What if?... (My concern with the mindset of the smash community)

Certainly if there were two types of Smash Bros. tournaments, then you could choose the one you would go to. An item on tournament and an item off tournament.
Go for it! Instead of waiting for it, host some item tournaments. Put them on the boards and stuff too. The reason item tournaments don't exist is because they don't have the popularity of no item tournaments. They existed for a long time until the opinion of the boards changed. So if you can create an item scene, more power to you. As things stand though, there won't be item tournaments.

Is removing one move gonna make it not as deep?
Depends on the technique, but all the most important ones are still intact in one way or another.

well in our case it's wave dashing, and people ignore that we have already got two techs (basic ones but still) Gliding and Toadstool jump. Sure neither are gonna make up for the lack of wavedashing but it is new stuff added.

Yes, I know, my current username says I'm pretty much new here but I've been on smashboards since 2001... (People like McFox know this)
I remember when Melee was going to come out and... there was much much MUCH less complaining O.o
Sure there were inferno's here and there of flaming sonic fanboys vs "no 3rd party in mah smash bros!" people but over all, people were simply looking forward to another great game starring their favorite nintendo characters.
I was gone from the boards for a while and it seems I left just before the tournament scene started... (If I had seen that one coming I would've stayed! LOL! I feel so stupid :p)
There was no (or perhaps only barely) talk of wavedash back then, there were no advanced techniques discovered yet and people all enjoyed playing the game! Why? Well, it's only game where Mario and Link can team up to kick some Pikachu en Jigglypuff tail for example!

I just wonder, what happened? Really, do you all just play this game for the techniques or do you actually play for it's uniqueness and characters?

(I prefer items off in a tournament as well yes, and yes I use wavedashing and shffls in competetive play. But if you'd remove those techniques, even if items couldn't be turned off, I'd still play the game and still play it competetive.)

EDIT: this may be a long post so for people who don't find what the emphasis of this post is on, it's on "what happened?"

Is removing one move gonna make it not as deep? What else has been removed? L-canceling has been changed but not removed.
Well, no, I'm not implying that, but it does seem like it is Nintendo's strategy to make its games as shallow as possible.

Well I would agree with that, but consider that Brawl is technically being produced by a man who is not part of Nintendo. And thats not really anything new. We pretend it is because they are doing it more so now but really not much has changed. At least from a multiplayer point of view.

Other than smash how many highly competitive games has Nintendo made that isn't made with simplicity and the notion of all people playing equal regardless of exp?

I'd say the single player games of nintendo are more in danger than it's multiplayer games.

N-n-no. No. No.
I'm an idea man, not a.. do-something-about-it man. That requires like. Sifting through crowds of people and weeding out the peoples who will support this plan...

Hmm, maybe I'll do... that. P|-|Æ|2 mY 1337|\|355!

If you want it to happen then get the ball moving yourself. If you can get a legitimate items tournament scene for Brawl going then more power to you. There are a lot of people that love items, so I'm sure you could make some progress on that.

Me and a friend of mine are planning on hosting brawl tournaments starting summer 2008.
The main event will be items off (both 1vs1 and 2vs2)
However! Yes, I like the aforementioned, we probably will include an items on tournament as well. That way smashers can be drawn to the "official" tournament, and have an excuse to play with items "for fun."
Should be very much doable

Ooh, this thread gave me my idea for my next blog post.

I played with a friend today, and he is an items advocate. However, after suffering several losses, he started throwing out item johns. He is a good sport, so he didn't lay it on thick, but he repeatedly claimed "he wouldn't have lost had I not grabbed that star rod" or whatever. The items seem to "turn on you" when playing against a competitive player. He was awesome with items, but I could move faster and space better, so I had the advantage regardless.

I DON'T KNOW!!!
Wow... Just... Wow.... 0.o

So many points of view on the same subjects... My own views have changed so many times on this topic alone that I don't even know if I should bother having one in the firstplace anymore...

But... At the very least I'm certain now that my fears of the competitive smash community not being able to thrive in a different environment where completely misplaced on the wrong points of view...

Thanks for helping ease my mind guys... :D

Glitches are fun. Even if they don't add anything to the game or to tournaments.

The blackout glitch is awesome, super wavedashing and superduper WDing are awesome.

Stuff like falling through stages is bad [obviously], but the other things don't affect you if you play casually.
