but a lot of it is good too!

Heh, that wouldn't really end up affecting me, since I play without items. :p But if it's a problem, I assume the 3DS version could limit the amount of Pokémon or ATs, or even just make it so that if one is already in play, no more will drop until it despawns.

If they think that the 3ds version might hold back the wii u version due to storage they could divide the 3ds version into 2 or possibly more cartridges.

People hate on Smash 4 3DS? Why? Frankly, I've been wanting a portable Smash Bros game since I was like, eight.
I think it's more because you can't play with those who are on the WIiU version and it's a bit difficult to play competitively with the 3ds (especially with the trigger buttons. My L+ R button's dead and I need to get it fixed after forking up 30$)

I do wonder how they will compensate for the lack of "Z" on the 3DS for grabbing. Maybe R will be for sheilding and air dodges while L is for grabbing (vice versa)?

Maybe there's something with the touchpad.

That could be. Something like:

| GRAB 1 2 3 4 GRAB |

With 1, 2, 3, 4 being player's lives/percentages, and GRAB "buttons" (touch inputs) flanking either side? I'm sure Sakurai will have some control customization as seen in Brawl.

There's also possibility for customization. I can imagine X/Y default as one being for jumping, the other for grabbing. Hard to say.

Grab is going to be R/L + A, just like the console games. Seriously, I actually completely forgot that you could grab with Z until you mentioned it.

But the 3ds has really crappy trigger buttons.

I've never had an issue with the 3DS' shoulder buttons. Just don't be so forceful when you press them.

Granted, PS0 destroyed my DSi's shoulder buttons which is why I'm so cautious about the 3DS ones.

I think that the Circle Pro could be used like the C Stick, but the D-Pad could also be used in this way. It would be nuts if the D-Pad was for tilts and the Circle Pad was only for Smashes. That would be an interesting way to customize. I wasn't aware the Circle Pad Pro had a Z button, but how much is it usually? I currently don't own one.

I tried looking into the Circle Pad Pro, I do not think it is compatible with the 2DS, so I am SOL. I read that it is only compatible with like 8 games, I know not to trust the internet, but it seemed legit. Haha. They look to be about 30 dollars new.

That's why I wouldn't buy it haha. I always hated getting accessories that were specific to a handful of games unless they were super cheap or super awesome, or both. I feel like Sakurai would make controls specifically based on the 3DS itself, probably adding in additional ways to customize your play like in Brawl, where there were like three different controllers you could use haha.

It will certainly be interesting to see what people assign to what in any case. I'm sure the Wii U controller will have a variety of customization, and I wouldn't be surprised if Smash has that as well.

More importantly though, how does everyone think the 3DS will do under pressure in Wi-Fi? I feel like the Wii U would be able to handle online better, but I don't know all the specs. I hope it's much, much improved from Brawl.

Could the touch screen be used in any way? Like SSFIV, maybe touching a certain part can quickly launch a smash attack, similar to using the C stick?

There are a lot of 3DS games that can be played over wifi, and from what I understand it's generally a good experience, so I'm not worried about that aspect.

I bought one when they came out because monster hunter (which I'm waiting on 4 since I have ultimate on wii u) and I think the only game I own that uses it is Kid Icarus which I'm not left handed so I don't use it. It feels good, I wish it was used more. But yeah, limited use, but I think smash might use it.

For example, kid icarus is SUPER chaotic online. It's sorta like a 3-D smash bros in a very broad sense and it ran FINE on 3ds. I have crap internet and only played it in the first few months when the servers were full of people, I think smash will run well on it.

OoS grabbing is important but I would imagine it is more convenient to have grab assigned to a single button for regular grabbing and pivot grabbing.

The 3DS version's roster is a bit smaller than Melee's. That's all I can think of now.

Probably not. I think the touch screen will be used as a damage\HP count rather than a main control. Sakurai might do the same with the Wii U gamepad.

However, I think it's very possible for characters to have different sets of costumes based on the system. For example, Peach on Wii U would have designs reflecting recent Mario games like New Super Mario Bros. Whatever, or even retro console designs like her SMB2 outfit. 3DS Peach would have designs based more on the Mario & Luigi games or Super Mario 3D Land. Not the best example, as she looks the same nearly every time haha. But this could be remedied by referring to older, retro games which Sakurai has expressed interest in.

I don't think local multiplayer would be a problem, especially when it is most likely gonna be 1v1. A simple game like Smash shouldn't cause lag, unless you go with characters like IC's or Oimar and go in stages where a bunch of stuff happen.
Where a bunch of stuff happens...

Like, a smash game?
