Name: Viewtiful Joe
Developer: Capcom
Publisher: Capcom
Platform: GCN
Release: Japan: June 18 I believe, America: September 2003
To put things lightly, this game ROCKED E3. I wasn't there, but I played enough of Viewtiful Joe to tell you this is one AWESOME game.
If some of you were lucky enough to snatch up a copy of Nintendo's demo disc before retailers realized it WASN'T FOR RESALE (as it reads in big red letters on the back), you have probably played and loved Viewtiful Joe. I am obsessed.
In Viewtiful Joe, you play as Joe, an ordinary guy who loves movies. One day, his girlfriend Silvia is sucked into a movie, and it is up to Joe to go in and save her. Of course, how can he battle hoardes of robotic movie enemies without super powers?
A quick battle against Captain Blue, an old retired superhero, allows you to unlock you "true heroness inside," thus you have Viewtiful Joe, an awesome red superhero who can slow down time, speed it up, or zoom in on his awesome moves--more to come.
The graphics of Joe are amazing, it is cel-shaded and a good cel-job at that. Character animations are oftentimes funny, and the game's purposely cheesy storyline/cut scenes are VERY Japanese, so if you like animeish type games, this one is perfect for you.
Joe plays like a classic arcade game in 3D. As I mentioned before, he is in a movie. He goes through various movie sets like Aztec-like ruins, haunted houses, cities, etc. If Joe has enough Viewtiful points, he can use his Viewtiful powers. He can slow down time with L to leave his enemies moving VERY sluggish like so he can pull off insane combos like juggling them in the air only to finish them off with a SUPER punch. Slowing down time also affects your environment (i.e.: When you fight an Apache helicopter, the propeller starts turning slow, crashing the copter to the ground, along with a slot machine which you can slow down to win some crazy cool prizes easily).
Joe can also speed up time, basically he doesn't use this much in the demo except to kill large amounts of easy enemies very...easily. He can even catch on fire for being so frikin hot and catch the enemies on fire. When questioned on this little trick, the developer (who made Devil May Cry and Steel Batallion) said,"It just looked cool so we put it in." Now you KNOW this game has attitude. Zoom in isn't featured in the demo, but I've read that when you are zoomed in, Joe shows off some mad cool skills that render the enemies motionless because they are in awe of our hero's moves.
To sum it all up: This game is addictive, fast-paced, and has lots of attitude. The demo disc is worth the $10 price tag just for Viewtiful Joe. Get the game in September....
