Subspace Emissary kind of took away the fun and excitement of unlocking characters.
It felt too easy.
I hope this time around they have a good balance of ways to unlock characters.
Like beating Classic/Adventure/All Star/etc. with certain characters or on certain difficulties.
I wouldn't mind having to log 50 hours into the game again to unlock Mewtwo. That was a truly awarding experience. (May be off on the actual hour limit).

you needed to put 50 hours for Mewtwo? me and my cousins always did the "leave a 2p match on for 24 (or 12, I forget) hours thing".

Do a 10 hit combo, do a 20 hit combo, lol.

KO your opponent without taking damage(Must be a level 9 computer(1 stock))

Destroy random stage hazard.

Come to close to shield breaking(your own shield)

Power Shield 5 attacks in one game

Follow a grab with a meteor smash

There should be multiple ways to goes about unlockin em. Personally, I'd like a checklist that tells us what we have to do to unlock sumthin, without tellin us what it is we're unlockin. For example.

UNLOCK #52 (Do one of these things to unlock this item)
1.Beat Target Smash in under 30 Seconds
2.Clear Classic with DK on hard
3.KO 10 opponents with Banana Peel

After performing one of these feats, you would be challenged by Diddy Kong, beat him to unlock him. Or, if Unlock #52 was the Bramble Blast CD, you'd get a notification saying that ya unlocked it.
By just calling it Unlock # 52, you don't know what to expect, and the challenges could be assigned randomly to the list so that no two players ever get the same challenges. Of course this checklist could be modified to requiring ya to complete 2 or more of the actions on the list to receive your prize. This is like having all of brawl's challenges board visible at once, instead of having to complete nearby challenges to see what ya have to do to beat the other challenges, all the challenges are numbered on a list, and when ya select the challenge, ya can see its requirements.

You should have to beat Sakurai in a free-for-all match with two level 9 computers filling the other two slots on wifi all items to unlock the last character.

Exactly the same as melee- melee is absolute perfection and the new games need to be a clone if it to be successful.

By doing some pretty hard stuff. They shouldn't be easy to unlock. For example: unlocking someone by doing 1000 matches, or unlocking someone by having 2 level 9s team up on u... u catch my drift?

Brawl kinda redid Kirby Air Ride's unlock grid system, but it wasn't nearly as rewarding feeling. KAR's grid let you actually unlock characters and stuff instead of pretty much just trophies and songs etc. This is what I'm talking about:

A lot of the time in this game you'd just unlock a random one and it'd be a character unlock or something. Make it more like that than Brawl's version.

IMHO number of matches is possibly the worst way to unlock characters, especially if you know you're doing it to unlock characters. Hours is sort of in the same boat, but easily exploitable. While Brawl's story mode might've been easy, it at least made sense. You unlocked a character when that character was relevant. How does playing 500 vs matches relate to any particular character. # of matches is just tedious, especially if you have to do it all by yourself.

I think that unlocks should be related to solo mode and/or feats while playing. I thought playing adventure mode as Marth to get Roy was perfectly fine, and that 2 thing on the clock they did with Luigi was hilariously appropriate as I see now. This makes character unlocks relevant, and they can always be made harder by say, must be on intense or can only lose 1 stock, etc.

Unlock DIddy: Slip on a Banana Peel 10 times.
Unlock Metaknight: Three-stock someone without taking damage.

I don't like wasting time unlocking characters, honestly. I'd rather have them all from the start or do the SSE method. Lets me get right to actually playing the game and unlocking the other stuff and makes things easier if I have to start a new file for some reason.

Surviving one straight hour of watching random people on YouTube's "Top 10 Characters I want the most in SSB4" videos with awful editing, emo background music, Goku/Naruto/Silver the Hedgehog appearing in the top 3, and the 12 year old kid who made the video's voice sounding like his mouth is stuffed with McDoubles.

THEN you'd truly feel like you've earned that character unlock.

It'd be awesome if noone was able to unlock any character during the first week after the release, but instead everyone got one random unlock right away.
Online Firiendlies would be like "Shut up! You got Wii Fit!?, etc.." :troll:

Felt like 50 hours.

I unlocked him from playing an insane amount of vs matches
I cheated by leaving controllers plugged in and left a match running while I went to school. I came back, finished the match and unlocked Mewtwo. I don't think I thought about anything else while I was at school that day.

I can think of one amusing way to unlock Falco:

1. No items
2. Fox only
3. FINAL DESTINATION

Personally, I think the battle itself should be a bit harder when battling the new challenger.
I don't think I've ever heard of someone losing to the challenger, failing to recruit him/her.
When you see the "Warning! Challenger approaching!"-screen, you always go like "Yeauz, I got a new character" before the match even begins.

