Weird Controller Schemes

Does anyone play using an abnormal controller setup?

For me, I've always, always played by jumping with the X button, and I only noticed that it was out of the ordinary a few months ago. I guess it's more effective to use the Y button, but it's nearly impossible to break this 6 year habit.

Some people hold the controller in weird ways in general aside from using different buttons.

I think it actually affects gameplay, too. I've never been a player that uses projectiles frequently, and I'm thinking now that the awkward placement of my thumb prevented me from always switching over to the B-button. Maybe that's a stretch, but I liked projectiles on 64, but in Melee and Brawl (both when using the GC controller) I always picked non-projectile characters. Even when I had characters with a projectile (my Melee main was Luigi), its rarely used.

Jumping with X isn't weird. I use tap jump.

I thought you were going to post about weird people who'd mess up their controls to something really weird. Like someone I met: R attack, Z jump, Y grab, C special, taunt pad to something else I forgot, tap jump off.

My friend uses r to jump, B to attack, A for specials, Y for shield, X for grab, and c-stick for specials

Well, I don't think I use an "odd" control scheme >_>...
I do however play with the wii mote and nunchuck until I get another gamecube controller ;[.
I've always used X to jump btw.

Yea, I didn't know how to phrase the title, it's pretty confusing.

But, from what I've experienced, the vast majority of people use Y instead of X. Although it's good to see people reppin' X =)

I tap jump.
Not many people like it like that so I guess it's "weird".

When you have tap jump on, it's kinda hard to use your U-tilt when you need it...

I used X to jump since melee, so it's pretty ingrianed in my system to jump with X.
Jumping any other way is just awkward for me.
I noticed that I never, ever use Y button for anything.
I already changed my controls to make Boost Smasing easier ( Z set to attack, so I can just control stick toward > cstick down > control stick up + Z for boost smash) so I just changed Y button to Grab since I wasn't using Y anymore.
There'll probably be some techniques that are way easier with wierd control schemes, but I try and stay as normal as possible, but I still like trying new things.

Doesn't Boost Smashing still work the same way with Z set to grab?

Forgive my ignorance, but do tournaments usually allow you to adjust your control scheme before competing? If not, wouldn't be best to just get used to the default settings?
They allow you to. It gets a little inconvenient if you have to do it before every match, so it's a good idea to set your name up on most of the wii's before it starts if you can during friendlies.

i have two schemes, and use each to respective players:
both have x: grab, cos i dont ue x jump and z is bad button although i am still used to using z grabs (so i kept z grabs too)
one is b-sticking
other is normal c-stick.
both are no tilt-jump.
oh. and i have on emore i made for this kid who i kno and hate. its called "redy" in respect to his nickname. and its r:jump l:jump tauntpad:jump u get my drift. its lol when people use that config.

I used to have a wierd controller setting just to see if I play better.
A: Jump
Y: Attack
X: Special
B: Special
L: Grab
R: Shield
Z: Grab

Didn't work so well since I was already too used to the default settings.

My control scheme isn't "weird", I use X to jump, L to grab, and R to shield. Helps me with shield grabs because I never used L to shield when I had it in default settings. And yes, tap jumping does hinder your ability to reliably use a Utilt.

I main MK and Im thinking of changing my control scheme into this:
tap jump back to ON for Uair string combos and finishers
L to specials for easier IDC
I use X to jump so I was thinking of making Y shield so I can easily airdodge after getting hit to reduce hitstun

any tips?

You can keep tap jump off, since for the Uair, you could always press jump at the same time your doing it, so it functions as though tap jump is on.
