My first move will be to rush into vs. mode, put in a lvl 3 or so CPU, and then select Zelda, just into a battle, and hit the Down-B button and pray.
As for new guys, the answer is Snake. I think people are forgetting that he exists on this thread a little.

If I'm alone, then I'll go with everyone starting with whomever's in the upper left on the character select screen.

Or maybe Pokemon Trainer. Those three look rather sexy.

To tell you the truth about the first character I will play as? Most likely Mario. At the time I'm not sure what characters we will even start out with.

Mario was the first character I played as in SSB64. Though I played as Link first in SSBM. Most likely Mario.

I doubt that Ike, King DeDeDe(if he was that means that all three kirby reps are on the starting roster), and Lucas are starters.

I'lll probably start with Pikachu, then work my way to a few new characters, Mario, Ice Climbers, and then everyone else available from the start.

I be pickin' Pikachu first, since he's been my favorite character since the days of SSB64.
After that I'll use Dedede because he looks awesome, and I want to try my hand at heavywieghts.
Then I'll use PT, for his unique fighting style. To see how I do.
When I'm done with those three I'll move on to Ice Climbers, my second choice in Melee.
