I wish school were like it is in lucky star. you do something bad, you get smacked on the head with a paddle.

frankly, it is better than the mental torture that they have now.

After reading all the posts in this blog thread. The following sums up my response.

"What. The. Ever. Loving. Heck?"

A keylogger is outrageous from what information I gather from reading this (I am not familiar with computer security programs), this doesn't sound like computer security, more like computer 'fascism' (quip Godwin's law and I'll start throwing tire irons in succession) which is ridiculous as heck, may be their grounds, but what students want is respect, not snobbery and condescending measures.

Hear hear man. When I was in high school, we had everything blocked, and I mean EVERYTHING. Proxies were the thing and watching the teacher's monitor.
jellybeanjdudeispro, look up proxies on google, you can find many on many of them. Just don't share with others or the school will catch on and you'll get that locked.

College gets so much better, unless there's a threat for a school shooting or something, you're free to go on whatever you please.

Improving school work productivity by blocking non-school-work related sites is one tollerable action, but monitoring EVERYTHING you do to prevent 'cyber bullying' is F#$%ing rediculous. This invades rights to privacy too far. I'm pretty sure nothing as extreme as this is mentioned in any school document that needed to be signed by students. We need protesters.

That's obviously going much too far. I don't think it's even necessary since it's not going to help the students in any way. School should make students feel safer. Yes, blocking sites that aren't necessary for school use will already prevent cyber-bullying. Monitoring everything you type is excessive and doesn't make people feel safer. The students will feel like they're being watched all the time.

I've only read the OP, so I'll keep my response tailored to it.

While I'm against this kind of key-logging program in general, I don't think that students have any rights. So while this may violate some civil liberties, those liberties don't exist within the confines of school in the first place. If you write an email on school computers, during school hours, then school officials are well within their bounds to examine it or do whatever else they want with it. Why are you writing personal messages in class anyway?

That's the stupidest idea I've ever heard... Let people write what they want, no one should be able to go through your personal emails unless you give them your password...

Well at my school, the administrator tech people can watch what we're doing and post messages to us if we aren't supposed to be doing something. Also, they'll disconnect you from the server if you are doing something bad, but the worst thing is when you're typing an essay and they disconnect you from the server.. I'm like "WTF?" lol

Well firstly, I wanna thank you for awarding me BotW (Firus acronym <3)

Onto your post,l people asked the same question, and you make a valid point. What I find the worst about this is the gesture that it makes. I know, along with fellow students, that I have no rights in school, and it's been this way for 13 years of my life already so it doesn't bother me. What really irks me is that we as students over the years have apparently built a sense of mutual respect with teachers. Our school usually doesn't enforce such extreme policies because there's a level of maturity there that even they themselves acknowledge.

I like to think of it this way. Whenever we have school duties, ie homework/coursework assignments, they must be done, and if they aren't, "You're men now, not boys, but adults. You are mature enough to be in control of your own learning. We aren't going to hold your hand the whole way." So basically, they're saying "You're old enough when it suits us."

This is quite apparent, as their ridiculous surveillance methods are something you'd enforce upon children who you'd deem have no control over their actions, and need these sanctions in place to keep in line. If we're mature enough to be in control of our own learning, we're mature enough not to type stuff like "Britney Spears xxx" on Google Images.

Actions say far more than words, and this action just showed that school management has absolutely no respect for us. That's the problem. I don't care about my human rights to freedom of speech and all that crap, mainly because freedom of speech is a myth and does not exist anyway. What I DO care about, is an environment of trust and respect that I thought had existed. Alas, I was mistaken.
I don't like to quote myself lol, but I find it got my message across well, and it took a while to articulate that answer, so yeah, sums up my sentiments pretty much.

Sorry for bringing back a "dead" topic, but....

Honestly, I think what's ridiculous about this is that we spend all this money (THAT WE DON'T HAVE!) to over-protect computers that don't even have sufficient internet. Plus, let's consider some of the things that are blocked.

Pornography content
Extremely violent content
Harmful Words

^ All these should most definitely be blocked.

Facebook
Myspace
Twitter
Video Games
Youtube

^ All these probably should be blocked, although some youtube videos should be made into exceptions as they can be educational.

Presidential canidates websites were blocked
Religious site
Political sites
Cultural sites (I tried to go on the officially Canadian government site & was blocked!)

^ NONE of these should be blocked. As bad as blocking e-mail is, this stuff is TERRIBLE! Students should be free to explore any amount of political, insightful, or spiritual knowledge-as long as it isn't damaging. In fact, students should be openly ENCOURAGED to learn about different cultures, political ideologies, religions, etc. It will not just give the students further insight, but can & will inspire them to learn more & look into this stuff more.

Let's be honest. Isn't blocking knowledge about your future & current leaders important restricting our education? Isn't blocking political, religious, & cultural sites limiting our view of the world & ability to know others' opinions?

Isn't the right to knowledge a part of "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness?"

Isn't the American school system already failing to ignite a need of knowledge in students?

My favorite teacher told our class that during the SAT's some kid refused to do the SAT beacuse "he doesn't read." He's in the 11TH GRADE! This is a sign of our failure to ignite a passion for learning in our students. If we opened up to extent these boundaries & exploration the school system would see more people with a desire to learn.

Is limiting our right to knowledge and limiting our freedom not one in the same?

Haven't millions of Americans sacrificed themselves for our ALL of these freedoms?

I think this is really proof that the American school system is essentially dead & worthless. We are essentially editing our student's minds by blocking truth & knowledge-the opposite of the theory of schooling.

If the schools control & limit our knowledge & what we can learn in school, what is will be the difference from students & puppets in 10 years? Whose to say they won't completely control our speech & thoughts?

Let me close with a terrible story.

My friend was suspended once for going on the Obama 08' site during lunch, yet some kids got caught in a giant orgy on the tennis courts & nothing happened to them?

Is this seriously what we stand for as a nation now? If it is, then the school system is pulling all the strings, & justice is done....

I understand how bad teachers get. Just the other day I had to slap her for waking me up 10 minutes before nap time was over.

Then again for dropping my cookies in the changing station.

I Could post the more obvious one, but its a Seizure induced GIF :ohwell:

also My teachers use the school comps for personal use, so they can't install a system like this because *GASP* some of my teachers have facebook! :O

That just plain stinks.

People need there own privacy where they can let down their guard and have a brief moment of peace. I mean we've all done stupid stuff when we think noones watching, how would the people who set up this keylogger feel if it was used on them?
