Am I the only one? I don't have a 3DS or a Wii U. My parents won't let me use my money, but if I asked them to buy it, they'll call me spoiled/control me because they bought it. Thought of several ideas on how to secretly get one, but I can't seem to find an idea >.>

1) Go out and buy the 3DS version because it's cheaper.
2) Destroy the recite.
3) Convince your parents that a 3DS is a sound investment because it's literally the only decent handheld on the market with a massive library of titles. It also means they don't have to buy you anything like a smart phone for on the spot hand held entertainment.
4) If that fails, w/e you have the thing and they can't return it. Worst they can do is destroy it, but that's pretty crap parenting so I'm going to assume they wont do that. They'll probably just take it away and give it to you in allotments. Which is fine as I said the 3DS is a pretty decent investment you won't be needing a new hand held by the time they just decide to let you keep it.

Ahh, I went through this phase before many years back. The best you could do is get the 3DS since it's easy to hide, or you could always make a crazy lie and say you traded something for it or you won it at a school draw. I find the latter the best since it's very unlikely your parents would make you return it to the school or completely remove it from your hands.

If those don't fit your bill, I'll rather you let your parents control you; at least you'll be able to play here and there.

Why even call it your money if your parents don't let you buy whatever you want with it?

On the other hand I haven't been a preteen for quite some time so I will let the rest of the community that can actually relate to problems like these assist you while I simply observe the current child generations tactics on manipulating their parentals in order to play video games.

The thing is, I prefer the Wii U version..
Well... you won it. You didn't secretly go out and buy it. Done.

Aye, it's technically not even his money. It's only considered his if he spends it on necessities such as food, clothing, school supplies, etc. Welcome to the world of submissiveness/being dominated.

The manipulation tactics are endless!

I wouldn't call it submissiveness or domination. If your parents tell you that they don't want you to have a game and you want to live in their house and you aren't a legal adult, then your choice is clear : you can't have the game.

I understand your point of view and agree that's the general consensus of being a child/teen, but in a sense listening to one's parents' every beck and call would be considered domination as well. It's probably just my way of thinking now that I'm no longer in those teenage years and reminisce about the past.

Anyhoo, allow me to reinstate my earlier phrase: Welcome to the world of being a good child.

You could always see if any of your friends will get one of the versions and play it with them.

But parents not letting their children play videogames is downright barbaric.

I think children get along just fine without video games.
I don't think I would be as happy as I am today without the wonder that games like Super Mario Galaxy, Crash Bandicoot 3 and Pokemon Mystery Dungeon 2 provided me. You listen to Reggie's E3 speech to realize why there's nothing wrong with having a little fun.

You can have fun without a lot of things, that doesn't mean your life wouldn't be better without them :v I can have fun by kicking a rock, but I'm probably going to have more fun either kicking a real football, playing a videogame, listening to music, drawing, etc...

What are you trying to do to this thread, man? Obviously video games aren't basic necessities, but that doesn't justify parents restricting them without good reason. Our lives are better with video games. Considering that you're on a video game forum, I'd imagine you'd share that sentiment.

It also doesn't mean your life would be better or worse without them.

The fact they aren't necessary doesn't automatically make them harmful, and the fact they aren't harmful doesn't automatically make them necessary.

Me enjoying games or Smash Bros. has nothing to do with my opinion on children playing video games, the two are wholly unrelated. When a kid reaches the legal adult age where I (or in this case, the parent) have no legal accountability for their actions or their care any longer, the kid can then buy and do whatever they please. Until then, you can damn well bet they are obligated to live under the house rules. That's life.

Video games do not fall under a black category of items that are questionable to adhere to, like pressured pedophilia or child abuse. These are video games. If a parent wants to restrict their kid from video games, they bloody well can.

My best friend grew up without tv and video games. He would always come over to play games and usually could pick up a game and figure it out a hour later. His usual day was wake up at 4 am to do household chores set by his father and then go school. His weekends were the same but chores until 1 pm when he had to study until dinner time. Evening was for playing.

He got into video games as an university student and we played them all the time. Then he got married, had kids, and turned into father lol.

Not sure of the point I'm trying to make but I don't think kids neccedsarily need games. I still suggest finding a friend who will get it or see if you can wait for Christmas.

