WHERE DID YOU GET THAT?!?!?!?!

BTW, I beat the demo again yesterday because I was excited for Joe and I got all three Viewtifuls on the boss helicopter. It was so Viewtiful.

And I saw that Target will be getting the game on Thursday for $40...

$39.99, beats your Target price by 1 whole penny. I actually might go reserve it tomorrow though because I like reserving because of... No Tax =D Huzzah.

The viewtiful gameplay (I've played the demos and seen the videos) and the $40 price tag have got me hooked. I'll be picking the game up as soon as it comes out.

Old school 2d'in + awesome gameplay = must buy!

I called Gamestop last night, and, reminiscent of Super Mario Sunshine, they will be getting it a day later than all you west coasters. So it comes out Wednesday for $45 freaking dollars.

I'm going to Target to support my Arrow!!!

:)

Yeah, I'm going to get it at Target too since it's probably cheapest there... not to mention I get my discount :p I really wish I could get my hands on one of those bobbleheads though. Maybe I can find one cheap on ebay or something.

By the way, anyone know why the game is so cheap? Is Capcom worried it might not sell well enough with a normal $50 pricetag? I personally think it's going to sell great... it's gotten spectacular reviews from multiple sources, the advertisements for it are actually pretty cool, a rarity for Nintendo these days (*thinks back to the FFTA commercial and shudders*)... I think this game is going to be a hit. I just don't see why Capcom would lower the price and end up cheating themselves out of some major money. Henshin a go-go, baby! It's almost here!

Unlike games that we know will do well like Wind Waker and Soul Calibur 2, Nintendo's third big game of the year remains a question mark to me. I know I will get the game; it's just I don't know whether the mass public will grab this like in Japan or stay away from this game.

By the way on the demo, what's the highest you've gotten? My personal best is 10,384.

Here is an awesome interview with Atsushi Inaba of the Viewtiful Joe team. He discusses things like why he chose GCN to host Joe, what "viewtiful" truly means, sequels to Joe, etc.
------

IGNcube: What inspired you to create Viewtiful Joe?

Atsushi Inaba: When the idea started, I wanted a mixture of Japanese animation and American comic books. That was the basis, but we wanted to make a cool action game; something people haven't played before. That's how we started.

Why was GameCube your platform of choice?

Inaba-san: Actually, the GameCube was able to create the look we were really going after. It had just the right amount of flexibility to do everything we wanted to do with effects, all the particles on the screen, etc. Also we figured for Japan, as well as America, that GameCube had the kind of hardcore action gamers that would want to play the game, so it fit the target.

Why did you choose to make it 2D-style action instead of full 3D, when so many shy away from that these days?

Inaba-san: Well, when the project began we said we wanted to do a superhero game. Where do you see superheroes? Comic books. They're not 3D. They're 2D. They're pieces of paper. So with the 2D art, it was really the style we were going after. When you think about how people view 2D out there, especially on consoles, Viewtiful Joe is fresh and original.

So do you think there's a future for 2D games?

Inaba-san: I don't think 2D games will ever disappear 100%. But it's been around for a long time, and if you want people to play your game, you're going to have to do something original and new. A hook, something that makes it different, to make them say, "Man! I want that game." Because if it's the same as everything we've had up until now, they won't buy it.

Because it is so focused and stylized in the way of Japanese animation, do you think it has a good future in the United States?

Inaba-san: That's actually a really easy question! When we began making this game, we didn't think it was something that Americans would dislike. We made it in a way we hope it could sell anywhere. And we figured it was something the Americans can embrace. What it comes down to is if it's something they like, they'll buy it, and if they don't, they won't buy it and we can't make a second one. It's quite simple math! [laughs]

Are you making a second Viewtiful Joe?

Inaba-san: Of course, we are thinking it's the kind of game that's very good to do a sequel for. However, personally, I am very busy; even if I did want to make it I'm not sure I'd be able to right now. But I'll say this, that if it's the kind of game that sells no company would ever refuse to make a sequel to that game.

As a possible way to bolster sales, are you thinking of releasing it on other platforms?

Inaba-san: That hasn't been decided. Sales are key and we have to see how it does in America. If it's a stinker, we wouldn't release it for other platforms. We'll have to wait a while longer and find out what happens.

What does it mean to be Viewtiful? Is it just about the pink, or is there more?

Inaba-san: [laughs] Viewtiful symbolizes everything that Joe has. So, his moves are cool, he's cool -- he's viewtiful. I mean that not in a feminine way but a masculine way. Even with the pink as his color, it's viewtiful, and he can stand out and get the job done.

