I'm just curious how much potential this could possibly have in Sm4sh. Team games are always intense to watch in eSports, such as MOBAs. Discuss?

I don't think the game supports more than 4 players. 3v3 and 4v4 wouldn't be possible.

Wii U version has up to 8 players, where have you been?

anyway 4v4 could be a quick version of a crew battle, 3v3 is stranded in the middle lol

4v4 sounds a good idea actually. So e-sporty.

It sounds like an awesome idea. I'd love to see this. It could also bring some interesting play-styles into chaotic matches like those.

When you consider team dynamics and how incredible they would be, it sounds amazing. With four players, teams would really have to work together to develop themselves instead of just grabbing another good player and playing with only the two for the day. We could actually get some legit concrete teams, like Team VGBC or something.

But I don't feel like this will become the reality. The stages that support eight players probably won't be competitively viable. If you look at Big Battlefield, it's still too small to be able to tell what's going on from an outside perspective. Imagine the commentators (Scar will be going crazy). If you look at Temple, the lower structure is just not competitively friendly at all. I don't know all the stages for WiiU version, but usually bigger stages have more dynamics and hazards, so I don't know about competitive uses.

If anything, I feel like 3v3 has the most potential to be a thing. But since this is Smash, people will probably end up doing 3v3, 4v4, 2v2v2, and 2v2v2v2 anyway. And I am totally okay with that.

I'm a big teams-guy and I've always wanted more players(I was hoping for 6-player, got two more players on top of that), and I'm loving this.
I'll most likely include 4v4 or 3v3 in most of the tournaments I'll host.

Even if you're not big on the idea, just imagine this:
At some time, somewhere, somebody is going to clutch out a 4v1, and it'll be the best thing you've ever seen.

So custom stages then ;)

Oh wait those are banned ... WHAT A CONUNDRUM!
I was going to mention custom stages in my previous posts, but figured someone would make a serious remark.
They should be legal. Hell, custom stages should be the only stages. So much potential diversity.

We'd have to wait until we see the game and it's sharing capabilities. If it's easy to share then it shouldn't be a problem

The only real problem is WHO would make the legal stages - who can be justified enough in the community to make an impact like that, where they are able to get everyone on board - especially from the start. They'd have to be meticulously crafted stages too.

It becomes a problem when someone has to be put in control. But me, personally - I think we should try it out.

I agree. It shouldn't be left to the backroom, whenever that gets started. I think another group should be responsible.

I feel like if 4v4 becomes a thing it should have some different rules than regular singles and doubles.

For starters, I think it should be time instead of stock. This allows stages like say Hyrule Temple to be legal as circle camping would only become a problem if it ended up being a 1v1 or a 2v1 or whatever.

While this does mean that the game will go to time every single match, there won't be a lot of stalling and running away, as theres not really much room to do that at all in a 4v4 and it forces all 8 players to act aggressively. Takes away the idea of a stock taking with somebody big in the back who just holds stocks for everyone.

I'm just barley scratching the surface on my argument towards this but I thought it'd be worth to mention that we should at least look at Time Mode with no Stock as a possible option for this type of tournament.

Would have been cool if they put in some more objective based gameplay to fit in with what large teams could muster.

In Brawl, there was a hacked stage called "footbrawl" where you could just play soccer with goals and whatnot. A small added objective can do loads for how we see viability, utility and teamwork for a mode with so many variables.

Unfortunately, I think 8 player Smash was just an afterthought (an EPIC one) once they had stripped down the characters enough to run on 3DS barely, they were able to put twice as many on Wii U. Probably means ICs would be unable to function on Wii U at this point.

In any case, I wouldn't hold my breath for something deeper there.

I think the reason ICs were cut was because of 8-player Smash.

Do you think team attack would still be on if this is a thing?

After having played 4v4 and 2v2v2v2, it's not as chaotic as one might think. I think the biggest issue is the stage selection.

If we embrace this idea of 4 vs 4 now Sakurai might add custom specials in Smash 5 that works on allies much like that item that heals a ally that already existis in this game.

Just imagine Palutena healing a Sheik that has some berserk buff on it cast on the team by a Ness or a Ganondorf...

I like the reference but I don't think Sakurai would ever do that.
