Yeah.. but eventually most of us will get tired of it and just look it up on the internet.

I am seeing some very wonderful ideas being offered here. It's more than likely we'll see several methods of unlock for the same character that caters to every playstyle and skill level out there. It's no question that x number of matches will be one guaranteed method of unlocking the right to challenge a character, though. I like to think that's what the Adventure and Event mode is meant to be. I kind of want an expanding Adventure mode that grows as you unlock characters and franchises. What that one person up there said about a checklist to unlock the right to challenge could easily be applied to these modes. Scramble through, meet the requirements and challenge them as part of the adventure... and in doing so, unlock new areas that can randomly show up, and these provide the keys to the next target, for example.

I feel like it should be more fun things than just “beat classic mode with Mario” or whatever.

Here’s an idea I had- One that’s both challenging but not overly so. I feel like the combined-target test time was always cool but unused. What if, to get, say, Sonic, you had to complete target test with all of the starting characters and have a combined target test time of under a certain time? That represents not only Sonic (gotta go fast), but also ensures that if you want to get that character first, you can.

I also loved getting Luigi in Melee. Ending the Mushroom Kingdom on a 2 was great, I wouldn’t mind at all seeing something like that again. Especially since I loved that cutscene of Luigi stepping on Mario so I did it every time.

The SSE was an easy way to do it, and even though I loved Brawl like a LOT, it didn’t feel as rewarding unlocking the characters that way, but the alternative was just like playing through classic mode 200 times or some bs like that so.. yeah.. Grinding to achieve something in games can be rewarding but it saps a lot of fun out of the game.

Weegee should be an unlockable character. To get him, you have to beat 3 level 9 CPU's in a FFA as Luigi doing nothing.

I want more unlocks you can do during V.S. mode (i.e. Ness). It makes it more interesting for me, since it appears because you did something specific without realizing. It gives it an element of surprise.

I'm totally fine with all the special unlock conditions for secret characters and everything, but it would be a nice gesture to the competitive scene if there was some way to unlock all characters and stages. Such a feature will probably not exist, though.

There should be multiple ways to goes about unlockin em. Personally, I'd like a checklist that tells us what we have to do to unlock sumthin, without tellin us what it is we're unlockin. For example.

UNLOCK #52 (Do one of these things to unlock this item)
1.Beat Target Smash in under 30 Seconds
2.Clear Classic with DK on hard
3.KO 10 opponents with Banana Peel

After performing one of these feats, you would be challenged by Diddy Kong, beat him to unlock him. Or, if Unlock #52 was the Bramble Blast CD, you'd get a notification saying that ya unlocked it.
By just calling it Unlock # 52, you don't know what to expect, and the challenges could be assigned randomly to the list so that no two players ever get the same challenges. Of course this checklist could be modified to requiring ya to complete 2 or more of the actions on the list to receive your prize. This is like having all of brawl's challenges board visible at once, instead of having to complete nearby challenges to see what ya have to do to beat the other challenges, all the challenges are numbered on a list, and when ya select the challenge, ya can see its requirements.
I would love this setup!

Just give me all the characters out of the box. We'll all have them a week after release anyway.
I really hope Sakurai doesn't read these.

The worst part of Injustice was everything being unlocked in the beginning. A lot of the fun of these games is unlocking characters & stages. I erased my Melee save a few times to re-unlock everything.

I missed out on unlocking Falco, Ganondorf, R.O.B. and Wolf the usual way, so I wish Story Mode wouldn't unlock characters on the roster.

Personally, I think Brawl had the right idea. Every character had 3 unlock methods:
  1. Perform a feat in single player mode (like target test, 100-man melee, etc) - for solo players looking for challenge.
  2. Play X Versus matches - for players that only ever play multiplayer mode with their friends.
  3. Play through the story mode - for players who want an easy, but entertaining way to get the characters.
I am in PikaJew's camp; I like working hard to unlock characters and the feeling of accomplishment that comes with. But obviously that's not for everyone. By choosing the methods outlined above, Brawl ensured that no matter how you liked to play Smash (solo or multiplayer, hardcore or casual), you get to unlock every character.

I agree i try to unlock ROB the trophy way but no matter how hard i try i always can't resist unlocking him by story mode (and no i did not want to use the quick way of unlocking characters)

And as for unlocking characters in ssb4 i think there should still be 3 ways to unlock characters

1 single player methood (examples beat classic with any character, beat 100 man melee, beat boss battle mode with falco or fox,)

2 ### vs matches

3 a secondary single player methood

Maybe if you're playing online and someone is using a character you haven't unlocked, by winning the match you also unlock that character

There is none. The reward of unlocking characters is not in the method of unlocking itself but instead gaining access to the full game.

When you compare time spent playing the full game with all the characters unlocked vs time spent unlocking them in the first place, it's pretty insignificant. I understand the symbolic importance of unlock-able characters and I of course remember obsessing over them as a kid, but the way I see it now, unlocking characters is just an arbitrary obstacle preventing immediate access to all of the game's content. It doesn't really need any more thought put into it than it's already received. I don't really care how the characters are unlocked as long as I can gain access to the full roster in a single afternoon if need be. Any longer than that is just needless hassle.

For me this is how i would be satisfied :

1) jigglypuff, ness, c.falcon and luigi should be unlocked the exact same way you had to unlock them in 64.

2) one character being unlocked by beating arcade/story mode with all characters.

3) one character being unlocked after beating all-star mode with all characters (if all-star mode returns).

4) same goes for beating target test/board the platforms or whatever with all characters.

5) beat all event matches (if this returns)

*note* the characters you unlock by doing these are just characters weve seen from past games not the newcomers.

6) doing certain things on certain stages unlock a character such as doing something special on sonics stage (example : unlocking a certain sonic song and playing that song on his stage or unlocking his stage then when you first play on his stage he comes out from the background and challenges you). same would happen with snake or similar.

7) getting a certain number of kills in multiman melee or whatever.

8) unlocking certain stages or trophies.

9) simple things like not losing any lives in story mode/all-star mode/arcade mode, but has to be on normal or hard.

10) other weird things like to unlock a pokemon character you have to play as a pokemon character and do the requirements.

11) finishing modes in certain times.

thats about all i can think of lol

I was just thinking about unlocks in general, but I would love to see a tiered sort of system. e.g you cannot unlock X before you unlock all achievements under X. In this system, there are easy things to unlock but it is challenging to unlock things higher in the hierarchy. Also, the grid unlock system that is in brawl was really fun to me because I would get "blocked" back in the day by not being able to complete a challenge. Just a thought.

I really don't understand this. I LOVED that I didn't have to unlock anything in Injustice. My friends and I were able to mess around with every character and stage right away, figuring out who our favorites were. Same thing when I got Super Street Fighter IV a few years back.

Unlocking everything is a grind to me. I didn't have to unlock anyone in Marvel vs. Capcom 2, and that was fine. I still had fun with that game for years.
