What happens to melee when Brawl is released?

Im honnestly never going to stop playing melee. Anyone who quits melee completly when brawl comes out is pretty trendy and sad.
Well I'm not afraid to say that when Brawl comes out, there's some chances that I'll quit Melee completely.

I gotta focus on the new game, play it for awhile, and see if it's really worth it or not. Melee didn't become the great game it is in one day, so you gotta give the same chance to Brawl. We might have a diamond in the rough here.

Another thing is that there was a big difference between SSB64 and Melee... now the difference between Melee and Brawl looks alot thinner. Melee really has fewer chances if Brawl is Melee 2.0.

If Brawl happens to be a great game, then I guess that competitive Melee will die slowly... If Brawl sucks, then we will still have Melee.

When Brawl comes, I'll just play it... I'm not afraid of change.

It'll be cool when we can finally play all 3 smashes on the same system.
That is a possiblity on the wii just wait for ssb64 for virtual console then you have your wish

Anyone think bridge of eldin will be the new final D?
Omg wow. I was the FIRST person to suggest that! I even made a thread called something like "Bridge of Eldin: Confirmed" and in that thread I mentioned how BOE is flat enough to be a new FinalD, just Bulblin is an a-hole and destroys everything.
But yeh, somebody should QFT this because I WAS the first person to say this.

ANYWAYS.
I agree with the people who say Melee is getting boring.
I think we need a change, an upgrade, and Brawl IS that upgrade.
ALL HAIL MEGATR--err...Brawl.

I think before Melee becomes maybe useless. Brawl should have some type of prize/trophy only gotten if you put a memory card with Melee data in.

That's not cool yo, even if you are messing around. Mic is right as well, there will be a lot of people *****ing about the differences at first, that's just how it goes.

I hate to bring Halo into this topic, cause for one I don't even play Halo, and two it seems to be the game that is anti-smash; however, when Halo 2 came out it was quite a change from the original Halo. A lot of the pros of the game dropped it because they didn't like it, but others kept running with it and regardless of whether or not Halo 2 was better (a LOT of people in the competitive community of Halo seem to think the first is far superior) Halo 2 was the latest and thusly the game that is to be played competitively. Of course, that's just how those crazy FPSers handle things.
And there it pretty much is in a nutshell. As far as tournaments go, usually the latest version of the game is applied. I preferred Street Fighter 3 New Generation and 2nd Impact to 3rd Strike, but 3rd Strike is the one that's used. Same with Alpha 2 vs Alpha 3. The latest version is used.

As for the topic I don't think Melee is just gonna be grounded out, granted Brawl is going to have far more attention. Personally the worrywarts and the overexcited are thinking too much into it. Going over every little possible detail and making assumptions.

Hell personally I wasn't liking Melee very much when it first came out. Getting used to the fluidity of the controls, the increased chaos, plus the smaller sized characters. It took me about a week and a half to get into it. Brawl might just be the same way. Give it some time to breathe, geez.

On top of that, tournament scene aside, it looks to be a great game on it's own anyway. I think it'd be easier with less tournytard thinking and more gamer thinking.

And Dylan, lemme paint a scenario for you. Brawl comes out and you don't like it, but all your friends and everyone you play with do. They move on, and you don't, what would you do?

I think a large part of it is what characters are taken out.

It seems like SSB was the Smash for people who couldn't handle Melee in a lot of ways. I still loved to play it, but I always gave Melee the top choice.

Basically, it comes down to what the advantages are of playing one system over another. If the only differences between two games were "there are more characters," I think the old game would get the boot completely, hands down. Now that is unlikely, indeed impossible, that that will be the case, but depending on the changes and how drastic, old games could either be played almost as strong as ever or they could be merely casual/reminiscent play to completely dropped.

To tell you the truth, I'm kind of getting sick of SSBM. After all of these years, it's starting to get boring. It needs a change, and that change is Brawl. Brawl will definitely replace it.
i feel ya

it really has been YEARS, and i;m getting sick of it too....i got an action replay like 4 months ago just to make the game interesting again....and it certainly has---but i;m really ready for a new game

people will play melee till the end of time--it'll always be the classic that people pop in every now and then even if just to recapture a memory or be on an old stage--but i really think brawl is gonna be amazing and take over melee's place

melee seriously has the most replay value of any game ever made --which is really an incredible thing to think about-----lets hope the torch is passed succesfully

I agree completely...........when SSBM came out, I thought "WTF this camera system blows, it's too close, these attacks feel weak, grabbing has been nerfed, the C-stick sucks." and I repeatedly went back to playing SSB64 even with its inferior graphics. Melee was fun but I didn't like the physics or the hitboxes compared to SSB. Then I found out about the holy grail of advanced tech. and Melee became my all time favorite videogame in terms of actual gaming skill. To play really technically and get into the zone with L-cancels and combos is really amazing, and I think every Smash game will have that. I was also shocked when I found out you can L-cancel in SSB64 and it has made that game 20x more fun as well.

If the stats, items, char. variety, stage variety in Melee blows your mind, prepare to be drooling in a mental ward when Brawl comes out. Of course those demo videos look slow/weird........every game has slowdown/lag before they optimize the code. I'm thinking 4 players with crackerlaunchers and items on very high online is not gonna happen........even on Halo 2 they limit the kinds of items/vehicles you can use online to reduce lag.

Anyway.....just give Brawl a chance........there's hardly any info released on the actual mechanics so stop obsessing. Look at what Sakurai and HAL did with SSB and Melee.........they are absolute masterpieces.........and this time the pressure/money is on to deliver something even better. To me the only disappointing thing about Brawl is having to wait 4 more months for it.