Do you think this pink will start a fashion trend?

Inaba-san: If it was really so popular that people were going to start a fashion trend based on my game, that would be great! But, honestly, I don't think American men or Japanese men are interested in dressing in more pink!

What other projects are you working on?

Inaba-san: Actually, I am working on other projects. I'm doing Gyakuten Saiban 3 for the Game Boy Advance. It's a courtroom game and it's been released in Japan before. It's actually doing really well at the show, but unfortunately I don't know if we'll ever bring it to a foreign market. As for new projects, well ... I can only tell you there is one in the works and to look for the announcement. It's fantastic. It's going to be great. Trust me, the Steel Battalion guy, to bring you something original and great. [smiles]

What's the status of Dead Phoenix?

Inaba-san: [stalls] Project Dead Phoenix? Hmm.

[covers mouth and begins to mutter]

Actually, the project I was talking about is not Dead Phoenix, and when you asked me what happened with Dead Phoenix my mouth closed shut, and I couldn't speak anymore! [covers mouth and laughs]

Is your new project for GameCube?

Inaba-san: Actually right now we're only in the planning phase. It really is going to be fantastic. Right now, though, we don't have any plans for which platform it will end up on.

Okay, they tell us that was our last question. Thanks for your time. We're big fans of Viewtiful Joe; thanks for creating something so original.

Inaba-san: Thank you.
------

I think it is interesting to note that whether or not it is released as multiplatform depends on how it sells in America. Normally, I'd want every game possible to be exclusive to GCN ;), but this game is just so cool that everyone should get a chance to play it...

that is wrong... and I just finished playing viewtiful joe... the name fits it perfectly, the game is infact viewtiful, combos amazing

mach speed is th eonly ability I have so far, the game is fascinating, dialouge is funny, and the graphics... MY GOD!! F***ING GREAT! The cell shading is viewtiful! Viewtiful has become part of my vocabulary...

A MUST OWN NINTENDO TITLE

There is a sequel coming out, its called "Viewtiful World".

There are 2 trailers, the PNO 3 trailer which is there, and the Viewtiful World trailer in which you need to unlock... man I wanna see that trailer...

Viewtiful World is a music video, not a trailer for the sequel. Capcom hasn't even decided if they will make a sequel yet. Viewtiful World can be seen on Capcom's website, it is just all of the characters/bosses in a band singing a song.

And you can't just have mach speed. Slow is the first power you get.

I actually got Joe last night (Target got it early). The game is pretty awesome, I'm thinking of doing a review when I have more time. Zoom in is amazing, it makes everything you do look so much cooler (even when you are just standing there, Joe is flexing his muscles which are supposed to paralyze enemies).

I love the graphics and the cut-scenes are surprisingly humorous. My only complaint thus far is that I can't understand/hear what the bosses are saying. Maybe it is the background music or something...

My favorite part so far was probably on the way to Hulk Davidson, you get to hear him sig/rap a little bit ;) ...

I got the game yesterday, man, the demo doesn't even scratch the surface of the real thing! IT IS GREAT!!! The character voices so far are very good, but the dubbing itself is bad, as in comparison to what is being said and the movements of the characters mouths, but other than that, it rocks! The zoom in move is so cool, esspecially when combined with mach speed, you can unleash a barrage of punches and a continuos spinning kick that hits enemies on either side of you. What I really like is how when you use Joe's shocking pink move( creates bombs from thin air and and keeps it aloft by hitting it with his foot until you kick it) he starts to wistle the classic Mario Bros. theme, and if you do it while in the air, he wistles a different part of it( it's hard to describe). I HIGHLY recomend getting this game, it is a BLAST!!:D

Darn, i thought it was a hidden trailer for the upcoming game... I mean it does say coming soon.

I didn't account slow as the first power since it comes with the V-watch. I just accounted mach speed, and I'm still trying to get 30,000 viewtifuls to get mach speed 3.

Zoom in looks so nice... those 360 kicks... viewtiful...

360 kicks are so wicked cool.

What moves have you guys bought so far? I got:

Voomerang (a mistake, I thought you got to keep it :()
Viewtiful Forever ( I just bought I think)
the faster VFX charge up meter
Red Hot kick
Sliding

I am kinda disappointed because last night at 10:45 I started playing, wanting to go to bed around 11:00, 11:15. Anyways, I played through the **** hard sub level (lost two lives) and finally made it to the boss (at 11:30). I lost another life on him and by the time I beat him it was 12:00. Oh well, I didn't want to rush through the game, but I wish there were a little more save points.

