It might be best to start a new thread based on trans issues as a whole, and continue to discuss this specific OP issue here. That's just an idea, though.
Acting with a little decency is also an option. Since transgender issues aren't "there" or well-known as gay issues, it's understandable if someone calls a M to F a "he" or F to M a "she." The important thing in all that is to realize that you made a mistake, and for either person not to make a huge deal out of it. It's the same as if someone says '"that's gay" and that offends you to some degree as a homosexual. Both parties can be polite about it, and move on. But that's not really the issue here. We're talking about bigger things, and how to deal with discrimination as a whole against transseuxals and transgendered people.
For those who say we don't need to talk about this, I disagree. Learning how to treat people with respect isn't that hard to do, and we do it all the time with different cultures and transgendered people are in a sense, part of a community or culture