If the battle was a bit harder, it'd be more thrilling > rewarding.

Beat them on Final Destination.

No items.

Speaking of, I always found it weird that in the battle where you unlock Mewtwo in Melee, Parasols where apperantly set on Very High or something...

But in a more serious matter, Even Match - like battles against characters would be awesome. That's why I loved unlocking Ganondorf in Melee for example. You had that awesome Even Match before. And after that, a face of in Final Destination. I also seriously feel that no items should be on the screen when you fight the characters. As a kid, I was often killed by random Bob-Ombs during these matches I remember...

Yeah, I'm just really bad at reading sarcasm on the internet, and I needed a confirmation on if somebody would actually be that delusional.

maybe one way would be to unlock the classic, all-star, and adventure mode trophies of a certain character for the chance to fight the new challenger.

If you're interested I already got a friend of mine to agree to do this for me, I could send you the list too.

Once the game is released he is going to go into the internet and make me a list of how to unlock every character and all he is going to write are their franchises (unless its a new franchise, where he will only write "new franchise"), that way I can unlock everything right away while still being surprised about what I am unlocking, win-win.

The franchise thing is so that I can speculate about who it is while I am unlocking them, making the surprise even sweeter (for me).

1000 matches isn't hard.. that's annoying.

And let's face it. Anything that involves not taking damage from A.I. would make most of us simply resort to cheap tactics/A.I. glitching like staying on a corner where CPUs don't react well and luring them off edges just to come back and edgehog.

As a new idea.. since SmashBros.com looks like it will just reveal all characters, we should vouch for a system that acts exactly like the Event Matches in Melee/Brawl where it'll tell you exactly WHO will be unlocked and you just fight them straight on(Certain conditions may apply).

Well when I said hard, I didnt mean hard, I kinda meant annoying. It should take over a couple of months to get all of the characters, maybe my examples weren't good but it should be something to that extent.

I dont think it will reveal all characters.. The only reason luigi was revealed was because it was the year of luigi, iwata said that

I literally can't disagree with you more. Over a couple of months to get all characters is an absolutely terrible idea. I'm not sure what would be an ideal amount of time, but anything a month or over is ridiculous.

It's possible, since Brawl Dojo did that and then some.

I'll take that much into account that Smash 4 might reveal all characters before release, though it is purely conjecture.

I guess we agree to disagree. :ohwell:
Btw, if it actually took a couple of months playing the game to unlock all of the characters... I would hate it, Im sure we all would. Im just saying it would be a "truly rewarding way to unlock characters" hence the title...

I feel like specific event matches tailored to the character you're trying to unlock could feel rewarding. idk if that'd work for ALL the characters, but definitely some.

Here's something novel: Unlocking characters by something easy.

*ducks from the imminent flames*

Hey! Let me finish! See, not everyone here is a hardcore Smash player. I know people who love the game and even I (as a not so hardcore player) could easily stomp them. Now, these people still want to play the game with all the characters, but if all the characters require some insane, inane difficult challenge to unlock, you've just denied a lot of casual and low skill players from being able to play these characters just to satisfy the need to make everything harder for your own play style. It's one thing if it's something that doesn't effect ones enjoyment of the game such as a trophy or a title, but something as core as a character shouldn't be that difficult to unlock. I honestly wouldn't mind something like simply beating Classic/Adventure with character X, or play X matches, where X is something below 20 hours (50 hours? As someone with a job and a life, that takes longer than you'd think.). Make the extra hard challenges for things that don't matter to the core of the game, like...I dunno...a special title, or trophies or something.

Very good point. I remember exploiting the game to get extra hours in brawl when my save file was lost, and I don't want that again.

Maybe something more like themed events, or a series of themed events that hinted toward who or what you are unlocking, with a task bar and minor trophy rewards along the way. Each time at the end of the task list you would fight the new character, then it would reset ( to new challenges of course) and have a new character reward. Difficulty could be set from very easy to intense, just like classic mode, some levels would have a mandatory character to play as, while some would be your choice from your roster, and some could be your choice from a smaller roster. (ie, just swordsmen)

I feel tedium doesn't feel rewarding when complete, but something that's structured to feel epic in that character's universe that could maybe be done on a lower difficulty for newer players, ie event matches, could be cool.

Personally I like it when they show up unexpectedly. If they make it too obvious that doing this big challenge will get you an unlock it takes the shock/fun factor away.

I feel like that would still happen upon seeing the event match for the first time, but I do see where you're coming from.