And Joe really sings the classic Mario theme? That is so awesome. If they are going multiplatform with this, then they'll have to change a few things (the Mario tune, the GCNs that the shark spits up)...

Yep, it's true. Just buy the shocking pink when you have a chance and try it out( although I don't use it that much for offensive purposes.) I just beat Joe's evil clone yesterday, poor sucker didn't have a chance! It was cool though when he created the attacking clones of himself and sent the whole swarm after me, I went slow on them and dodged them in mid-air, it was like something out of the Matrix, it was soooo cooool! Then I bought the Ukemi and the Viewtiful forever, but I didn't have time to try them out though:( . I have the Voomerang, shocking pink, air Joe, sliding kick, Mach speed 2, Ukemi, Redhot kick and viewtiful forever. I may have something else, but I can't remember.

Uh... Does "Viewtiful Forever" make it so you don't lose your Viewtiful Joe-ness? I'm hoping to get the game tomorrow so I'm not reading your guy's posts but I saw "Viewtiful Forever" and that question spawned in my brain.

EGM has some cool pictures of the game inside, showing mockery of some movies. Great stuff.

^^^ is an idiot ^^^
I was in town today, when my Mom and I decided to go to Blockbuster. They were getting VJ in at 2. We did some stuff, came back at 2 (school was out today) and we got in line behind a little kid and his mom. They left, and we asked about Viewtiful Joe, and it turns out that little punk rented it RIGHT before us. And they had ONE copy. I wanted to kick his head off.

Sorry I'm a little short on details... I'm really freaking tired.

I also think I'm losing it (my mind).

Nope,.Viewtiful Forever allows joe to strike a pose when Zoomed, and up closed that damages the anemies while striking a Viewtiful Pose... ok, It looks cool in the process and humerous.

Darnit, I should'vr never picked adult mode, I'm fighting "Another Joe" (you know... the other Viewtiful Joe) Well, it's like fighting a more advanced captain blue. Anyone that beat him, can you like.. um help me out? His mach speed is fast!!

Don't forget about that R.O.B. the Robot (for the NES) cameo too. ;)

The WindWaker:

His Mach Speed is very fast isn't it? If you can, try to be as close to him as possible, if you stray too far, he'll do his own version of the "Mach Speed", which is a big pain indeed. If you are under Mach Speed attack, just watch for the images and as soon as they get near > Slow > Zoom In > 360 kick the images. Zoom out if you need to check for more images and if any are still coming quickly zoom back in before he finishes his 360 kick.

Another way to deal with his "Mach Speed" is to jump up and down as they fly towards you. If you get surrounded, just Mach Speed run to either side. But you are best off 360 kicking em.

Pay attention when he calls Six Machine as that means health!

If you ever see him fall into the electric pit, put on slow to do more damage(? Not too sure if it does more).

When you get the opportunity to beat him up, > Slow > Zoom > Red Hot 100 punch him. You should get in a good 5-6 hits before he does a 360 Kick. In which you either just dodge as you're zoomed in or slide kick the otherway or Zoom Jump Drill out of the way.

It is a difficult boss, that should get you thru after a lot of practice against him. I would also reccomend that you have VFX Super Charge bought and a lot of life hearts. If you are still having problems, buy a Take 2 to refill your hearts when it empties.

Phew, I hope that helped.

Thank you for that vital information, Smashman

I got Viewtiful Joe today and as Zero EXE said, the demo doesn't even touch this game's surface. The cutscenes in the game are quite humorous and full of attitude, they also look very nice for not using FMV graphics.

Now, about the game play itself, I'm playing on Kids mode until I get use to the game and can take the adult level. The first two chapters were a sinch except for Davidson, I died once on him. I loved going through the city and the sewers, I thought the city was done extremely well. The castle level was kinda spooky to me, but hey, I get scared of anything that involves dark levels/backgrounds but this level was done very well too, a little better than the city in my opinion.

For my place in the game; chapter 3 had been really easy but now at the boss, Bruce, I'm having some trouble. One time it seemed like the game was going really easy on me and I got him down to his red health bar in about one minute but then all the sudden Bruce goes into so to say... Overdrive and pummels me like the world is going to end in 30 seconds. Now, I'm noticing the battle gets more difficult after the first time he hits you down and then the room fills completely full of water, sometimes though the room goes back to normal when I'm kicking his arse, so can anyone tell me what exactly it is that I'm doing to do this? Not being able to beat Bruce is making me very angry : P

I like the music too, and I noticed the Mario theme song in the beginning, right before it went to Silvia and Joe in the movies. The character's voices seem to be well done, as in they fit the character.

