Why can't I short hop

There is only one answer to that question, and it is so amazingly simple that I am sure you know it already: You haven't practiced enough.

Just use common sense people.

Shorthopping is one of the harder techs to get down. I suggest learning it with a character like Roy or Falco first. A character with a slow jump is easier to short hop with. Fox's jump is one of the fastest, making his short hop and wavedash much harder.

Also, don't do it like the person in the video. All you need to do is press the button faster (having your finger on the bottom edge and lightly pressing it is an easy way). Just don't slide it off like that because it makes it impossible to hit the other buttons. I doubt the video-maker can SHDL.

Practice.
Its harder than Roys SH but its easy once you practice.

Just try SHFFlin Nair and Dair and try it again and again out of a Dash

There is no trick to short hopping. Just let go of jump faster. You don't need to create a whole topic for something as simple as that. It's ridiculous, unnecessary, and a pain to have to answer the same question over and over again. I might add that he would have gotten the same answers by using the search function.

Yes you can, you just haven't practiced enough. Is that so hard to understand?

pretend the jump button is on fire!
or ur thumb has a thorn in it that all u can do is tap the button
"float like a buttafly, sting lika bee!"
just keep pressing that button till u get the short hop down. But don't practice way too long, or ure muscle memory gets jacked up and u'll have frustration urination.
Don't think abut smashing the button either, just tap tap tap tap tap as lightly as possible.

I find flicking the bottom edge of the X button with the very tip of my thumb alot easier than doing it like the guy in that video. Find which ways you feel most comfortable with and just practice I guess.

try focusing on getting your finger as quickly as possible to other buttons, and it will take your finger off quick enough to short hop. also i find that using the L trigger instead of R takes tension out of the right hand and acts as a sort of counterbalance making it easier to shorthop and just press butons quickr in general

I remember Learning to shdl was a ***** for me but I just practiced a lot and got it down