If the money is given to him by his parent's, it's his money, otherwise they shouldn't give it to him in the first place.

You can also try to explain them how much Smash means to you...but keep this on your mind...if your parents come from an artistic background, they're probably going to understand if you explain them how much this game means to you, but if they come from a scientific background...then I don't know...

@Zipzo You're fortunate enough to get the game, kid's need to have some sort of activity such as video games or even sports, they can't be locked in the house just working, that's awful. It's extremely unfair that some kid's aren't even allowed keep up to date with games they really enjoy when other kids in the area get everything. For some reason, I get the idea that you're descouraging him from getting the game -_-

If there's anything preventing me from buying new systems for smash, it's that I need that money to live and whatever.

Anyway, for your situation, you could probably strike a deal with them in some way or another. Do more chores, only play video games after finishing your homework, sleep earlier. I don't know. Whatever your parents want you to do. Just outline your own terms, and if they think it's fair they won't bug you about it in the future.

You don't know his parents financial situation. His situation with his grades (assuming he's in school), or anything about this kid other than him saying his parents don't want him to have it. Or anything else for that matter.

Who are any of you to judge based on limited info.

Seriously, one of your friends will probably have the game, play with them at their house from time to time.

I can sleep without a bed.

If you really think these analogies have any business existing in the first place you really are lost.

Who said anything about locking kids up? Where did that come from? In any case it's rather ironic you use video games (something you generally tend to be inside while doing) as your example.

It's a figure of speech, learn to understand it! You are getting the game and you freaking know it, the guy obviously loves smash brothers and want's the game really badly, hes asking for advice on how to convince his parents to buy the game, not people discouraging him from buying it. That's low...

Nevermind. I change my thought for this post and I'm just going to say just do what your parents want you to do and just play it at a friend's house. Then you'll do whatever you want when you grow up.

He's asking adults, some whom probably even have their own kids, how he can go under his parents noses to play a video game.

I love Smash, and I want anyone to play it, but he's not my kid. His parents have seen fit to apply the rules they have to him for a reason, so who am I to justify with any rhyme or reason why or how he should break his own parents rules?

It's the reality of the matter, either your parents are strict or they're not. If they don't let you buy games, then you can't buy games. Period. If they do, you'd better exercise responsibility because they can take them away. If they don't then that's how the cookie crumbles. Grow up, get your own apartment, and buy your own games.

This.

I think obedience is a hard thing to learn sometimes. I certainly hope they let him get the game but in the end its just a game. Some times you need to un-hype stuff in your mind so that you can have self-control

Playing Basic Brawl turned me into an angrier person. lol. I can only imagine the kids/teens that play CoD or other online games with voice chat  Its kinda upsetting. I know Smash isn't they type of game that is evil or whatever.

It sucks for people that can't get it on release. If I don't get a game close to when it releases I lose interest in it.

Wait for a holiday, give your friends the money, have them get you the game and system as a "present". Parents are still a nuisance, but it's better than nothing.

Except he's not, and if you were actually paying attention to the thread instead of trying to derail it with your own moral position you'd realize that. He briefly threw the idea around at the end of his post and people ran with it, but that's not the point.

This isn't a "Are video games good and how do I steal from my dad's wallet?" thread, it's a "Who can't get this game?" thread.

Be creative. Show your parents how much Smash Brothers means to you. When I was younger I always tried to find ways, to get my way.

Maybe reason with them and go halfies on the game, be willing to trade in or sell a lot of your games, if your parents don't want you playing 24/7 for some reason, tell them you'll only play on weekends and holidays. Also be respectful and helpful and considerate, I dunno if you already are, but you should be like this regardless. If you start now, come Winter they'll want to get Smash for their little angel :p

Do your parents not let you play video games?
In all seriousness did you not think to ask for a 3ds or Wii U for Christmas or birthday? If not then it obviously isn't a huge priority for you, unless your parents are against video games.

Ask for the Wii U this Xmas or straight up tell them you really want a Wii U and that it is what you really want to spend the money you have on it. If they are so against you buying it then they'll but it for you.

Anyways good luck, my friend had this same problem when he was pre-18, he had to buy everything himself and his parents were still incredibly strict about it. Unless your spending all of your savings(if your in highschool you shouldn't be dumping all your money) there is no reason they shouldn't let you. You just need to present the argument why you need it.