The game is very original, it feels so weird yet good to play something like a 2-D side scroller. Great job Capcom.

Darn Stomp Brother... I didn't even get to read that before I beat another joe, but I did use the tactics listed. When another Joe used his advanced version of Mach Speed, I quickly unleashed my Voomerang, slow motion, and whap, deafeated 5 copies. I simply outran his 6th copy. When another Joe approached me, I dodged his attack, and he was left open. I jumped up red hot kick/ zoom, and lit him on fire. While he's on fire hes vilnarable, so I red hot kicked/ zoomed him, about 6 times until I knocked him in the electric pit. I also kept my eye on the Six Machine. I knew that the blast from the explosion does more damage when slowed, so I used that against Him, I walked away with an A for Awesome. It was tough, but the red hot kick/ zoom worked like a charm... and now Im stuck again in the 5th level...

I got Viewtiful Joe today... I'd have to give props to Capcom for making an AWESOME game! Full of spunk, attitude, personality, and kick-arse gameplay! Several times during playing I wanted to throw my controller, but not from anger, my friends, from excitement!

I, being an old-school gamer who has played beat-em-ups nearly all my life, just melted when I played this game. It'd be fun without the VFX stuff, but man... once you go mach speed, you can never go back. And surprisingly, it's not just button-mashing. There's a good deal of strategy, and the viewtiful points system is actually pretty deep.

One complaint I'd have is that I wish I could skip the cutscenes sometimes because I want to PLAY!

Capcom frieking rules. They stared the industry in the face and said, "you know what? Screw you and your licenses and super-awesome-mega-features. We're making a game that's FUN."

And it was only $40! Brings back memories of the PS1 days when new games came out at that price 'cept for the really big releases (like FF8, etc.).

If you don't own this game, what are you waiting for?

Must-buy! Must-play!

Life is viewtiful...

Man I'm renting this game right now.....wow. It kicks soo much booty. But hella hard bosses though. It took my like 10 tries to beat Gran Bruce.

CSHD: What worked for me is just to try to take him out as quick as you can. Go after him, don't wait for him as he heals once the water is raised. Rush up to him and do slow-mo, zoomed in punches/kicks. And most importantly avoid his chomping attack, run away with mach-speed and then jump over him. Good luck.

You know what? New rule. You guys are only allowed to say that VJ sucks until I get it. Then it's allowed to be awesome again. If only I had money. Actually, I'm going to count my cash and if I have enough, I am leaving right now.

I too was shafted at Blockbuster. They had a good ten copies of Madden 2004, but they only had one or two of VJ, and I did not get it! I am so sad.

EDIT: Okay, it's awesome again. Who'd a thunk that all those singles in my dresser drawer would add up to so much?

Looking at this topic seriously makes me very happy. It shows that there is hope for the gaming industry and that sometimes making a bold move can result in a game that everyone enjoys.

MY LIFE IS VIEWTIFUL!

I'm playing on Kids mode right now, and it gets hard. For another Joe, I kept jumping and running, guessing where he would come next. If you notice, every boss sorta has a pattern of moves that use can memorize and use against them. When the clone splits into...other clones, get right in the middle of them when they form in a circle, slow down time, zoom in, and do 360 kicks to rack up massive points. Also when he summons the Six Machine, destroy it right away and make sure to get the burger. If you don't get it right away, it will make your battle ****.

I just played through the level after another Joe, where it is half sewer and city with lots of copters and the tank! I discovered an awesome way to discover the tank! At first I thought you had to shoot it's missles back at it, but instead wait for all of the robots to come out and line up. Then let one start to punch, slow down, dodge the attack and then targets should appear all over the place. If you time the punch right (I recommend using slow), you can hit them all and rack up major points also hitting the tank at the end destroying it in like 1 or 2 hits, giving you awesome rating and V-points.

I'll save some more of my experiences for later ;) ....

I rented the game yesterday. God, I love it.

Im playing it on Adult, and now in at the third fight with the Jocker. Or maybe its latter. I don't remeber, its the the one in the Hotel. Anyways, the game is fun, and the fighting is surprisingly simple and addictive. My only problem is the puzzles. There way too easy.