Everyone has different taste. Although, brawl looks like its better than melee, there will be some people who will still perfer melee for whatever reason. There's nothing wrong with that, thats just how it is. So melee will not die out. The fan base will just shrink.

Well, this is how I felt about Soul Calibur 2/3. Soul Calibur 2 came out, and pretty much completely replaced the first one. However, Soul Calibur 3 came out, and the game lost it's "Soul" (Lolol pun). Number three just didn't have the same taste and feel as the second one, and, frankly, I stuck to Soul Calibur 2. I don't think this will be the case with Brawl, though.

Some new games are better than older. Some old games are better than newer.

Some times new games will try to open up to a new audience and sell a lot better.
(Resident Evil 4, it was a big change to the Survival Horror genre and it sold a lot better. Lots of the consumers have never ever played an RE game before.... I'm an REfan too..)

Look at Resident Evil 5 too, its going along the same lines as RE 4. Although MANY hardcore Resident Evil gamers are upset about the change from the originals to 4.

Some might like Brawl better, some might like Melee better. Just the same as the original to Melee. But Brawl will be superior to the number of gamers.. Atleast I think so..

They do and they don't. I'm also a person who really misses the ol 16 bit era. A time where arcades were popular and that sort of thing.

But I also give everything a chance before I end up spray farting all over it. Newer games can become classics too.

SSBM to me is just going to be finished when Brawl is out. I'm trying to have fun and get back into SSBM, and I think i've started to find it good again. I also feel like throwing in a new mem card and starting all over again, as the build up to Brawl comes closer(I live in Australia so I could be waiting till February or March. or even later... lol.).

With Brawl expectations and what i'm seeing I just can't wait, and hope this years passes quickly now that we're pass halfway.

SSBM will probably be wrapped up in a Glass Case, when BRawl comes out and preserved for what could be one of the greatest sequels ever made.

Well maybe not, Melee might be used because a lot of people will not like some of Brawl's potential. Such as, people have grown so accustomed to the unbalanced characters. But the oringinal never went away, you can tournements and fan clubs all the time online. But I think the oringinal will be complety gone and melee 3/4 gone just like the oringinal now.

brawl will be praised no matter what.

i don't really think that melee will be completely forgotten. we as smashers have been waiting for a new smash for what ...like...4, 5 years now... who can complain?? this game will be huge no doubt. Its just like saying that halo 2 might be better then 3.......(it doesn't matter really)

why??

because everyone will move on to the new content and the new fun of a refreshing look!

Nubcakes are gonna forget about melee becaues they sucked at it to begin with. People who put the time and dedication into becoming good at it will probably play it for years to come.

Did anyone here really think Melee was to fast? >_> That's the only thing I can complain about is they are slowing it down.

I didn't think melee was fast enough when it first came out, and then people who felt the same way as me learned to wavedash and shffl, and then it became just the right speed. I am going to feel bad if they slow it down.

As for what is going to happen to melee, it seems likely to me that melee will die with the gamecube, and brawl will-despite any flaws-take over. All real smash fans will always keep a copy of melee on the shelves though, just in case.

Depends on how well the transition is with the more serious players happens. It seems to be made for the more "hard-core" but Smash has always been easy to pickup and play, yet very hard to master. I could see a lot of people sticking with Melee, it has happened with other games.

@Lemon Drop, unfortunatly people important to Brawl's development seem to think so.

Do you know what will happen if brawl don't suck, but also don't be awesome?

Both will break, i say.

hmm Im surprised to not see a single "Omg I wont buy brawl if wavedash isnt In". Srsly Its just one technique. I mean I love wavedash as much as the other guy. I mean wave dash saves my butt almost every match but I could go with out it. I will still have problems but I will get use to it. IMO wavedash is gonna be a main factor to see if people will buy brawl. I will buy it nonetheless.

i have to say, i was Really looking foward to SSBB (and still am) but today i realised that i don't know if i want SSBM to be outdated lol... i mean i've been playing that game for YEARS and it's still fun. i just hope brawl is more of a continuation, or like an expansion pack or something. i would hate to pick up the controller and have my old characters start feeling different, (obviously if things are better there won't be any complaining...) or even worse having some of my favorite characters not being there at all!

i dunno it's just something that i started thinking about today. i'm pretty sure i'll still have a place for SSBM if brawl doesn't live up to its name thats for sure

haha it's funny, some games like the mario party series are SCREAMING for a new spin on things and some freshness... but this is one of the few games where i hope they keep as close as possible to the original (or melee rather, not that smash brothers for 64 wasn't epic on its own)

please nintendo. you have something perfect, don't mess it up :D

Well, personally, I'm a sucker for classics so I will still find myself playing all three, just because they all seem fun. My time will still be spent playing brawl...A LOT

Brawl will be the new and most played. Melee will just be good memories. Melee might still be played by people that will dislike brawl, old time sake, or couldn't afford a Wii.

It's just the same as ever other game that has a sequel released. Think about it, when newer versions of Mario Kart came out, people still played the old school ones, it's just that the new ones were...well, new, and attractive. The people who still play SSB 64 now, will still play it when Brawl comes out. The people who play Melee now will still dabble when Brawl comes out.

However, I do think that if Brawl has online capabilities, every will be so concerned about raising their online "ratings" (as there probably will be if it's online) that they'll take longer breaks from the old-school games.
