I'm a noob I know. Sorry if this has been posted before, I think it has but couldn't find the topic through searching.

Anyway, I sold my Gamecube as well as my copy of SSBM about a year ago to get money for a 360 and a Wii. Now I have a Wii, and I bought back SSBM, and I'm trying to learn some of the advanced tactics as well as break my old habit of jumping with the control stick. I've gotten okay at using Y to jump, but every now and then I still slip and use the control stick. I've been watching some videos online and reading some tutorials and they all use X as the jump button. So, which button do you guys use? Is there some advantage to using X over Y? I'm a Fox player and it seems like it would be better to use Y because it is closer to the b button allowing for faster reactions for doing things like waveshining (though I'm not very good at it yet). Also, even though I mostly use Y, it seems easier to short hop using the X button. Is this normal for most people?

Ever since a NY tourney ( my first EVER ) I've used my analog stick AND the x button.
I was always against using the X or Y button to jump until I actually go whooped by people that used it. ( I dont use up C to short hop in N64 though lol )

I've tried many times to long short hop with falcon's KNEE or falco's laser approach.
Now I've mastered the shuffle Uair with almost every character ( the ones that have good shffles).

You can't not like to see a moonwalked short hopped backwards Knee in Fox's Torso.

Actually, I was surprised at the search results, but after about 5 pages I started to find things like these:

Yeah, I know you're new here, but asking people what they use to jump doesn't really help anyone, what you use is what you use. So, use whatever you're comfortable with, and read some of the stickies, like the compendium:
http://www.smashboards.com/showthread.php?t=42749
and Fastfox's guide to posting in the forums:

Anyways, welcome to smashboards, hope you like it here.

Oh yeah, I use x.

Sorry, like I said, I did search, but most of the things I found, including three of the posts mentioned above, deal with whether it's better to use the control stick or buttons to jump. I know it's better to use the buttons. As for the other two, one was locked with no actual reply, and the other did answer a couple of my questions but got off topic about half way through the first page. I know in the end that it's a matter of opinion. I was just asking if one of the buttons was easier or faster for pulling off combos, or if there was any true strategy involved in using one over the other.

Fine I'll be nice for a change...I personally use the control stick when I'm not trying to shorthop and when I am trying to shorthop I use the 'y'.
This topic might be locked soon anyways...

I always used X to jump, just a habit i picked up when i first started playing the game.... easier to hit then Y. I also started using control stick for JC'ing shines, i dont think ill ever use it for normal jumping though.

I use X to jump and wavedash, because it's so easy to slide across it. Y is a good button for waveshining. Often I will use the control stick if I just want to cancel a single shine quickly.

Personally, I prefer X as I find its location both less strenuous to reach (simply moving your thumb to the side as opposed to actually moving the whole thing forward) and also well out of the way, making reaching any other buttons immediately after easier. Just my opinion.

i use the side jump button im not sure which one that is.. lol but i sometimes use the control stick to jump as well. shorthopping with the jump buttons instead of the control stick is more suited for me. for some people its different, everyone has a different feel for the game

i use the stick for some chars and the buttom for others but after several years using the same controller , short hoping with the stick make it to not stand straight. moves like strong missile or long range boomerang need u to "smash" the stick , those "push n release" moves with the stick are not good for it. u will break ur controller at the end.

I use the control stick for quick escapes and the x for jumping.