Most of the times, that's true but today I stood in a room for 20 minutes thinking of what I could do and then I finally thought "Hmm... what would happen if I threw a bomb in that lava hole in the wall?" And that was all I needed to do. Sometimes the game just expects you to know what to do, its kind of frusterating.

Spoilers ahead.

Hmm... After beating Alastor the game is kind of weird, I'm having to fight all the bosses again but at a higher difficulty. Hulk Davidson is hard now =(

More Spoilers-
Ya I know what cha mean, episode 6, the amazing 5 I think... holy crap are the bosses hard (and made of stone). Hulk Davidson is finally a breeze for me, played him so many times I found out what he does.
Get nexr to him, he strikes low, dodge, SLOW>ZOOM, Punch and 360 Degree Kicks. After 3 barrages of that he strikes an undodgeable attack unless you slow down. What I do is that I slow it down>Zoom, and strike a pose for minimal Damage. Then I was up to Bruce (shark). Voomerangs Damage him the most, so I use it wisely. I just like it when he screams out smoochie boochies... hilarious. I ran out of Voomerangs... *Grunt*. But once you know Hulk Davidsons Pattern he becomes obvious and easy.

I don't know what level I'm on (it's the one after fighting Another Joe), but this game is fun, but hard! The puzzles are either extremely easy or really hard. I can remember I had trouble with those two energy poles (after, I realized that I could zoom in and smash the ground). The lava puzzles seem to be the hardest for me. I'm also having trouble actually beating some of the later mini-bosses. The ninjas and yellow robots have a new level of difficulty. I'm having to waste all my viewtifuls on Hamburgers instead of upgrades like Viewtiful Forever.

ARGH! Don't spend your viewtifuls on hamburgers! spend it on life or other moves!

I haven't figured out how to deal with ninja's yet, but waiting for them to finish their mini-combo then striking in slo-mo seem to work. But I do agree that the ninja's are the hardest enemies in the game.

As for the yellow ones, they are a cinch. Their weakness is their backs after performing an attack. Just go right next to them and wait until they do one of either two things:

1. They rear up a bit charging their fist. - In this point as soon as they rear up, jump over behind them and Red Hot 100 Punch them.

2. They pound their chest and scream. - At this instance, just crouch right next to them and wait, as they will do a screw-attack upwards. It's then just a matter of running behind them in their "?" status and Red Hot 100 Punch their back. If you are in a cramp space, you might need to slide underneath them when they screw-attack.

Aren't all the bosses easy once you get their patterns down? Except for that Fire Leo guy (yes, I've gotten that far after one day). He's crazy hard, I gave up on him. Now I have to play through all the bosses again. I've played him so many times, I'm getting rainbow Vs on Charles the 3rd, no prob. I rock.

I can remember I had trouble with those two energy poles (after, I realized that I could zoom in and smash the ground).
You know what's not funny? Me trying to figure that out for a good fifteen minutes before I got Zoom, giving up, going ahead, getting Zoom, seeing the explanation thing, and knowing instantly how to get it. That's not funny.

EDIT:Hey down there, when Chuck's in torpedo mode, just slow and you can hit him. Auto-dodging takes away from your defense rating (just a little).

Man, the level with the green stone bosses is killing me. I can beat it, but I just hate wasting lives. I'll offer my strategy for (arguably) the easiest boss, Charles the 3rd.

I can get perfect against him now. Basically, you want to have Ukemi and Viewtiful Forever, etc., they help out a lot. What I do is right away jump up in Slow and punch him to turn him into bats. Then just right in the middle of the crowd of bats and Zoom in, Slow, then 360 kicks. You should be able to eliminate most, if not all of the bats, doing some major damage.

Based on pattern, you can guess where the bats will come together to form ol' Charles, so do so and you will be right beside him, repeat the process. When he uses the move where rocks fall from the ceiling, jump in the air while in Slow to see them coming, dodge, and then wallop on Charles.

I also find it helpful to let him come right towards you in "torpedo" mode, then use Slow and Zoom in to dodge it, pulling off a wicked move that damages him a lot.

If that makes any sense ;) ...

Holy ****

I got annoyed on my real Joe file, since im dying to those electric things in the third world (those little circles that shoot pink electricity), so I started to play on a Kid file. Holy ****, how can you do that to this game? In twenty minuets tops, I beat Hulk Davidson, without dying once. Sure I knew all of the puzzles and how to beat the bosses, so what, times it by 3? One hour to beat both of them? Thats too simple.
