Uses for dair?

It seems like an awkward move. I saw it used in cloudburst's set against Forte to get up from offstage, but what are some other uses?

very good against spacies, you can cover side-b and up-b depending on positioning

something i tested was fastfaling the dair so that the last hit wouldnt hit the spacies up (basically you drag them down), so they have to initiate up-b, which gives you enough time to DJ aerial, wg, withdraw, waterfall (this is risky as they can SDI into the move to get themselves carried back to the stage), whatever.

against cc-heavy opponents, aka mario/peach/shiek, you can sj ff dair and shield their cc dsmash and then withdraw oos for an easy bait and punish

there's a bunch of other stuff its good for, like jab resetting when they're on a platform or even using the downwards disjoint to hit someone's sweetspot recovery, ledge cancel and then nair or something.

just experiment with it, it's got so many uses that im sure you'll find a new one

IMO it's not an outstanding move, but it's not bad either. You're right that it's kind of awkward, but it does have uses like Jamwa said.

Most important thing to keep in mind about Dair is that Squirtle's entire tail is a disjoint during the move and has no hurtbox. If you space properly, you can gimp a lot of recoveries that lack hitboxes above the character-Fox and Falco are good examples of where Dair is useful.

You can also sling jump off the stage and Dair using your body as an impassable wall. Although this won't work against horizontal disjoints, you can sometimes knock a recovering opponent out of reach before they can even get started this way.

How do you gimp with dair? The hitbox at the end sends them up. sj dair seems like an interesting mixup, however.

You drag them down with a fast fall and pop them into the stage for a stage spike if they aren't good with teching or don't expect it. Or you fastfall so the last hit doesn't connect.

You can also short hop it into a grab at early/mid percentages. You do have to input the aerial pretty early though, or the last hit will fail to connect, and you have to watch out for crouch canceling.

What others have said. Another use is using slingjump dair to cross opponents up. If you full hop you can fastfall and ac it. Since the tail has no hurtboxes, it will be out a lot of attempted anti airs. Once crossed up, a dtilt or an up tilt will do. Even on shield crossing them up is super good. If you do use it offstage (its best use imo) and get the combo hit, they will likely DI in trying to survive, which against a lot of characters will combo quite well. I don't know for sure, but an aqua jet would be stylish and effective for floatier characters, though thats not the best choice. Best option is probably strong nair since it sends them out and low, which is most effective against the characters that you will be able to combo this dair aganist.

Dair's amazing. The more I use it the more I think it's one of the stronger moves on Squirt's kit. Great disjoint, multi-hit, combo-extender, great crossup/approach, edgeguards well and stuffs almost every recovery in the game, can even be SH autocanceled if you're godlike.

Next friendly sesh you get, devote a couple games to spamming dair. You'll learn a lot about the move.
