You see, Wolf represents the twin brothers Romulus and Remus, who were abandoned by their uncle, raised by a wolf, then adopted by a family, grew up, returned and killed their uncle, then founded the city of Rome, after which they didn't see eye-to-eye and fought, with Romulus ultimately killing Remus and claiming Rome as his own.

And that's how Wolf represents the whole series. (Even though he wasn't in the first two.)

These two children, the owners of Master and Crazy hand are the 'Super Smash Brothers'

This has already been mentioned several times in various forms over the thread, but I feel like it needs repeating since this thread does need to be reminded of the genuine answer in between all the cutesy joke junk.

Every playable character in the game is a Smash Brother.

The "Brother" part really does mean they are family, because they are all from Nintendo games or are at least closely related to Nintendo. Of course, it is also a pun on Nintendo's most famous franchise, Super Mario Brothers... so it works in multiple ways, really.

The original Super smash bros only featured male or gender-anonymous (Pikachu, JigglyPuff, Yoshi, Kirby) Nintendo figures, Samus Aran being exception. Thus, "Brothers [and a girl]" in a distantly related, twice-removed terms.
