Did you know that today is Sakurai’s birthday? And did you remember that this is, also, two weeks to the day of the infamous “This World” Dojo update? So on the heels of a brand new character revelation, wasn’t it a given that today’s update was going to be something big?

It was–today’s update reveals the new twist to the single player mode that some had predicted after Sakurai introduced This World to us. The new, totally revamped Adventure Mode is, in Sakurai’s words, “a robust side-scrolling action game”. And I’m not about to argue with him.

The update features a number of screenshots, revealing some very interesting tidbits about the mode–Bullet Bills, Hammer Brothers, those weird robot-like creatures we first saw two weeks ago all make appearances. Peach, too, is seen in a cutscene for the first time, among other things. There’s also a 42 second video clip that, unfortunately, I haven’t gotten to load more than a couple seconds of–I’ll be sure to summarize it once I do.
One thing Sakurai promises is a bit of personal flair in each character’s storyline, dealing with stories and troubles from their past. Mix in what appear to be characters exclusive to the Smash universe, and you have the makings of a very interesting and very unique single player game, as only Smash Brothers could bring you.
There’s a lot more to be said about what’s in the pictures, movie clips we can analyze, and even what Sakurai comes and says outright. Your best bet is to keep checking the blog today–we’ll definitely have a few more posts about this update, I promise you that. You can also keep up with the Subspace Emissary forum thread on our forums to pick up on everyone else’s thoughts as well–some eagle-eyed posters have already noticed what appears to be a nod at the storyline of Kid Icarus.
Subspace Emissary: Sakurai’s birthday gift to you. Are you satisfied?
Update: it looks like the video basically just shows Mario and Kirby shaking hands, followed by the Halberd invasion we saw a couple weeks ago. Purplish blobs fall from the ship and spawn those robot-like creatures, and then we see Zelda and Peach rush up to help Mario and Kirby in what appears to be a stand-off. You can watch the video on YouTube.
