All Samus mains know: U-Smash is not a neutral move, it is not required in our combo arsenal and it can be hard to hitconfirm characters but this also means that U-Smash will not be staled whenever you need it.

Something that's been overlooked, U-Smash is a great tool to actually edge guard on reaction.

OoS U-Smash punishes Ledge get-up / Ledge attack on reaction.
OoS Grab punishes Ledge Roll on reaction.
OoS Up B and OoS U-Smash (Samus facing the ledge) punishes Ledge Jump.

So if you have good reactions, you can punish 4 ledge options in that position.

Let's get deeper into reaction times:
Smash runs at 60 Frames per second, 1 Second = 1000ms so 1 Frame lasts 16,66ms.

Let's say if your average reaction time is 240ms, you would react after the 14th frame, but Smash has an internal Delay of 7 Frames. This means that in an offline Match you effectively react after the 21th frame.
Most character's ledge get-up animation loses it's invincibility at frame 34. Samus's OoS U-Smash comes out at frame 11, so when considering the reaction time (21 frames in that example) your hitbox actually comes out at Frame 32.
Every single Hitbox of U-Smash lasts 2 frames long.
That means that you succesfully punished ledge get-up and killed your opponent on reaction without having to guess his action.

Now, we can abuse the fact that our U-Smash most likely will be fresh whenever we need it for a kill.
So our internal discord team researched the exact kill % values with U-Smash on the regular tournament stages. This includes Battlefield, Smashville, Final Destination, Lylat Cruise, Duck Hunt, Dreamland and Town & City. (SV, FD, LC, DH & DL share the same vertical blast zone values.)

These values are tested against perfect DI & even Smash DI without Rage, so if your U-Smash fully connects then you can be absolutely sure that your opponent will die at these %s.

I would only recommend U-Smashing at the edge against characters with a clear "Yes" tag but be careful about characters that have better ledge options.
Rage values may follow, but testing these will be much more time consuming.

Rage Coler = 60%, 100%, 150%

Note: don't sit in shield on the ledge in Samus dittos, ledge release screw attack can shield break or poke.

I'm working on a vertical KO formula for any move, this is lots of data to work with (thanks!). In this test did all 18% of damage land? I know it says fully connects, I'm just making sure it works.

Once you've seen the complete video, it probably makes sense to look instead for a guaranteed kill out of a combo chain.
My guess is just looking at the numbers that it's likely Z-air (tip) -> Z-air (tip) => guaranteed Up-smash kill.
There may be some stage variation, of course, halberd will be different than battlefield, but once you have the numbers you can likely associate it within the broader combo structure.
Battlefield may be Z-air (tip) -> Z-air (tip) and Halberd may be Jab 1 cc D-tilt or Z-air TC.
Anyhow, my own lab work is done for quite a little bit....

U-smash can be useful if utilized properly. I've managed to connect hits lately against opponents without platforms. Thanks for the information.
