Western NY, why are you hiding from the community?

Ok, so I just heard something that really puzzled me and got me frustrated.

My home is in Westchester County NY, which is really close to a Smash goldmine. There are tourneys everywhere within like an hour of there.

Unfortunately, Ithaca, where I go to college, is not like that. There are no tourneys in sight anywhere. I check the boards all the time for maybe some hope of even a small local tournament somewhere in all of Western NY. I haven't been to a tournament since August and I really miss them (am also getting really rusty >_>). I pretty much accepted that it is a Smash wasteland.

Or is it?

Apparently, the Western NY scene is still alive, but for some reason it's really undercover. There are in fact tournaments in various locations that really good players attend. Actually, I was just told that yesterday there was a Battle for Western NY. wtf? How can it be a battle for western NY if nobody knows about it?

But I guess to say that nobody knows about it would be an exaggeration. This guy who told me about the tournaments...I showed him some of the names from the bracket of BFWNY 4 and asked if they were familiar. He said that they were, and they are the people who go to these hidden tournaments.

So, I guess what I'm trying to get at with this rant is that it's ridiculous that all these Smashers have decided to withdraw from the rest of the community. It's like they've closed their doors to newcomers, such as me (to the western NY scene at least), by keeping the information among themselves. Why has this happened?

I go to school at Binghamton, and there's barely any tournaments either. We had a few but they were smaller than 12-14 people. =/

You see that's the problem. There ARE tournaments, but nobody knows about them. That kills the community and prevents so many people from getting involved.

They aren't like scrubby tournaments either. All the big local names from Western NY go to those tournaments apparently.

We're here, I know many people who want to play in tournaments, there just aren't... any... scheduled here.

Ever. More like, why is the community hiding from us?

Hi, I'm from Western New York, and I'd like to say we are not hiding from the community. We have a lot of good talent, and there is a lot starting to grow. Battle for Western New York was pretty big, G-Reg and Plank even came up, and there was a thread about it on Smashboards. Anyways, although I live near the gaming center where all the WNY players play, I'm not really the one who is involved with our community on a national level, so I'll talk to someone that is better suited to discuss this issue and have them talk to you and figure things out. By all means though, you're welcome to come and play anytime. We just had 2 tournaments, a biweekly and a smaller tourney at University of Rochester, and there is another Biweekly scheduled for the 15th? It got postponed though, I think. Normally they are held @ Arena 51, so yeah it would be awesome to have more people come and play. I'm positive that everyone here in WNY would love to have more people and newcomers attend the biweeklies. Like I said though, I'm not the one to talk to about our community on a national level, so I'll get someone better suited to explain.

No lol, not a BFWNY, the last BFWNY was in June. There was a tourney at University of Rochester on Sunday, and the last biweekly was on December 1st. There is another one soon, I'd estimate probably by the end of December maybe?

Sure, definitely. Let me know when you are coming:)

yo nintendude why dont u just make tournys?
Because my workload is so heavy I have legitimate time to pick up a controller maybe three times a month? Of course if a tournament came along I'd kinda slack off a bit lol

Well apparently there are a few tournaments that people like me had no idea about. The more tournaments there are and the more active the scene is the more the scene grows.

Well, that most recent BFWNY where G-reg came was pretty well-publicized if I remember correctly. I wasn't at college at the time though so I wasn't close enough to go. But, what happened since then? I haven't seen a single WNY tourney advertised here. You say that I'm welcome to come and play anytime but I don't really know what that means since there's no thread for it here. Even if you aren't involved in the organization of a tournament, you are free to promote it here on Smashboards. I did that long ago for tournaments in Elmsford, NY and turned them from local events that nobody knew about into decent tournaments that even players like PC Chris and Forward went to. All it took was simply having a thread on Smashboards.

The issue isn't really getting the tournaments more involved on a national level. It's getting them known in their own region.

that was a while ago though, which that was huge, nintendude said that someone told him there was a BFWNY just a few days ago
I don't know what he was talking about I guess. He was like btw there's a BWFNY in a couple weeks, so I was like wtf?, and he was like yea there is. I think his smash gamertag is Asylum.

There has not been many tournaments since the last bfwny. I don't know why the biweekly tournies (which also have just been started up again... Dec 1st) aren't put up on smashboards. Someone should probably make a thread about the next one. It is silly not to.

But you can also just go here for info...

Asylum should know better than that, he was at the biweekly at A51. Thing is, most Western NY smash news gets discussed on the Arena 51 forums, which anyone is welcome to join and post at. I do'nt really like that policy, because it makes it hard for people not from the area to find out about tournaments, but next time there's a BFWNY it'll definitely be publicized on Smashboards.

:yoshi: Everybody in this travesty of a thread is terrible and has absolutely no idea of what they're talking about.

ESPECIALLY Mr. DA_RAIN.

Thanks.
Yeah, someone who goes to these tournaments really should put up a thread.

Quit complaining, host a tourney in Ithaca and promote. Those three steps are likely the best course of action and you'll see some good players from Western NY. I place emphasis on the first step though.

3. Name any MM Matchups between the values of $5 - $20.
4. Come to any tourney in Rochester and we'll play.

I'm interested in doing some DK vs your Fox or Pikachu vs your Marth. Holla! This proposal is for you too Nintendodude. I really do hope you do main ICs. Nana is too fun!
